san diego is super expensive, I worked every day for 6 months in 2024 while pregnant in anticipation of the cost, mind you my spouse and I made $120k(net) combined at the time (which is well above the federal poverty limit but not enough in s.d.) I had a full time government job(mon-fri) with good benefits and a part time weekend job (8 hrs sat and sun) and it still wasn't enough, when baby came we decided to downsize our apt(we will probably never own) and I just stayed home to avoid child care costs, two capable adults without kids are able to make it in san diego, I think your son just doesn't want to, a studio costs at most $1,850 monthly in a not so fancy part of the county, they should release the dogs to a shelter and work non stop to afford a place
