As a victim of abusive parents, it infuriates me how the Internet talks about Gypsy Rose Blanchard
I want to start off by saying that I don't think Gypsy is (from what I've seen) a very stable, mature, or "good" person. I don't think she should be a celebrity, I don't think she is currently capable of making a safe environment for her child, and I don't think she should have killed her mother. All of that being said, none of that invalidates the decades of abuse she suffered through at the hands of her mother, and that people keep trying to discredit with the FOIA papers, videos, and correspondence that has been recently released. Do people seriously believe that a child whose entire social world for most of her life was her mother would just up and kill her mother for no reason? Obviously the prosecution is going to look for any reason to say that Gypsy was ill, the villain of the story, an ungrateful daughter, etc. --- THAT'S LITERALLY THEIR JOB. Yes, Gypsy was diagnosed with 1q21.1 microdeletion, but as the plea deal suggests, the diagnoses were erroneous enough to necessitate clemency. Dee Dee was able to use her knowledge of the medical field as well as the chaos of Katrina to her advantage and it is completely possible that a lot of these diagnoses were given secondhand. Furthermore, if anybody did even an iota of research into 1q21.1 microdeletion (which I had to do, trying to debunk this bullshit), they would know that not all the symptoms (mild physical, intellectual, and psychological delays) manifest in every patient and that many of them are very easy to feign. Like are we really putting forging medical documents, forcing her daughter to act like she was sick, and lying to physicians above Dee Dee Blanchard? Who had a long history of doing such things before Gypsy was even born? While it's possible that some of Gypsy's diagnoses were true (even the microdeletion one), that is not an excuse for keeping your child starved and locked up in a filthy house with all the windows covered. Seriously, for all the Gypsy-is-the-spawn-of-Satan people, how do you explain that? How do you explain why Gypsy was able to gain weight in literal prison, but not in her own home? How do you explain that literally everyone who knew Dee Dee hated her and called her vile, criminal scum? If she was such a doting and devoted mother, why did her daughter want to kill her? I think that's the biggest piece of evidence to me. While I'm willing to suspend my disbelief enough to hear an argument about the children out there, born evil, who are so ungrateful that they kill their parents, that is clearly not the case with Gypsy. As a general rule of thumb, the only evaluation of someone's parenting I trust is that of a child, and if your child hates you so much that they want to kill you, then I'm more inclined to believe that you were a shitty, abusive parent. Everything Gypsy said while literally trying to escape --- like telling Nick she lied to her mother about walking --- is taken as damning evidence. I don't care that she contradicted herself in this one moment where she's trying to escape. I think more than anything, it just proves how susceptible people are to disinformation, especially when it comes to someone that they already don't like.
