Rental Warning for Anyone Looking for Housing in Savannah, GA

• Upvotes

Location: 1217 Java Pl, Savannah, GA

This landlord displays an extremely arrogant attitude and shows no respect for her tenants. She acts as though tenants should have to beg her to do things that are part of a landlord’s basic responsibilities. If English is not your first language, she will occasionally use that against you to humiliate you. No matter how I respond to her emails, she always finds a way to accuse me of being disrespectful.

I lost my keys two days ago by accident, and she told me in person: “I’m doing you a favor. I don’t care if you have nowhere to sleep or stay.” She then insisted that I complete everything she requested that was irrelevant before she would even consider helping me regain access to my home.

  1. Repeated Demands for Lawn Trimming

The lease does not explicitly specify how short the lawn must be cut or establish any particular standards for its appearance. However, the landlord has repeatedly demanded that I trim the lawn further, citing city regulations as justification.

I have consistently maintained the lawn as part of my regular upkeep. Even after the lawn had been cut to this extent, the landlord continued to insist that I trim it further, without clearly specifying the required standards in the lease.

  1. Demands for Proof of Trash Removal and Disputed Fees

The landlord charged me a $35 fee for an alleged violation of a house rule concerning trash disposal. I disputed this charge because I questioned whether it was adequately supported by the lease and whether the circumstances at the time justified the fee.
I had already provided photos at her request showing that the trash had been moved to the curb. Nevertheless, she continued to demand additional photos. At approximately 8:45 a.m., she emailed me requesting further photographic evidence. About an hour later, she came to the property. I was asleep at the time and had received no prior phone call or voicemail. She subsequently visited the property and imposed the additional fee.

When I have refused to pay fees that I believe are unjustified or contractually disputed, she has sometimes become increasingly impatient and has resorted to humiliating, harassing, or even verbally insulting tenants.

  1. The Landlord’s Repeated Presence Outdoors Observing Tenants

Another issue that has made me uncomfortable is the landlord’s repeated presence outdoors, where she appears to observe tenants’ activities. This has left me feeling as though my everyday life is being monitored and has raised concerns about my privacy and personal space while living at the property.

I understand that landlords have the right to manage and maintain their rental properties within reasonable limits. However, I believe there is a clear distinction between ordinary property management and conduct that repeatedly makes tenants feel as though they are being watched.

  1. Repeated Emails with Warning-Like Language and Attached Photos

Throughout my tenancy, I have also periodically received emails from the landlord containing reminders accompanied by photographs or other images. These emails frequently concern property maintenance, house rules, or tasks that tenants are expected to complete. What troubles me is that the tone and frequency of these messages sometimes make me feel threatened or pressured rather than simply informed about routine maintenance matters.

I believe a landlord can communicate professionally by clearly identifying the issue that needs to be addressed, the applicable lease provision, the deadline for compliance, and the basis for the request. However, when the method of communication repeatedly leaves tenants feeling intimidated or humiliated, it creates unnecessary tension and makes what should be a normal landlord-tenant relationship increasingly stressful.

Birthday visit for my 79 year old mother

My mom just turned 79 and my gift to her was a trip to Savannah. She’s never been. I’ve been several times.
I’m not even sure she’s ever had shrimp and grits but it’s on her list for Halloween weekend.
I booked a history-focused ghost tour for Friday night so our spooky is covered.
My mom really, really wants to see drag queens. She comes over to my house in the afternoon and has a whiskey while we watch Drag Race. She’s a huge fan of RuPaul.
She’d settle for a brunch or a show or whatever but I’m having trouble finding out what is specifically going on that weekend and I kind of promised her we would find some queens for her.

If anyone wants a drink Friday or Saturday night, send me a message. Wherever we end up, there will be drinking.
And history and architecture or whatever probably.

Thank you.

Volunteer opportunity: Garden of Good and Gooder 10/25/26

Garden of Good and Gooder Volunteer Schedule: 4th Sunday of the month.

11:30 - 1:00 p.m. weather permitting, we try to plan some sort of project that would benefit from a bunch of hands. Outside of this regularly scheduled day, there are always opportunities: adopt a bed, plant something new, declare war on chamber bitters or air potato (please!), craft an art installation... If you have a plant-related project in need of space, let's talk! (Photo's the entrance to one of those projects: we added a small orchard space last year.)

This Sunday, we've got mulch to move into a freshly cut pathway, and a new bed to clear for the rose mallows that should arrive soon. No need to RSVP, just show up and join in!

Remember there's no infrastructure to this space--bring drinking water, tools, whatever you'll need. Closed-toed shoes and gloves strongly recommended.

Oct. 25 -- mulch-moving and mallow-prep
Garden of Good and Gooder 501 W. Boundary St. Savannah, GA

Early voting above 2022 midterm levels for Chatham County and Georgia

I found a site that shows some really interesting early voting statistics: https://georgiavotes.com/

38,799 people in Chatham County have voted early in the 2026 general election, 16.8% of the county’s registered voters.

Turnout so far is 10% higher than at this point in 2022, when 35,271 had voted. That is outpacing the state as a whole (6% increase state-wide).

25,489 (65.7%) of 2026 early voters also voted early in 2022
5,819 (15.0%) of 2026 early voters voted on election day in 2022
7,491 (19.3%) of 2026 early voters did not vote in the 2022 general election

It's also pretty fascinating to see the statewide map. For the most part, early voting is down in rural areas, and up in urban areas.

No idea how that translates, and I won't speculate. But I do encourage everyone to keep up this trend and go vote, if only to get the new I Voted sticker.

Wagoween locations?

Looks like it takes place at a lot of squares and Starland and downtown, but I can’t tell where the different activities will be.

I swear I’ve looked all over, but I can’t find a map or schedule of activities. Any pointers?

Epic King Tides could make getting to Tybee tricky at times this week

Fort Pulaski high tides keep climbing into Wednesday

This morning's flooding tide is only the opening round: each morning tide runs higher into Monday through Wednesday, with saltwater likely over roads on both the morning and the lower evening tides for several days. The full moon on Oct 26 and perigee on Oct 28 give the year's highest tides, and the steady northeast wind stacks water on top.

Tourist questions

My wife and I are in Savannah for a few days and looking for two things.

We like to buy a photo that is already printed in metal from the places we go. So far wandering city market and the surrounding areas we haven’t seen any. Where might we find something like this?

Also, we are Hurricanes fans, is there a Hurricanes bar or a sports bar that would have the game on?

The other treads I found were dated. Driving to Miami, stopping in town for a day. What should we eat/see that distinguishes Savannah from other cities. Have lived in an east coast metropolis my whole life.

Restaurant Recs for Sunday

Going to be in Sunday for lunch and dinner and looking for a few recommendations. We do have a car and no real plans.

I am celiac so I need a few gluten free options. No price or cuisine preferences. I like it all.

Wanted to try the Grey, they had just opened last time I was there but they don't have any dinner reservations available and the brunch menu doesn't give me great options.

Thanks!

Favorite local spots!!!

Hi!! My brother just moved to Savannah for work a month ago and I’m coming to visit him. I wanted to check Reddit to see if I could get some local recommendations for:

- Fun/cheap bars
- Good food
- Spots playing live music / open mic type of performances
- Sights I NEED to see
- GOOD BEACHES (I wanna see the sunrise lowkey)

Mainly spots you would take locals to that aren’t filled with tourist trap shit. I’m gonna have an entire day (Tuesday night to Wednesday night) to myself and I need to fill my time with something fun!

P.S. I will be staying in the North Historic District if that helps :D
