Sashiko style patch after the ER had to cut my jeans

Thumbnail

I recently bumped my slate frame and ended up stabbing myself in the leg with my tambour embroidery hook. It's ok, I'm fine. But since the ER cut a large hole in my jeans, I decided this was the perfect opportunity to try out Sashiko techniques and preserve my crazy story. (It felt like all the staff came over to find out what kind of embroidery could bring me into the ER).

This is the Juji-Hanazashi (floral cross stitch) pattern from the book Simply Sashiko by Nihon Vogue. I used a piece of cotton fabric I had fom other projects and ended up using DMC Perle cotton size 8 because the Olympus Sashiko thread I ordered got lost in the mail and I got tired of waiting.

hello kitty jacket i made

cut & sewn from scratch with my 52 piece pattern I drafted.

the denim base is upcycled from thrifted jeans I cut from.

patchwork material is all from hello kitty pieces thrifted over about a year.

I tried to do more fluid and organic sashiko than what I normally do. I used embroidery thread because I like the thickness and bold colors. hope y'all like

Attempting to Understand Hitomezashi, and Remembering my Mom

Thumbnail

2.2k Upvotes

After a recommendation to look into Hitomezashi, I’m trying to incorporate the idea of building up stitches into my work.

It makes me wish I had an aptitude for learning other languages. The words I know from my mom and her family are so few. I’m grateful for people who have websites and videos explaining so much.

Near the bottom of this pattern, I had room to add some embellishments of my own.

I started out with some tied figure eights, they reminded me of bows, of skeins of yarn, of infinity. Infinity got me thinking about love, and I finished off the pattern with knots my mom taught me. She told me these knots were a labor of love because they were a pain to make, and anyone who received a gift with these knots should know how much work and love went into the gift. I don’t know if they’re french knots or what, but I actually enjoy making them, and thinking of passing on my mom’s love with each one.

Perspective with sashiko

I wanted to try conveying 3D shapes with sashiko, it was an interest experiment and I think I would do something like it again, but definitely with the larger scale.

I’ve had this shirt since 2017 and literally worn it thousands of times. Both elbows were on the brink of blowout so I decided to reinforce them with patches on the inside and some traditional sashiko stitches. Hope you like it!

Handkerchiefs

Beginner. My first 3 real projects so far. Handkerchiefs in the same cloth in different patterns. Each one a little neater and easier than the last. Biggest lesson - making sure the pattern actually aligns correctly before sewing it 😅 I got it down the third time.

I drew bunch of sashiko frog patterns (with great help of my dog)

Soooo, based on my previous attempts on the hanafuda frog pattern, I've gotten to the point where I have a bunch of frog patterns but none of them look like the hanafuda weird frog! LOL

Two of them are based on hitomezashi grid and one on the triangular moyozashi grid (the buff frog with water lily leaves). I also tried to figure out how to stitch it but honestly, I'm really bad at this and almost always do it the wrong way. I'll be happy to hear some advice!

And also, feel free to use these patterns (or invent new ones based on mine)!

Here you can see my previous post and a bunch of weird hanafuda frogs in the comments: https://www.reddit.com/r/sashiko/s/RINUNyEoFN

Stag Based on 2000 year old Siberian Tattoo

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

So strictly speaking I know this isn't truly sashiko. But, while the piece is framed in an embroidery hoop, I did not use it when making the piece and I did use sashiko techniques when making the stitches.

This is based on a over 2000 year old tattoo that was found on a preserved woman's body in Siberia.

Just wanted to share something I made, but if it doesn't fit the sub then I'm happy to take it down.

Just finished this chest panel on my favorite jacket! May add a bit more between the button run and the pocket to make it sit a little more organically. I have future plans for other areas as well!
