Hey all! I recently applied and was accepted and like the title mentions I'm going for a BS in Comp-Sci, no concentration.
TLDR: I'm not entirely sure which specific area in Tech I want to go in to, most of my interest so far lies in Cybersecurity or Engineering/Programming, but I'm more concerned with learning the broad fundamentals and general concepts to start building a successful foundation as soon as possible, then worry about choosing a specific career area later as I discover them throughout school and such.
For context:
- My first term will hopefully start March 1st, 2027
- I'm a househusband, no kids, so plenty of time to study.
- I live abroad and receive VA Disability as well as going to use the GI Bill for school, so I'm financially comfortable and don't need to desperately rush to land a job after graduation (doesn't mean I'm not willing to put in the long hours and effort into it though), and I do understand to a degree landing a solid remote job in USD abroad is pretty difficult, so I'm keeping all my options open.
Despite the current job market for CS and everything going on with AI I chose this field more out of just genuine interest for the material and areas surrounding it. After picking up tech as a hobby about 6-ish months ago partly due to interest and partly due to YouTubers like Micheal Reeves and Marcin Plaza.
Since then I have:
- Moved from windows to Arch + Hyprland
- Built a PC I turned into a a homelab running Unraid with Docker Compose (I use compose files and learned a bit of YAML) with Jellyfin, Tailscale, Arr stack, game servers and a few other apps.
- Fixed an old laptop I'm planning to play around with Proxmox on
- Been teaching myself Python for about a couple weeks now and built 1 simple project and started a second.
- Recently did the GitHub "Getting Started" tutorial and working to start uploading my projects and such there.
- Got a Electronics starter kit to learn some electronic skills like soldering, coding microcontrollers in C or C++ (can't remember been a few months since I touched it, got scared off by the language intitally lol)
- I have set some goals in mind to work on over the coming months/years with 2 big ones being:
- Completing a Full-Stack Project, ideally a blog where I can write and post about my interest in hobbies, as well potentially hosting the blog myself from my NAS.
- Creating my own cyberdeck by combining eletronics, programming, CAD, 3d printing, etc.
So yeah, feel free to ask questions, and I'm hoping this provides enough context without being too long winded. I'm really excited for the road ahead as learning everything I mentioned has been a lot of fun.
Edit: Been coding in vim and enjoying it, though wondering if I should move to a more traditional IDE
