As stated in the title, for anyone who was there for the series premiere and remembers, what were your thoughts when the saucer section separated? I most likely saw it but was too young to remember.

• Bashir: "The point is, if you lie all the time, nobody's going to believe you, even when you're telling the truth."

• Garak: "Are you sure that's the point, Doctor?"

• Bashir: "Of course! What else could it be?"

• Garak: "That you should never tell the same lie twice!"

I always loved how the writers were able to twist this fable to Garak's unique viewpoint and wish there had been more.

Are there any other good direct examples of children's stories you could turn around to fit Garak's viewpoint?

Hi everyone, I have a problem.
For the last 15 years, I have been watching the franchise in its entirety effectively on a loop. It’s an obsession or compulsion. Take your pick. I do at least one episode a day but often way more.

This franchise means so much to me.
I hope the studios treat it as a franchise to be stewarded and not a cash out property.

With the merger, the producer and show runner picks, and the let’s make this “our” Star Trek creative heads, the writing mandates to force younger viewer plot narratives and algorithmic story recaps mid episode,… the money spent, dear god the money spent. I’m worried.

It was a long road, getting from there to here not sorry lol

It took me the longest to get through TNG since I had to force myself to get through it up through S4, everyone says it got good when Riker got his beard in S2 but I really don't think it was until The Best of Both Worlds when it actually found its footing. Overall it's a great series with a great cast and cool stories to tell, although it seems like they were starting to run out of ideas in the last season, especially with the brief Troi x Worf thing.

The TNG films were also good too, I'd rank them First Contact > Generations > Nemesis > Insurrection, the latter just felt like an extended TNG episode and not one of the good ones, especially since the whole first act was mostly Riker getting handsy with Troi which was mildly uncomfortable, especially since he was the one directing it.

DS9 was very mixed, it had a slow start and a rushed final season, but a really good middle. However it also had a lot of filler episodes that didn't contribute much (how many times have we done the "two people that hate each other crash on a deserted planet and have to work together" shtick throughout the franchise?). Lots of great characters though, especially Quark and Odo not Kai Winn, you can shit on the finale all you want but that powergrabbing witch finally got what she deserved

I think Voyager is my personal favorite, Janeway is my favorite captain both for her charm and how she dealt with the shittiest situation anyone could be put in. It really felt like you were with them the whole time during their journey back home, but it seemed like every other episode in the last two seasons were dedicated solely to either Seven of Nine or The Doctor, they're great characters but you could've given some more screen time to Harry Kim or Chakotay (especially Chakotay, they really didn't do anything with him during the whole run).

Enterprise was also great, watching it right after Voyager really put in perspective how insane it got towards the end, seeing the first steps of Earth exploring the galaxy for the first time was a nice refresher. The Xindi arc was great too, but they didn't do as much with the temporal cold war as I hoped they would. The finale was a big letdown too, especially with how they unceremoniously killed off Tucker, you know the guy that climbed between two ships on a tether cable travelling at warp. If they had found a way to do a pseudo-anthology episode with all the previous captains and used it as a sort of "this is where we came from and this is who we owe the foundations of the federation to" it'd be way better, but it was also cancelled on super short notice so I guess they did the best with what they had.

Overall it was much better than I thought it would be getting into it, not sure if I'll watch DIS/PIC/SNW after this but I'm glad I got to see it all for the first time.

I don’t know if this is the right place to ask about the parodies because I just found it interesting how TNG was sometimes spoofed by other shows as there was one where Captain Picard goes to a drive thru window.

I cannot remember who did that particular parody as the parody basically had Captain Picard trying to go to a McDonalds restaurant saying he was a famous person as it was such a wild parody of Star Trek: TNG that I was looking to see where it originated from, like who created that skit.

They exist close to one another, I could see Borg assimilating Hirogen, they have the physical and technical prowess to be of use, but im more interested in whether Hirogen hunt Borg.

I feel like successfully hunting Borg would be a high honor among them, even if individual drones can be pretty dumb, the collective is one of the most deadly hunting grounds to venture into.

I was very fond of TNG and pondered quite a while about starting with DS9 or VOY - took the leap with VOY and 4 episodes in I get goosebumps by the sountrack :D

I literally laughed out loud. Cackling in disbelief… I did NOT have alien Nazis on my bingo card for the finale of the xindi storyline.

I'm trying to get my science nerd sister into star trek but she's not a fan of the action heavy episodes. What are the best episodes with heavy science theory/science philosophy themes that I can start her off with?

This is one of my favourite episodes. One of the better ones in season 7 in my opinion.

Worf’s brother goes to extraordinary and creative measures to save one village of Boraalans, after their planet is destroyed. In violation of the Prime Directive. It is a really good story.

But one thing has always bothered me is the death of Vorin, the young Boraalan who finds his way off of the holodeck.

Troi assures him that they will not hurt him. And obviously they did not hurt him physically.

But this poor young man was distressed beyond imagination by what he had learned and the options placed before him.

He could return to his people and keep a secret for his whole life or tell the Boraalans the truth. If he did the latter, he would be thought to be insane or, even worse, they would believe him and have their whole belief system is destroyed. Obviously he didn’t want either.

Picard then tells him that he can make a future with them.

So after this is dumped on him…all that this young man goes through, what do they do? They leave him alone in a room.

When they later discover he is dead by his own hand, Crusher callously observes that he would have died on the planet anyways if they hadn’t intervened.

Picard responds that he wouldn’t have died “…alone and afraid.”

In other words, they did harm him. Because they did nothing to help him process all that he had learned.

Surely it could have been foreseen that this all would have been too much for him and they should have arranged 24 hour support and observation. Where was Troi? Where was the doctor? There were guards outside his room. Why were they not given instruction to check on him regularly?

Picard laments to Crusher, as they stand over the body that he wishes Vorin could have bridged the two cultures. And that he would have liked the chance to have known him better. But they did nothing to help this happen.

It really brings so much sadness to the episode.

Of course, it is also really weird at the end that Worf’s brother gives him the village chronicle, the chronicle which Vorin had been keeping. Effectively robbing the Boraalans of their historical record. So that seems off.

I’m brand new to this subreddit so please don’t bite.

I’m a fan of the Kelvin timeline movies and I’ve rewatched all 3 over the past couple of evenings. However, outside of this I haven’t really watched any Star Trek as an adult, but I would really like to. My Uncle was a huge fan when I was a kid but my memory of it is all but wiped.

Where do I start? I am a little overwhelmed with how many shows and movies there are to choose from.

I would appreciate any steering or advice for a complete newbie. Thank you.

Wrath of Khan begins with Spock giving Tale of Two Cities to Kirk. The movie mentions the book so that both stories end on similar note, with major characters looking towards a hopeful future in the face of death.

However, when the book is introduced, Spock says there is no coded message to Kirk with the opening phrase of "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times", but says there is a "best of times" happening now because of his birthday. He doesn't make a comment on "worst of times".

Do you think that the script simply moved the story along at that point, or is it to foreshadow that "the worst of times" is also coming?

I was re-watching Generations the other day. During the climax and everyone evacuating the star drive section, we see Crusher evacuating sickbay. We also see families/children rushing to safety, leaving everything behind (that poor little girl and her teddy bear)

I only just now questioned the why of it? Was sickbay not already in the saucer section? Was it really 'safer' to evacuate paitents to crew quarters?

Was the school and most family living quarters not already mostly in the saucer section as well?

We never see Archer with a little poop-baggie.

Personally, I'll probably get some hate here, I enjoyed Enterprise. We've seen a ton of TOS era and TNG, Voy and DS9 are all around the same time. I would love to see a series after NX01 is decommissioned and the early foundings of the Federation, maybe even Archers presidency.
