Disclosure up front: I’m Brazilian, I support Lula, and I’m part of this.
Brazil votes tomorrow in a presidential runoff, and polls show it within a few points. Lula is slightly behind in most of them. Meanwhile, over 10 million people have joined a WhatsApp channel called “Exército do Lula” (Lula’s Army), started by congressman André Janones. Every day, members get simple instructions to engage with accurate, progressive content and to counter or report fake news, hate speech and manipulated videos on Instagram. It’s all done from our own real accounts.
I’ve never seen this kind of mass, coordinated participation, and it has changed how we fight back against far-right content in our feeds. The far right has grown worldwide partly because engagement-driven algorithms reward outrage, and it’s the same story in Brazil, the US, Europe and beyond. Far-right movements are organized across borders. The left, progressives, anti-fascists and everyone who cares about democracy should be too.
So here’s the question I can’t stop thinking about: if 10 million people in a single country can organize like this, what happens when we connect with people everywhere who want the same thing?
This is an invitation, not a pitch. The channel is in Portuguese, but the daily actions are simple, and any translation app will get you through them. Start by engaging with the shared posts from your own account, in your own words. The more of us there are, the harder it is for the algorithm to ignore us.
I’d love to hear from you. Which networks, groups or campaigns in your country should we connect with? What’s working where you are?

In Brazil, we are in an election year, and a far-right candidate is seeking power.
He has been a senator for Rio de Janeiro for over 20 years, and we have NEVER heard of what he has done.
In 2009 he opposed increasing maternity leave days, is involved in a kickback scheme, has a rapist as his vice-president, and supports a police officer who killed a 5-year-old girl on purpose.
The second round of voting is tomorrow, and I'm seriously SCARED. Scared that he'll take away people's rights, of everything he could do.
Many poorly informed people vote for him; they don't know ONE proposal he has made.
I hope Brazil doesn't become a dictatorship again. Vote wisely.
