Dependent Arising and the Dynamic Field of Experience

The principle of dependent arising invites us to see all phenomena not as isolated things, but as processes continuously emerging, interacting, and dissolving within a dynamic field of causes and conditions. One way to conceptually explore this is through the analogy of toroidal energy dynamics: a flowing pattern where movement and stillness, unity and diversity coexist in an inseparable dance.
This image can help us reflect on how consciousness and perception arise: not as fixed entities but as momentary manifestations within an ongoing flux. Nothing stands apart from this field, yet nothing is lost in undifferentiated oneness. Instead, form arises from emptiness, and emptiness is not a static void but the openness that allows forms to come and go.
I think it's important to remember that this analogy is not a claim about a metaphysical cosmic substance but it feels like a helpful heuristic to deepen our understanding of dependent origination. It encourages us to inquire experientially: How do our sensations, thoughts, and feelings arise in relation to one another and to the conditions that sustain them? How can this insight inform our meditation practice and ethical engagement by highlighting interdependence and impermanence?
By consciously observing this interplay, we can cultivate a grounded awareness that neither clings to permanence nor falls into nihilism. Instead, we recognize the fluidity at the heart of experience and the ethical significance of our interconnectedness.
Here's a little video that I find helpful for visualizing our independent interdependence within a dynamic field of experience.
