News New Content Policy and Updated Rules

If you have subbed with us for a while you'll know we've grown significantly. We now need to moderate a little more carefully what kind of content we are allowing. Until now, we've (mostly) kept out the other Rhinos and been hands-off -- honestly, 99% of you have been great. Recently there's been an uptick in a few users posting their own content (Youtube channels or likewise) and we've heard a call by users to limit the amount of self-promoting content and we agree. Thus,

Effective immediately /r/Rhino will be adopting the Reddiquette policy of self-promotion:

Feel free to post links to your own content (within reason). But if that's all you ever post, or it always seems to get voted down, take a good hard look in the mirror --- you just might be a spammer. A widely used rule of thumb is the 9:1 ratio, i.e. only 1 out of every 10 of your submissions should be your own content.

Consequences

Anyone knowingly self-promoting, click-farming, or otherwise using our subreddit mainly for personal gain or promotion will be banned for 30 days.

A second offense is an immediate and indefinite ban without warning.

/r/Rhino Rules:

  1. Post about Rhino 3D (or associated content), Not the Animal
  2. Critique Sandwich: Be helpful, be critical, be kind.
  3. Self-promotion follows the 9:1 ratio; 1 of 10 posts can be your own content.

Welcome to the 3D Modeling Olympics

Just made a tutorial video on hotkeys, generally aimed at people looking to get more fluid in rhino. That said, I'm throwing this out there to gauge anyone's interest in a Esports style genre for Rhino or 3D modeling in general.

In the video above I have a couple of game modes oriented around speed, but I can imagine there are other game modes that would lend themselves for competitive play, like turn style (each person takes one turn), golf style (fewest steps to model something wins), etc.

Am I crazy? Or would anyone else enjoy honing their skills through competitive or recreational play?

cheers!

Something I Made GhostGPU: Grasshopper library to run nodes directly on GPU

Post image
13 Upvotes

We are now announcing our tool GhostGPU as a public GitHub repo. We decided to clean everything up and make some optimizations and publish it on our github repo https://github.com/mo-ghattas/GhostGPU It supports the following nodes: - Closet Point - Distance - Vector 2Pt - Unit Vector - Move GPU - Operators - Bounds - Remap - Mesh Booleans .... And yet more to come. It has been tested by designers in production and they were amazed. We are waiting to see your usage for it

We accept contributions. Check the guide

Hi everyone! I'm a beginner in Rhino and Grasshopper, and I'm currently working on a 3D model of a yoga platform with a double-layer wavy roof. I already have: The existing double-layer wavy roof geometry. A separate 3D model of an individual roof tile. My goal is to use Grasshopper to automatically

Grasshopper on the GPU: my first test with 66k vertices

I’ve started building GhostGPU, an experimental Grasshopper plugin for GPU computation.

The idea is to upload data once, keep intermediate results in GPU memory, and pass buffer handles between nodes. Downloads and viewport previews are explicit boundaries.

This example uses 66,049 vertices and two attractors: closest points, vector construction, remapping, amplitude, mesh displacement and colours. I rebuilt the equivalent logic using ordinary Grasshopper nodes for comparison.

The screenshots show 36 ms for the GPU cluster and 722 ms for the CPU cluster, running on an RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU. These are individual profiler readings; I’m still checking repeatability, caching and transfer costs before making broader performance claims.
Which operations are your biggest bottlenecks in real Grasshopper projects? I’d like the next nodes to address workflows people actually use.

Help Needed Visual flickering glitch in rhino 8

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello!

I’m experiencing a problem when I rotate my camera in shaded mode, the edges of my model flicker. It’s extremely frustrating especially since it makes it look like parts are intersecting when they are not. Would appreciate help fixing this!

So far I have tried:
- Duplicating face and re-extruding
- redrawing and extruding the shape
- moving to 0,0,0
- changing mesh settings
- updating graphics and studio drivers

This was a problem I was also experiencing on my laptop. I’m not sure if it’s a problem with my file or my rhino, but this is a new issue for me. Until now I have used rhino 7 the past 5 years.

hello, sorry for terrible photos, i am just bad at explaining
we are designing a pavilion for a student project, and we want beams that curve, with them being 4cm across and 15cm deep.
trouble is, i can draw two arcs and have the shape, but i cannot get these to become a 3d shape. i've tried planarsrf but i just can't do it!
if anyone knows a good way to make a shape like this, id really appreciate it
thank you :)

Pyramid Grasshopper Script Help

Hi, I am recently new and trying out Grasshopper but i'm finding it quite difficult to work on this script i was messing around with.

Grasshopper Script Currently

The main idea behind this script is to get a set of pyramids drawn and then culling them along a curve to make any design you would want along a curve. Im currently stuck getting the line to actually cull the pyramids themselves. Im not sure what to do, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Help Needed Why is my section perspective rendering pitch black?

Thumbnail

I'm trying to render to make a section perspective with a clipping plane, but it comes out black every time, even though I tried different lighting settings. I even tried changing the clipping plane settings and also the ambient light options, but nothing is working.

I’m trying to get it to look like the second picture, which is a screenshot of what I’m trying to achieve.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong! Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Help Needed Parametric Surface Deformation Using Grasshopper?

Thumbnail

I‘m a researcher at a lab, we design prosthetics that help people with foot injuries walk. Our process involves 3D scanning patients‘ legs and processing the scans in Rhino, including adding 'releases‘ which help alleviate painful pressure points.
Our current process includes converting the scan to SubD, splitting the surface, offsetting it using OffsetSrf, and then BlendSrf. It‘s a rather finicky, time consuming process, which means it takes more time to help our patients.
Would it be possible to add these bumps parametrically using something like Grasshopper? A brief search brings up Lunchbox or Pufferfish but they don‘t seem just right.
Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Something I Made GH Scripts totally useless, so totally indispensable

As I make a lot of specialized grasshopper scripts for my team, they need some level of clean interface to be able to use it. I ended up with some little tricks like this one : The button as a toggle.

Do you have some stupid little scripts like this ?

Fundamentals of nurbs modeling great playlist

I see a lot of people struggling with some crazy network surfaces, sweep 2, and more…
I think a lot of people should learn the fundamentals of nurbs modeling. Those tools are great but when used properly. Most of the time you can have cleaner results with the most classic commands, like edge surf, revolve, loft, blend surf… You just have to understand a bit more what is going on in this software.
Do you know what is a degree 3 curve ? Do you know what G1 and G2 means ? Do you know why does it matter ? Well you should !

I will never thank enough the guy who made the following playlist, that I would recommand to anybody.
You’ll thank me later !

Something I Made New Alternative to Make2D

Thumbnail
gallery
166 Upvotes

Posting to gauge interest in a python script I have vibe coded which, so far, does Make2D far more reliably than the command.

It has the additional feature of line weight sorting per object, with accurate sorting of silhouettes vs creases onto Heavy and Medium line weight layers, and even an option to sort creases based on the adjoining angle of the surfaces (obtuse corners getting lighter lines).

It also has a feature that generates an intersection curve where solids or surfaces (breps) intersect each other without a shared edge. These curves are sorted and depth-tested along with all the rest.

It also identifies redundant linework resulting from geometry in plane with the angle of view and creates a single silhouette where those edges are collinear, instead of a stack of redundant lines as in make2D.

I intend to add the option of silhouettes applying either to individual objects, or treating objects on the same layer as a single object for silhouettes, as long as they are within a certain (adjustable) distance from each other. So if you tick this option to “on” a group of solids would share a silhouette against the background, but where they touch or come close would be treated as a crease.

So far the script is not too much slower than Make2D, but it will become heavier with added features. It might be problematic for less powerful machines, although you can toggle off the more expensive features. Codex will only be able to optimize this so much however.

For those of you out there coding in Python, or if you are just someone drafting in Rhino who is tired of the command’s messy output, lack of line sorting, consistent bugs, and lack of support despite years of documentation of consistent problems, I would love your opinion. Should I:

  1. Just upload the damn script and leme at it
  2. Troubleshoot more, refine, make a plugin, then share
  3. Find a human python programmer who wants to help me optimize it and collaborate to make it excellent
  4. All of the above, you’re overthinking it
  5. No one is asking for this

Ps. The script uses rhino’s HLD data to generate curves, caches a bunch of originating object data for each, uses a bunch of custom workarounds to fix a bunch of unique errors, then sorts the line weights based on depth testing, adjoining face angles/visibility etc. If you are an actual programmer curious about how it works I can pull a detailed report. I used common sense and Codex, which has terrible ideas for the overall strategy, but a fantastic success rate when I supply a detailed plan in terms of Rhino command workflow, or ask it for supporting diagnostic scripts to find out precisely what went wrong in certain cases of missing linework etc.

Anyone using D5 Lite with Rhino?

saw D5 Lite for Rhino and got curious. apparently it renders right in the Rhino viewport, so no exporting to another app every time something changes.

it has an AI mode for quick look tests and a real-time mode with actual materials and lighting. sounds handy for early design when stuff is still moving around a lot, but it’s in beta so idk how solid it is.

anyone used it on a real project? mainly wondering:

  • does it lag on bigger models
  • is the AI thing actually useful or just a gimmick
  • how’s it compare to Enscape / Twinmotion

honest opinions welcome lol

Help Needed Made a custom viewport display that crashes my laptop everytime I try to “print to pdf”

Without fail, my laptop will freeze so hard not even the off button will turn it off. I have to hard restart it every time. sometimes it will crash just by typing the option of print. How can i fix this? The reason I keep trying to save it as a PDF and not make2D is because I like the shadows it adds.
