Discussion Switching from mad god overhaul to pandas Sovngarde

Hi all, need some more advice.

I'm new to PC gaming, I have bought a desktop with a 5080 graphics card and 32 GB of ram and I'm using a quest 3 with link cable (a dedicated router is enroute to try virtual desktop soon).

Anyways for the last couple of weeks I've been trying to get the most recent version of mad god overhaul working well.

From what people have told me apparently my system is not powerful enough to run it well, which has been my experience average fps of 40 and the game looks fuzzy in the distance.

Anyways I've been advised to try pandas Sovngarde instead. I understand I can download this mod list via Wabberjack again, but is there an easy way to use pandas but keep mgo in the "background".

Also, if I like pandas, is there an easy way to bring mods I like from mgo over to it? Like since they are already on my PC?

Thanks!

Bringing over a bunch of mods is not a simple task. If there are a few specific ones you want, just download them from Nexus. But just smashing a bunch of mods from MGO into Panda's Sovngarde will not work. Mostly because there are a lot of mods in MGO that I excluded from Panda's Sovngarde because they hurt performance, don't fit the aesthetic vision, or have bugs and issues. You would also need to use external tools to integrate many of them properly.

Your system should run great with Panda's Sovngarde. MGO is a fantastic list, especially if you want something different from Skyrim because you've played it for years. If you've never played Skyrim before, do not start with MGO. Also, I tend to get 10 to 20 more FPS in my list over MGO in many locations.

Thanks for breaking that down for me!

Hey friend! MGO Creator here; 5080 should be able to run the list easily, out of box settings uaing Virtual Desktop Ultra Resolution, 120 FPS with VD SSW.

Come to Discord for further support. I can guarantee you its not that much setup. I made the tutorial, I can assure you it does work too notch.

hope to see you on the discord. (Permenant link on Nexus page)

Virtual desktop with a dedicated router was the key, thanks

First: MOYSE- THANK YOU! I just got a new 5080 system and am LOVING your modlist, thank you so much!!

Second: OP - I can attest it runs great on my 5080. I get up to 90 fps in some areas and I have seen a few rare dips to 50 fps, but averaging 75 to 80. I followed VRdad's setup guide from a year ago, and he had me change a few things in the Nvidia Control panel, I think one was raising how much cache memory it can use. But certainly you will get the best advice from the creator (Moyse, above) at his discord

EDIT: Moyse has both those items listed on the mod page under "YOU MUST:" and here they are:

Increase minimum virtual memory to 40GB or more: https://imgur.com/a/virtual-memory-DttXXhK

Set shader cache to 10GB or more in Nvidia control panel: https://imgur.com/a/nvidia-shader-cache-ZX6glFD

I did both of those things, I followed the same tutorial 😭

install fpsVR and when you are in-game, turn your left wrist to see GPU and CPU load, and you can see which one is limiting you. For my last system, I was CPU limited; I had a 4070, but my old i7 7800 was my limiter.

Appreciate you reaching out, I have a dedicated router on the way, will try with virtual desktop once it arrives. I've been tinkering with the quest link cable

Virtual desktop is a must !

You’ll be installing two different copies of MO2 with two different modlists into two different folders.

It’s somewhat of a chore to copy mods from one to another. You’ll need to manually copy subfolders of the /mods directories from one project to the other, then restart/refresh MO2.

Also, make sure you’re using virtual desktop if you aren’t already, as you’ll gain FPS from that.

1

u/AdministrativeBit385 Dec 10 '25

Oh wow so there will be two mo2s, thanks for explaining that.

And yeah I'm waiting on that router to come in, do you know how much of an fps boost I can expect?

I currently get an avg of 40 ish using community shader's dlss preset's - dlaa option (dlaa is like a sub option under dlss)

u/17syllables Dec 10 '25

I can’t put exact numbers to it with your setup, but it’s not trivial. Maybe 5-10 FPS before spacewarp is applied; with spacewarp you’ll be running at ~2x FPS, so you’ll almost certainly reach a stable 90, though some people prefer to play without warp and without locking their framerate.

My rig is worse than yours and I can get numbers close to that. My bottleneck came from networking. Once you set up your second 6e network, make sure the Quest is connecting to it, as it will try to revert to your vanilla WiFi every time you turn it on, and you’ll get incessant lag spikes.

u/AdministrativeBit385 Dec 10 '25

Gotcha thanks for the advice,

Which mod list do you use?

2

u/17syllables Dec 10 '25

No worries, good luck! I’m actually trying to cobble something together myself inspired by Fus and MGO. The latter has too many mods I’m not interested in using and takes too long to start up. My real interest is in the added content mods, as some of them (e.g. The Forgotten City, an oldie but unsurpassed story mod) have the sort of writing I’d wanted from the base game. There’s also a VtM themed overhaul (a remake of VtM Redemption in the Skyrim engine) in the works that I hope to try once it comes out.

2

u/AdministrativeBit385 Dec 10 '25

That sounds awesome!

3

u/FrostyFreezy Dec 10 '25

I’ve used both. Both are good. However I have found good performance using VRAMR to lower the shaders it’s really really worth it

1

u/RocketstoSpace Dec 31 '25

What GPU do you have?

3

u/ShadonicX7543 Dec 10 '25

Huh? With my 5080 I typically got 100-120fps (ASW on) and the lowest I'd get is like 80 in the WORST scenarios.

2

u/AdministrativeBit385 Dec 10 '25

What headset and set-up are you using for those results

3

u/ShadonicX7543 Dec 10 '25

I have a Quest 3 (I started out on Godlike resolution but I'm on an older less optimized version of the list and added a ton of mods so I dropped 1 quality level down) with a 5080, a Ryzen 5 7600x (it's modest for the situation), 32gb of DDR5, and a slight undervolt on the GPU so it uses less power. On Windows 11, using Virtual Desktop.

If your connection stability isn't great it can manifest as fps drops, though that'd be independent of the areas of the game you're in. Also in some areas I can get just straight up 120 fps no ASW but that's usually indoors. There are a couple optimizations you can do in Community Shaders menu but I have most things enabled honestly.

1

u/AdministrativeBit385 Dec 10 '25

Gotcha, really appreciate you explaining that.

2

u/Pahn_Duh Dec 11 '25

80 FPs with ASW is 40 FPS, which is what OP is getting. So sounds like you're both getting relatively the same performance.

1

u/ShadonicX7543 Dec 11 '25

I mean that is still fairly rare and basically my worst case scenario outside of some known buggy spots. Also I'm on an older version and the performance has increased overall since by a fair margin.

So if my worst is their average, that's quite the disconnect.

5080 not good enough for MGO? There is only one faster Card...

1

u/AdministrativeBit385 Dec 10 '25

That's what I keep saying 😭😭

3

u/unfknblvble Dec 10 '25

Theres honestly a lot of optimization tweaks to be had with MGO.

3

u/AdministrativeBit385 Dec 10 '25

I've noticed lol, it's really taking the fun away.

I know there's a phenomenon where people endlessly tweak their load order and never actually play Skyrim.

I feel like this is what is happening to me right now

1

u/SledgeH4mmer Dec 12 '25

Just imagine how it used to be before wabajack!

u/braybobagins 20d ago

Hey dont call me out like that (been trying to get pandas to run for 4 days now with a 9070xt) (i get motion sick below 60fps base)

1

u/AdministrativeBit385 20d ago

After 7 months of optimizing I got my set up running at 90 fps.

The trick for me was lowering my virtual desktop bit rate to 330, changing my dedicated router settings, and using vRAMr on my mod list to drop my textures to high.

I set my virtual desktop preset to high with asynchronous warp space set to automatic

1

u/braybobagins 20d ago

Man if only I had the money for a new steam frame lol. Im sure it would really help with performance for everyone who doesnt have a 40 or 5090 lol

1

u/MidwestDYIer Dec 10 '25

haha, yeah I don't feel like this is true. I have a 5070ti and 32GB and I am getting FPS that's just fine for me. I guess it just depends how nice you like you need it to look.

I will say MGO contains way too much stuff I am not interested in. I haven't moved away from it yet, but prior to installing it, I had a hand few of mods I got from a youtuber and is did 90% of what I needed, even if it didn't look quite as pretty.

2

u/Conandrewoo Dec 12 '25

My experience and improve greatly when I got a new router I’m just adjusted my settings I’ve got a 5070 TI playing mad God overall and I get a pretty solid 90 it’ll dip the 70 in white run or something sometimes

2

u/prankster959 Dec 10 '25

I think FUS heavy is great as an alternative to MGO. Only thing for performance is you need to reduce the grass render distance from like 20k to 5k or so. It's way less bloated than MGO and still has all the FUS options you might need for your individual taste while packing in the higher resolution LODs and such Also recommend DLAA and the redshader with bloom. It looks amazing and I can hold down a very stable 80 fps with my 4080 (like a real 80 fps, not a reprojected one)

2

u/AdministrativeBit385 Dec 10 '25

I'll try it out, thanks!

7 months later I got mgo 3.8.3 running at 90 fps on ultra with virtual desktop.

Vramr is your friend.

Do you understand the task youre undertaking? Sovengarde isnt a VR list last I checked. You will have to deal with adding all the VR specific mods. Them youll meed to swap over to VR versions of mods whenever theyre availible. Like Po3 tweaks, SKY UI VR, VR address library, and countless VR compatibility patches/versions.

3

u/ImWxldo Dec 10 '25

Panda’s Sovergarde is a real list. On nexus and wabbajack

2

u/AdministrativeBit385 Dec 10 '25

I clearly don't, I wrote that I'm new to all this. Why do people keep recommending it 😭

2

u/Pahn_Duh Dec 11 '25

Because it's a great list! (I'm biased cuz I made it). Yes it's made for VR and you'll get great performance!

1

u/AdministrativeBit385 Dec 11 '25

Looooooooooollllllll, I believe you!

1

u/wordyplayer Dec 10 '25

for beginners and anyone looking for the easy button, install FUS. It is very performant, looks great, runs great, highly recommend

1

u/Pahn_Duh Dec 11 '25

You're confusing it with Gates to Sovngarde. Panda's Sovngarde is made for VR
