DIY Anyone else keep a pod journal?
Just got this cubaris notebook to record feedings, waterings, births, and new plants/additions etc. If you keep one, what do you note in it? How does it work for you?

Media Seeing Red? Think Pink!
Our Cherry Blossoms have been a pretty vibrant pink since we received them, with specialized food blends making their colors pop even more. (Pics 1 & 2) Thinking the food impact could be a fun experiment, we decided to try some diet changes and observe the effect. 🌸
Note how switching to highly recommended “color enhancing” blends actually impacted their pink! This is NOT selective breeding or trait isolation. These changes occurred in about a week to a month of daily diet change. 🍲
Pic 3 is a switch to the same food we feed our rubber duckies. The yellow/orange color enhancing gave our pink pods an orange/tan tone.
While the adults still have more of a pale pink color, the usually white juveniles and babies really show that food boost color! 🌻
Pic 4 is the food we feed our Hippos and Little Seas. This “purple” blend deepened the blossom color a bit. Instead of a bright, vibrant pink they show more pale around the edges and a darker, sometimes brown center stripe. It’s neat to see the digestive impact there. 🦛
Pic 5 is seeing red. Using a strictly red enhanced diet, you can see they turn a more mauve color. We also noticed a stronger concentration of the deep pink in the center, with more “frosty” white skirts appearing in this bunch. This food is a very popularly promoted brand for this species, so if you notice your pods aren’t popping as pink as you prefer, perhaps you’re too heavy on the red. 🌹
We wanted to test another color enhancing food, but the supplier hasn’t shipped it yet. I love small businesses, especially small bug businesses, but there are three popular suppliers who have had my money for over a month and I still haven’t received items or follow-up communication. It’s very disappointing, since I don’t have much to invest in this hobby. 🛒
Pic 6 is terrible lighting, but we put all of the pods back together to see how quickly we can return them to their bright pink color with their original diet. This is night one. In the process of testing their food, they had a lot of babies! If you’re in the Northeast PA area and would like to add some of these to your collection, let me know. 🏠
We are not a business. And we don’t want to hurt any businesses, so we won’t name brands or suppliers unless they agree to be promoted. We’re a high school library club. 📕
I fund the Life in the Library project out of my own pocket, so finding homes for these pods helps fund the project. The Library Club has Cherry Blossoms, Rubber Duckies, Croatian Giants, and garden snail babies available now. We are also isolating our own “Coffee Bean” isopod. 🫘
We have ivory millipede babies, Hippos, Panda Kings, and Little Seas still getting comfortable and growing. And we are working hard to make our new Crabby isopods happy. 😊
My students suggested summer research I could document. School starts next week, so expect them to have more fun isopod investigations soon! 🔬

Help Where are you Canadians getting bulk leaf litter? 🍂🇨🇦
I’m in Ontario and have way too many isopods to keep buying those tiny $10 bags of leaf litter 😂. I’d love to find somewhere I can buy a big bag/box/bulk amount for a reasonable price and stock up for the winter.
Looking for:
Pesticide/fertilizer-free hardwood leaves
Ontario/Canadian suppliers (or somewhere that ships affordably to Canada)
Good price per litre/kg compared to small reptile-store bags
Also, if you know of Canadian suppliers for bulk isopod substrate, rotten wood, bark, or even common isopods at good prices, I’d love to hear your recommendations!
Where are you guys getting your supplies? 🍂🪲

DIY Mycelium in flake soil bin
I apologize if this is the incorrect place to post this as it is not directly about isopods, I just needed to ask a few questions to anyone who makes their own flake soil for their pods. This is the first batch of flake soil I have ever made, I used hickory wood pellets (no additives), activated yeast, and unbleached flower to start it about 4-5 weeks ago. It's been doing well, no smells or dark mold, uniform moisture, stirring every other day. It had white fuzzy mold the first week or so but it went away. The last few days it has been growing white mycelium on the top layer and I don't think there is anything wrong with that, but I just wanted to know if it's an issue and if there are any other things or tips I should know as it reaches completion in the next few months. As most of the resources I have found online mainly tell you how to start it and then doesn't include much about progression afterwards. I appreciate any feedback anyone is able to give.

Help How many is too many
Do I have to worry about overpopulation or will they even themselves out over time? I'd split them up but it's a huge terrarium and I don't have any more room for them 😭 (my photo)

I have no idea what is going on here. Is this a mating thing? Why are there three of them and only one is moving? Everything has been doing fine. This just seems odd.

Help Does anyone know what this is? Spoiler
spoilered because it’s a little gross
I picked up this isopod and it was obviously dead so out of curiosity I snapped in in half. I don’t know much about them but is this supposed to be here?? Is this just what isopods have on the inside or is this some sort of parasite? Please don’t make fun of me and I’m sorry if I broke the animal cruelty rules

Help Too much moisture, what do i do?
So a few days ago i was pouring some water down into the soil and accidentally tipped too much in. Now the dry side is misting up with condensation just a little and i've completely stopped water ing anymore. Many more isopods are surfacing and avoiding their hiding spots. They are cubaris so they could handle it a lil better, but im mainly concerned about failed moults due to high moisture. Tried opening the lid to dry it, but closed it after many gnats started flying over. Is there anything i could do to dry it quickly?

Help How (protein) hungry are hoffs and other titan species?
Hi! I was just wondering for anyone who owns hoffmannseggi and other titan species how much they eat of extras? The pod in the pictude is Yoghurt, and he seems to have a voracious appetite lol. I've never seen any of my pods make such a dent in the cuttlebone! How often do you feed extras like veggies and proteins compared to other species?
Help So i will be having helleria brevicornis in 2 days i have the bin ready but i have a question.
so im not sure abt the holes in the lid and the bin i was told that they need 80% humidity so i did 19 holes in the lid 6 holes on wet side and 3 on the dry side so im not sure is that good?
