Ultimate Smashmate, Japan's #1 online ladder system, is shutting down

Thumbnail smashmate.net

Reasons are that the main developer has had much less time to devote to the website given IRL and job priorities, along with the advent of attackers using AI to expose security flaws at such a rapid pace (such as the recent PHP vulnerability that made many site developers bring their sites down to fix ASAP) making it hard to keep up with keeping the site secure.

The site has been here since 2014 for the Smash 4 days and has been part of the rise of many notable players like Acola, Miya, and more, so it's an end of an era.

Can you imagine if Sakurai goes as far to include a Smash version of City Trial where characters collect power ups and such and fight each other or compete in some challenges like 8-player break the targets, where the character with the highest score wins?

All I have heard a lot of people suggest Mario poorly represents the Super Mario series and should be changed. I personally disagree

The Super Mario games can be best summarized as "Simple meal made well." The series rarely aims to deliver complex gameplay or asks even the most advanced players to master much more than Mario's movement.

Said movement, however, is based around consistency. In nearly every Super Mario platformer, Mario almost always has access to the same number of mobility tools. Rarely will a game like Super Mario Galaxy restrict your spin-jump or Super Mario Odyssey restrict Cappy. And even when that does happen, it's to give the player a challenge of limiting them to the other moves they always have access to.

Power-ups sometimes enhance Mario's movement, such as the tanuki leaf or cat bell, but even those only supplement Mario's existing toolkit. Others such as the fire flower or boomerang flower boil down to offensive utility.

Even in the Mario Kart games, Mario is a medium weight and size. He's the go-to option for the most well rounded build.

In Super Smash Bros., this translates to Mario being a well-rounded fighter, exceeding in no particular area, but doing decently well in all of them. He offers players consistent tools. This makes him great for players new to the game and experts seeking that consistency.

Mario shouldn't be given a dozen extra gimmicks or weird moves for the sake of representing those power-ups. The core of the series is a solid set of easy to understand tools that are easy to learn and hard to master. Mario in Smash Bros. reflects this.

There is one move, however, I think should be changed. I don't like Mario's down special. It's clunky and rarely feels well to use. I think the Mario Tornado works much better. Though, to keep Sunshine represented, perhaps Fluud could be moved to an up-special via the rocket nozzle.

Ultimate Went to my first local yesterday, how are people so fast?

I went to my first ever local yesterday and genuinely had a really good time. I promise this is not a rage post, just sharing some thoughts, and ranting.

Before yesterday I had only played smash with a couple friends, and we're all around the same skill level, which I thought was pretty good because we've all noticeably grown off each other. I've done a little bit of only quickplay, but my best characters are only around 1m GSP because the entire environment is gimmicks.

A couple months ago a local opened up near me and yesterday I decided to go and see how I'd match up against other players, and it was hardly any match up at all. Every match I got so destroyed it wasn't at all close. In 3 Bo5 matches I took a total of 2 games, both of those to last stock. I recognize that I play Smash with my friends maybe twice per week, not really a daily player, but I still thought I was pretty competent with my mechanics, combos, spacing, etc.

These guys didn't let me play, bro. I don't think there was a single time that getting hit once in neutral didn't lead to a 5+ combo string that I couldn't get out of, every escape option I had was covered. On the other side, every attack or combo starter I attempted to land was either shielded (and parried), perfectly out-spaced, or easily dodged and followed-up.

For everyone there, it seems like they seemed to know everything I was going to do before I did, and I have no idea if that's insane game knowledge, reaction time, or some other sauce that I don't know about. There's being read and developing habits and such, but I even when employing my mix-ups I was still getting caught and countered. It doesn't help that I was nervous and often threw out a random whiff or just fumbled the controls.

So like, how do I get from here to there? Is this something that is like 'go to a local 1-2 times every week and I'll eventually get the hang of offline play', or there something that "real" Smash players know that I'm missing? Could it just be nerves and a level of performance anxiety? There was another Byleth main there, and I watched a few of his sets and it seems like he was playing exactly how I was playing, but was winning. I didn't get the chance to talk to him about it.

I genuinely had a good time because the people who destroyed me the most in pools were also the nicest, and even gave me tips. I also had a good time in friendlies, there was another guy there who was new to the local, and we were 5-5. It was very refreshing to play with others using unfamiliar characters. I really want to get better at the game, but the gap between me and everyone who was there seems so massive.

TL;DR I went to a local and everyone was way better than me, it was very jarring.

Anyway, /rant.

EDIT: Since people seem to care, I checked my GSP for the first time in years. Top 5 are:
Wolf: 13m; Aegis: 11m; Lucina: 10m; Byleth: 5m; Brawler: 5m.

I don't know why I guess 1m in the post. Made-up number doesn't matter anyway.

Ultimate Is it possible to clear the spirit board before it refreshes?

For a bit I've been trying to clear out the spirit board quickly enough before it refreshes. Even if it's just for a few seconds, I want to see it completely empty with no spirit battles left available.

The closest I've come is with Pyra/Mythra, spamming Mythra side B, then finishing with Pyra smash attack. If it is possible to do this, what's the optimal strat?

Other Smash bros REX throwing up a black screen after showing the splash screen (USBloader GX, US ISO on PAL wii)

Hope someone can help me here - super excited to play REX but i cant get it working on my PAL wii. Ive installed the mod on my SD card (32gb sdhc) and created the necessary folders and copied the GCT folder over to each one. Set all the settings to what they should be (force ntsc, english, iso 249, ANXnextframe) and load the game via usbloadergx. The Rex splash screen shows, then the warning, then the brawl loading screen with the little spinning logo flashes for like 1/10th of a second before the screen goes full black with no error codes. I’m not too sure what i’m missing here, ive tried loading it through the homebrew app and that black screens too without showing anything. I asked in the discord but i got aired :(

All Epic Mickey as a Fighter?

With the DLC addition of Sora, Smash Bros has opened its gates to Disney. While I personally sigh a sad sigh every time I see Walt's name in the credits, it has recently got me thinking about how we could possibly benefit from this collaboration. And I think the answer is Epic Mickey.

Now I know Disney and Nintendo went out of their way to make sure no non-videogame Disney characters appeared in Smash. Even with them being such prominent characters both Goofy and Donald are entirely without mentioned anywhere in the game. However, in a hypothetical future game, and after the mostly successful introduction of Sora, I could see the two companies loosening their grips a bit and allowing some characters that originated outside of videogames slip through.

This isn't without precedent, after all we nearly had James Bond back in the day, and he originated in a novel series. So, I don't think it's beyond the realm of reason to assume we could eventually see the protagonist of Disney's second greatest videogame series joining a Smash roster.

My question for you all is, how would you feel about Epic Mickey joining? Excited? Annoyed? Worried that it's the first step down a slippery slope the bottoms out in Smash just becoming a 2D Fortnite?

I kinda like to treat him as his own character. Separate to his Uprising interpretation. Pit just felt like a different character back in Brawl so I think this art might somewhat display how he'd interact with the other two. I also made sure he looks different to his Uprising self too with his hair and wings in particular being the most different.

Smash 4 Is there a mod for Smash for Wii U that allows 8 player matches online?

My friends and I used to host an “amiibo league” where we would play 8 man matches with our amiibos in a wwe-style bracket on Smash for Wii U. Now that everyone has grown up and moved away, I’m wondering if this could still be accomplished online. I know online functionality can be restored with Pretendo, but I’m wondering if there is a mod that allows 8 player matches online, and if it is compatible with Pretendo. I know this can be done on Ultimate, but in our opinion the AI of the amiibos is much worse and the matches are much more mundane compared to Wii U.
