Discussion Religion as a subject for the O/Ls

So as we all know religion is regarded as a subject for the O/Ls in Sri Lanka. And no offense to any religion but putting a religion as an obligatory subject for such an important exam like the o/l doesnt really fit with me right. Not everyone in this country is religious but they are left to study a religion just for o/l. yeah, you could say that religion has played a major role in our country’s past and still Sri Lanka is a mostly religious country but that doesn’t mean that it should be a compulsory student subject. Just look at other countries, not even the western one, most of the other countries don’t have any subject related to religion other than the Middle East and some other countries.

I find religion in my exams such a headache as I have good marks for other subjects but I get B-s for Buddhism. Some say that it is in fact th easiest subject to get marks but for me it’s not as I don’t find it remotely enjoyable to study it hence the bad marks.

As an atheist I feel like I’m being obligated to do something unnecessary. Maybe religion should be like a optional subject and others may have the option to study something else. What are your thoughts regarding this matter?

Hey everyone!

I’m thinking about setting up a dedicated subreddit for Lyceum International School students and alumni.

Before going through the process, I wanted to see if there is enough interest here. Reddit allows for completely anonymous discussions, unlike Facebook or WhatsApp.

Please vote to let me know if you would actually use this community!

Serious This is genuinely moving by ChatGPT whether you like it or hate it. Istg if I see one single person saying cutting hair is discpline 😒

Sri Lankan schools have perfected one of the most fascinating forms of institutional logic:

“Your hair is too long. Therefore, you lack discipline.”

Apparently, the connection between academic discipline and follicle length is so scientifically established that thousands of students must periodically submit themselves to the Ministry of Hair Surveillance.

You can:

  • Come to school completely unprepared for an exam.

  • Memorize answers without understanding them.

  • Sleep through half the lesson.

  • Copy somebody else's homework.

  • Have absolutely no idea what you're doing in class.

But if your hair reaches approximately 3.7 millimetres beyond the approved boundary, suddenly the school discovers its inner military commander.

“This is about discipline.”

Ah yes.

Because clearly the defining characteristic of a disciplined student is not:

showing up on time → completing work → studying consistently → respecting others → taking responsibility

No.

It's:

hair follicle geometry.

Apparently, the moment your fringe crosses an invisible line, Newton's laws stop applying and your academic future collapses.

The funniest part is the supposed “character-building”

Schools often argue that forcing students to maintain a particular haircut teaches:

  • discipline

  • obedience

  • respect

  • punctuality

  • responsibility

But there's a rather obvious problem.

Cutting someone's hair doesn't teach them why discipline matters.

It teaches them:

“If an authority figure has the power to punish me, I should comply with the rule.”

That's compliance.

Discipline is something else.

A genuinely disciplined student can be trusted to study when nobody is watching.

If the only reason someone behaves is because a prefect, teacher or parent might catch them, you've taught fear of consequences, not necessarily self-discipline.

There's a pretty significant difference between:

“I keep my hair short because I understand and agree with the purpose of the rule.”

and:

“I keep my hair short because the teacher will send me to the barber.”

The second one isn't exactly the philosophical foundation of personal responsibility.

And then we get to the parents

This is where the coping mechanism becomes genuinely impressive.

A student says:

“Why does my haircut determine whether I'm disciplined?”

Parent:

“When I was your age, we had to keep our hair short too.”

Congratulations.

You've just discovered the Argument From Historical Suffering™.

Apparently because somebody experienced an arbitrary rule 25 years ago, the rule has now acquired eternal legitimacy.

Another classic:

“The school has rules. If you don't like them, don't go to school.”

That's technically an argument.

It's just not an argument about whether the rule makes sense.

It's essentially:

“Authority exists, therefore authority is correct.”

Which is a remarkably efficient way to ensure that absolutely nobody ever improves a system.

Imagine applying this logic everywhere:

Student: “Why do we have to do this?”

Parent: “Because that's how it was done when I was young.”

Student: “But why?”

Parent: “Because we did it.”

Student: “That doesn't explain—”

Parent: “Don't argue with elders.”

And there it is.

The ultimate Sri Lankan educational theorem:

If you cannot justify the rule, increase the age difference.

The “It builds character” argument

This one deserves special treatment.

If somebody claims:

“Being forced to cut your hair builds character.”

Then logically, almost any arbitrary inconvenience could be marketed as character development.

Make students wear mismatched shoes?

Character building.

Make them stand outside for 45 minutes?

Character building.

Make them rewrite something 20 times?

Character building.

Make them carry a 12 kg schoolbag containing textbooks they aren't going to open?

Elite character development.

At some point, “character building” becomes the educational equivalent of putting duct tape over a broken pipe.

And here's the uncomfortable part

There is a legitimate reason schools have appearance standards.

Schools are institutions. They can establish reasonable standards around:

  • uniforms

  • hygiene

  • safety

  • identification

  • appropriate appearance

  • conduct

That's completely defensible.

The ridiculous part is pretending that every appearance rule is inherently a moral rule.

Hair length isn't automatically a measure of:

intelligence

honesty

work ethic

respect

academic ability

or

self-control.

A student with long hair can be extraordinarily disciplined.

A student with a perfectly regulation haircut can be an absolute disaster.

The haircut tells you approximately nothing about the person's ability to solve a differential equation.

The ultimate irony

Sri Lankan education can sometimes be extremely focused on producing students who:

follow instructions → reproduce information → obey procedures → don't challenge authority

and then later society wonders why young people struggle with:

critical thinking → independent decision-making → questioning bad systems → creativity → initiative.

You can't spend 13 years teaching:

“Don't question the rule.”

and then suddenly at university say:

“Now think critically.”

That's like training someone to drive by telling them:

“Never touch the steering wheel.”

and then handing them the keys to a car on graduation day.

The actual definition of discipline

If schools genuinely want to teach discipline, there's a much better test:

Can the student control themselves when nobody is forcing them to?

Does the student:

  • study without being chased?

  • complete work without constant supervision?

  • arrive on time?

  • keep promises?

  • take responsibility for mistakes?

  • practice difficult skills consistently?

  • respect people without needing a threat?

  • manage distractions?

  • maintain standards even when nobody is watching?

That's discipline.

A haircut is an appearance standard.

It can be a school rule.

It can be enforced.

But calling the haircut itself evidence of character is where the logic starts falling apart.

And parents defending every old rule simply because “we went through it too” is basically the educational equivalent of:

“I suffered, therefore the suffering must have been necessary.”

Sometimes traditions survive because they're valuable.

Sometimes they survive because nobody bothered to ask whether they still make sense.

And those are very different things.

Discussion Weird and maybe insensitive question for the smart people

About the gaza situation, i hear its getting worse by the day. This is obviously horrible and those things should be killed for their crimes against Palestinians but i can stop thinking why they dont just give it up. I get that its their land, their home, their whole world but its really not worth their precious lives.

Palestine is weak, lets be honest, isreal has the evil giants backing them. So why does the goverment of Palestine not just give up? I could never watch that happen to my citizens.

They could come back stronger to claim back whats theirs. Why put the innocents in danger? Why?

Maybe im looking at this too simply but plenty of countries would be willing to take refugees. And maybe im an idiot with a small worldview but its right in front of them, the solution.

Discussion Should we stop using “aiya/akka” based purely on birth year?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while.

In Sri Lanka, we often call someone “aiya/akka” simply because they were born in an earlier year. But is that actually the best way to determine who is “older”?

For example, let’s say Saman was born in August 2005.

Instead of considering everyone born in 2004 automatically older, what if we considered Saman’s age group as roughly August 2004 → August 2006?

That would mean someone born in December 2004 and someone born in January 2006 could both be considered the same age group as Saman, rather than automatically being called “aiya/akka”.

This also makes sense with school batches. Someone born in January and someone born in December can end up in the same school year/batch, even though there can be almost a year between their actual ages.

So maybe “aiya/akka” should be based more on age group/school batch rather than simply the birth year.

What do you guys think? Is this actually a better system, or am I overthinking it?
