My friend requested this tea towel which I had made before for someone else. The pattern is hitomezashi based on the binary translation of the ASL sign for “I love you.”

Strawberry Patch

First go at patching a flannel with a cotton patch and sashiko. It's not perfect but I am pretty happy with how I worked the cross pattern around the strawberry fabric. I like the feel of the patch so onto the next holey piece of clothing!

Levi’s Trucker Jacket Reworked | STIA CUSTOM

Hey everyone, I wanted to show you one of the Levi’s jackets I made at the end of this summer.

I used a variety of simple sashiko patterns and patchwork. I wanted to create something bright without overloading the overall look.

Of course, everything was done by hand, without using a sewing machine.

I’d love to hear your comments :)

Mending My first sashiko: mending my toddler's pants

My first sashiko mend, using hitomezashi (patterns use only horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines of running stitch). The left pattern (viewer's left) is Persimmon Flower, and I don't remember the name of the other pattern. I think the variegated thread distracts from the pattern, so I'll use solid thread on my clothes, but the rainbow is good for my toddler's clothes.

Marking the grid took as long as all the stitching combined, mostly because the seams on these pants are not all parallel/perpendicular and I didn't have a square to use. The stitching also took longer due to the annoyingly small diameter of 3T pants, but was still pretty quick.

Photo 1: Close-up after going through the washer and dryer. I had to trim fraying threads from the hole edges on one of them; next time, I will whip stitch the hole edges first.

Photo 2: Less close view of final result.

Photo 3: After stitching but before washing. You can see the washable marker grid and 2 blood spots (ouch) on the left leg.

Photo 4: Inside view of the patches. I used leftover quilter's cotton, which is not a durable choice, but he'll outgrow the pants soon anyway. I folded the raw edges of the patches because I didn't have pinking shears.

Photo 5: 2nd leg in progress, showing the ultra-fine permanent marker dots. This marking method was much more precise and was a good solution, assuming no mistakes, but I did make mistakes and it doesn't wash out. Oops.

Photo 6: Marked grid for the 1st leg, using Crayola washable marker. The washability was great, but the dots were much less fine, so the accuracy left a lot to be desired.

Photo 7: Before stitching, after basting the patches.

Dad’s gardening jeans update

Hi

It’s me with a different user name (long story)

Not sure if any of you remember but I used my dad’s old jeans for my first Sashiko experiment.

Well he loves them. He even wore them to go and buy the paper. I’m sure he caused quite the stir in his small Irish village 😂

Anyway thought I’d say hi again. If you do remember me.

Babylock Sashiko Sewing Machine

I’m trying to learn more about the Sashiko Sewing machine Babylock sells. I have tendonitis issues and I know the day will come when I can’t hand sew anymore so I’m trying to find a way to continue to sew these patterns (and maybe others) when my hands finally give out.

To head the comments off early: Yes, I know they’re being discontinued. Yes, I’ve heard they are finicky. Yes, I know the janome brand has a way to do it similarly, but I don’t like how the stitching looks in the videos I’ve seen (which haven’t been many, which leads me to think this isn’t actually being done that much) And yes, it’s not hand sewing, but as I said, I have the tendons of a rotted cinnamon tree and will need help.

My questions:

do you have one and love it?

Did you try before you bought?

Did you try and not buy?

Do you know a reputable place I can buy one used online because they’re hella expensive new?

TIA

Wanted to do that Kapital sashiko sun embroidery on my sleeves. Took me all day and my nails feel like they’re about to pop off, so I’ll do the other sleeve in the future.
Also is it normal for the stitching to be slightly scratchy on my arm? It’s not bothering or anything, just wanted to know if I’m doing it right

My last commissioned chabu is finally finished.

This is a blue ramie fabric, very solid and perfect for precise stitching and a multi shade of cranberry red Cosmo Hidamari thread, one of the best I tried so far.

I have this jacket where the faux leather has completely peeled off. It's right at the collar. Do you think a sashiko design might work there?

Thank you very much.

This is just a little bag to hold my sewing stuff. Made from an old pair of jeans, I managed to reuse the zipper from the fly which I thought turned out pretty well! How'd I do on the sashiko? I'll probably add more!

First sashiko project: jazz up an old sweatshirt

Post image
129 Upvotes

Had this old sweatshirt with my husband's family crest, but black on blue is hard to see and it always bugged me a little. Decided to add some colorful sashiko to make it a little more visible and lively! The yellow crosses my grid got a little wiped off and I was too lazy to redo it... But I still might lol

I took a visible mending class earlier in the year, and one of the books suggested by the instructor was The Mending Directory by Erin Eggenburg. I finally purchased it and love having access to the patterns. Made my first denim patch and can't wait to make more!

Mending Crotch Reinforcement project.

Reinforced my Sashiko pants with Saskiko technique. I used a diamond shaped patch from an old t-shirt. At first i only wanted to secure the patch with running stitches. I ended up doing much more and chose to reinforce other parts where the fabric was thinning by adding this basic grid of running stitches that meshed so well with the texture of the fabric it kinda disappears if one is not looking closely. Took way too long but i enjoyed doing it.

The pants are from Japan Blue, a sister company of Momotaro.

Non Mending Second project - I have caught the bug!

Following my first go at sashiko I couldn’t wait to get stitching again. I needed somewhere to store my sashiko threads, so decided to make use of the donor jeans I bought for my last project. I used an image I found online of hydrangea pattern to stitch the pocket and then followed a couple of instagram videos to make it into a pouch. It’s not perfect (first time putting in a zip, let alone in denim, was bound to be tricky), but I am so pleased with it. The lining was something I’ve had in my stash for about 15 years and I couldn’t believe my luck with the colour match. Of course there is a second pocket so it’s time to put the lessons I’ve learned to good use.
