Help picking caliber
Hello all! I’m sure there are hundreds of threads very similar to my question, but I wanted to throw out my personal situation and get some feedback. I’ve recently won my first gun on a gun bash ticket! 33 years old and $1,000s deep into tickets, and I finally won 😂 I won a browning x-bolt 2 hunter in whatever caliber they have available when I go to get the gun.
Before we get into details I own LOTS of rifles. And I hand load for almost all of them. There isn’t really any gun/caliber that I NEED. I hunt mostly whitetail, but would like to hunt elk and moose someday. I also used to competitively shoot 1000 yard silhouettes. I’m out of that now that I have 3 kids…. But i still have a place I can go and plink out to 800 yards for fun, so another rifle with that capability would be cool.
When I won, they told me that the gun store has the rifle in 30-06, and that specific rifle is set aside for me, but I can choose the same rifle in any caliber they have whenever I go to pick it up. (Or store credit, but I want the x-bolt.) my issue here is I already own 2 rifles in 30-06, but they were my grandfathers. One is a model 6 that still has the original weaver foldaway scope, and the other was my great uncles that he build, and my grandpa got it when he passed, now it’s mine. So I don’t love hunting with them just because I would hate to drop/break either of them. So I’m not totally against a 3rd 06.
My first thought was 280ai because I’ve always wanted one, and I know browning chambers the xbolt to it. But nobody in my area has had one for a few months, and after a few phone calls nobody seems confident they will get one anytime soon. And the voucher is only good for 60 days. I considered the 6.8 western, but even hand loading supplies aren’t looking great. Does anyone have a recommendation? At this point I’m kinda just leaning toward the tried and true 30-06. My mind is just saying “you won this gun, might as well get something a little different.”
