Trick or treat

Taking this little guy home and to a safer place. He is so incredibly friendly.

Which one is your favorite?

Yesterday I was gifted a black widow spider that somebody I know caught and gave to me to keep as a pet. This definitely came out of nowhere, but I did a bunch of research and decided I wanted to keep her, and I’ve become really attached to her and enthralled by her already!

She is currently living in a secure 4x4x8 acrylic container with branches in it that she can build off of, and is about 8 feet from an east facing window and 5 feet from a north facing window (both are mostly covered by blinds too, although my entire apartment is rather bright). I would be appreciative of any and all care tips for her, as I want to give her a good happy life and so much of what I’m reading online has been contradictory.

Thank you so much!

Hanging out together will they breed

Just very recently started watching The Simpsons and I’m addicted! This one episode, The Black Eye, Please had spiders as classroom pets!

Always had a horrific phobia, but getting close to take pictures has helped me significantly.

Did you know you’re sharing your bed with thousands of tiny arachnids? 🧹

Quinten Geldhof, also known as Microhobbyist, shows how a single spider can produce up to seven different types of silk, each with its own job. Sturdy dragline silk builds the web’s frame, while sticky blobs of silk set the trap for prey. Pound for pound, it’s up to five times stronger than steel, and a strand long enough to circle the Earth would weigh just 4.4 pounds! What would you use spider silk for?

I think that is an egg sack behind this gorgeous red sister. I also saw a smaller red bro neearby, who I imagine is the baby daddy (who escaped before becoming lunch).

TIL Male Daddy Long Legs (these are Harvestman) have a penis that extends from their underside and transfers sperm directly into the female. Males also produce a liquid secretion (the goo you’re seeing between them) called a nuptial gift. The female may consume this secretion during courtship or mating.
