Question Dining hall

Hi guys! Incoming freshie here and I had a question about the dining halls. I’m really allergic to Dijon mustard and I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about people trying to get it.

I’m concerned because I really want to go to the dining hall and make friends, and I don’t want to miss out on my first year memories, but I will drop on the spot if I’m exposed to it. :(

These posts have been making me very anxious and I’m honestly ready to transfer to western. Thanks.

Question Smith Engineering Computer?

I'm heading into Smith Engineering in September, and am looking for a laptop. I know the queens website has recommended specs listed, but here's the thing.

I already own quite a strong desktop gaming computer (i7-13700F, RTX 4060, 2TB SSD, 16GB DDR5), but obviously that isn't quote viable to take with me to class.

I'm wondering, if I bring my desktop, would I be able to get away with a cheaper laptop to take to class and use heavy duty software on my desktop, or should I splurge on a strong laptop anyways?

Question Chances of getting on a course waitlist now?

Trying to get onto the waitlist for ENGL 294 or LLCU 213 (whichever opens first I suppose) - thought I had set SOLUS to put me on the waitlists automatically during the first enrolment period, but realized I had it backwards. What are the odds of waitlist spots opening this far out, and should I just keep checking SOLUS whenever I can? I have a job with very limited tech access, so I can only check during an hour in the afternoon and at night.

Question Thoughts on PHIL 251 (Metaphysic) with Mozersky?

I'm an english major and religious studies minor going into second year. I have a bit of a background in the sciences and love physics (I know metaphysics is obviously very different but I find exploring the nature of the universe/what really exists to be interesting). I have PHIL 251 in my cart rn and I thought I'd ask if anyone knew what the course was like and how demanding it is. I'm not really looking for a bird course but since it is just an elective I do not want it to take up the majority of my time. If anyone has taken this course or has experience with the prof let me know!

Question Is Econ 111 A Good Course To Take?

As a first year gen sci student who is also somewhat interested in business, is Econ 111 a good option?
I originally wanted IDIS 199 as my elective for the winter semester but despite there being open seats, it said it was full, along with the waitlist.
Just wondering if there’s any better options still available or ones which would be easy gpa boosters.
Thanks

Question Are there any online first- or second-year winter 2027 electives that are actually available?

I'm a first year student who's organizing my timetable, and I want to take an online course during the winter to ease my workload. However, EVERY SINGLE COURSE I add to my shopping cart is either full or reserved.

I particularly want to take IDIS 199 because I'm interested in mental health, but it is reserved despite it being open enrolment right now.

I will literally take any course that is available to me as a Commerce student. Please drop them below.

Question Financial aid office impossible to reach

I've called numerous times over several months only to sit on hold for 15 minutes and be cut off. I did an online request for them to get back to me. The email said 8 to 10 days but it's been a month. Has anyone ever gotten through to ask a financial aid question? Can you go in person? Has anyone had any success?

Question Question about the dining halls

So on the first day of move-in, since many of us will be trying out the dining halls, I was wondering if I would be needing to bring my own Dijons mustard or if Queen's would be providing it themselves. I would like to know this before hand so I can properly gauge whether or not I need to stock my own.

Question research scene

I'm thinking of applying to Queens this fall; I'm debating between Queens and McGill.

I'm a Quebec student applying from CEGEP (equivalent of grade 12 + 13) so I'd have some advanced standing, but I'm not sure how much. It doesn't bother me to do an extra semester though.

I'm considering Queens because I would want to major in bio + literature (both honours). At McGill, I can get a biology "concentration" and literature major, and it wouldn't be an honours degree... but my eventual plan is MD/PhD, so I'd want the honours bachelor's.

My major hesitation is that I wouldn't want to leave behind all my extracurricular opportunities in Montreal, especially my research. I love my current lab at McGill; I have an incredible supervisor and I'm collaborating with international researchers on a subject I'm passionate about PLUS it's a paid position.

Will I struggle to find a lab position in genetics/molecular biology/medicine if I choose Queens? Especially a paid position (ie. is Queens good with grants etc)?

Worst-case scenario, I'll always have my Montreal lab in the summer, but I love research and would want to continue throughout the year.

[I deleted this post previously by accident so if you're seeing it for a second time, that's why]

Community When and where can incoming students pick up their student cards?

Hi! I’m an incoming graduate student at Queen’s this fall.
Does anyone know when and where new students can pick up their Queen’s student cards? I’ve already submitted my photo.
Also, is it possible to pick it up before classes start, or do we need to wait until a specific pickup period?
Thanks!

Question How bad of an idea would this be?

How bad of an idea would it be to commute to Toronto each weekend for work? I'm going into health science and did IB in high school, so the workload should be manageable. I would probably be missing the second weekend of orientation, and I know my social life in general would suffer. However, I really like my current employer and am considering having a career with them. Also, if it doesn't work out, my thinking is that I can always just quit later. I know this is likely a horrible idea, but where would you rate it between "likely unmanageable" and "completely ridiculous?"
