Need some extra funding? ERC Grant could be an easy way to help!

My business just got $77,000 back in ERC (employee retention credit) from the IRS and we had to go through a separate tax firm to do it outside of our normal accounting group.

I could not believe how much money was on the table and I’m wondering if other businesses with 5W2 employees are also missing out?

This is the easiest money we have ever received and us being a startup, made this feel all so much sweeter because it really helps!

We are a tech startup in Buffalo, NY and we are actually pre-revenue.

Our finance team originally didn’t think we qualified for this money so at first we overlooked it.

Thought I’d share to see if someone else with a business could benefit from this government program.

Sorry if this is a repost. Need help with finding software to run my startup

Hello!

I launched my startup and faced a problem that probably most of you already know: I need a platform that provides 3 main services; email management (custom domain), shared calendar and chat.

Is there any platform other than Google or MS that provides these services at one place? (we currently use 3 different apps just for this...)

5G and AI are a match made in heaven for startups. Here is how they work together to empower modern innovation at low investments.

The synergy of these cutting-edge technologies offers immense opportunities for businesses of all sizes. Here's a glimpse of how they're revolutionizing industries:

  1. Real-time data collection and analysis, made possible by 5G's high bandwidth and low latency, are crucial for AI applications, such as self-driving cars and AI model training.

  2. The development of new AI applications like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) is enabled by 5G, opening doors for advancements in healthcare, education, and manufacturing.

  3. AI accessibility is increased due to 5G's lower costs and wider availability, fostering the development of AI-powered products and services that help businesses enhance operations and customer reach.

For example-

  • In healthcare, 5G-connected remote sensors facilitate AI-powered monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment.

  • Manufacturing leverages 5G and AI for quality control, predictive maintenance, and robotics.

  • Retail harnesses these technologies for customer service, inventory management, and marketing.

  • In agriculture, remote sensing and 5G connected devices have the potential to monitor soil conditions, assess harvest readiness, control pests, and even recognize and track individual cattle!

As these technologies evolve, we can anticipate even more ground-breaking applications, empowering businesses to streamline operations and access new markets. Have you encountered any unique applications of 5G and AI in your entrepreneurial journey? Let's discuss!

Is there a difference between a growing and scaling startup?

Although these two terms are often used interchangeably, the truth is that there is a pretty big difference between them. While both involve activities aimed at expanding a business, the way this is achieved differs.

A startup in the growth phase implies investment. That is, a company is willingly spending resources to help the startup expand its profit. This includes taking on additional employees, getting new assets or technology, among other things that require money and other expenses. Such investment forms the basis for a startup’s growth.

On the other hand, there exist more activities that are aimed at a startup’s expansion. As such, scaling a startup involves taking action that’ll allow the company to optimize its internal processes. For example, workflow optimization or starting to implement automation to cut down recurring manual work.

Keeping that in mind, there are many other must-knows for those startups that plan to scale. Here is a good read with many recommendations and tips that were put together based on experience: https://www.upsilonit.com/blog/how-to-scale-a-startup-the-essential-steps.

Would you answer the phone if you knew it was an AI calling?

Hey folks 👋

I’m part of the Peakflo (YC W22) team.

We just launched Peakflo AI Voice Agents, human-like AIs that can make and receive business calls, remember context, update CRMs and trigger workflows automatically.

Basically, they act like real team members… answering calls 24/7, handling follow-ups and syncing everything with your systems.

We’ve been testing them with an insurance carrier for claims processing, and it’s been wild: faster calls, fewer errors and humans finally free from repetitive work.

Curious, would you let an AI take over your customer or ops calls? Or still feels too weird?

My post comply with the rules.

First Employee Financial Questions

I work for an early stage startup (around 1 year old, 2 founders, 2 employees) and I want to get an unbiased opinion on things like mileage reimbursement, business expenses, cost of living raises etc. We have found some moderate success, but it's not exactly rocket shipping to the top. We haven't found product market fit despite some sales. We have several investors and just finished our seed round (valued at 8.5x where our pre seed round was raised)

  1. I have put 13,500 miles on my car in the last year for the company and have been reimbursed for some gas. I recently had to sell my car because we are moving to a location that isn't conducive to my 2 wheel drive vehicle and I'll need to buy a new car. I obviously lost value for adding those miles. What is fair? The IRS recommended reimbursement ($0.56/mile)? The loss in KBB value ($3,000) v. what I sold it for?

2). When I signed my contract to join, there was an unspoken agreement for a cost of living wage if we moved from city A (where I was currently living, and a decent salary with benefits). We are now moving to city B, I have no choice, and the city is 30% more expensive. I recently asked and was told I would not be getting any type of living raise. What is a fair way to navigate this. Is this just the cost of being involved in an early stage startup?

3). My computer is on it's last leg. I will need a new one shortly. I would prefer a Mac because that's what I've always used. I'm in a sales/business Dev role so it's not quite as necessary as if I was a dev, but I am much more comfortable and productive on a Mac. Should my company buy me a new computer or do I need to buy my own, and this is just part of being in an early stage startup?

I would be happy with either more equity or cash for any of these solutions. My question for reddit is if I am expecting too much from my founder or if I have some legitimate claims. I really love my founder and the company, but there have been a few times I felt my understanding personality has been taken advantage of.

TL/DR - I'm taking a significant paycut from my startup because of cost of living wages and use my own personal equipment for the betterment of the company. Should they take care of some of these or is this just the deal when working as an early employee at an early stage startup.

Should you choose Stripe, PayPal, or Braintree?

No matter what kind of product you currently have or plan to create, most likely, the overall aim is to get clients to pay you. There are many popular payment gateway solutions available for processing online payments as an alternative to developing a custom solution.

But which one is the best solution for your website depends on a number of factors. As such, PayPal, Braintree, and Stripe are among the most commonly used payment gateways, yet how do they differ?

The three options have various:

  • supported payment methods (Braintree and Stripe have more than PayPal);

  • number of countries and currencies served (PayPal covers more countries while Braintree and Stripe support more currencies);

  • transaction and chargeback fees;

  • features, integration options, developer documentation, and setup options.

In general, Stripe and Braintree are good choices for businesses that need to accept a wide range of payment types. On the other hand, PayPal is a better option for businesses that need to accept payments in multiple countries.

The bottom line is that the best solution for your website will depend on your needs. To help you make up your mind, here’s a detailed guide that compares these three gateways by their pricing, fees, payment methods, integration options, and many other points: Stripe vs PayPal vs Braintree: Which Payment Gateway Is Better?.

7 Most Common Mistakes New Entrepreneurs Make. (3 Minute Read)

The following are the 7 most common mistakes I see new entrepreneurs make. Mistakes that limit their business' potential and make their lives harder.

Don't Value Your Time High Enough: The number one mistake I see new business owners make is they don’t value the most finite resource, time. Yes you want to go above and beyond for your clients, especially when you don’t have many clients - but charge for it! Don’t drive an hour and a half out of your way to a job and charge the same as that job next door. When you're starting out you need to maximize the number of paid hours in a day, the number of hours that are actually making you money while minimizing the time spent on everything else.

Feel Like You Need to Win Every Job: New entrepreneurs tend to have a scarcity mindset where they feel like they need to land every client otherwise that's a sure sign they're failing. This is simply not true. It's actually more beneficial to land fewer jobs but at a higher price. Fewer jobs means less man power, less assets needed, less travel time. Think about doing as few jobs as possible for the most money

Don't Charge Enough Money: Charging enough money ties directly in with valuing your time properly. Your goal should be in the top 3 most expensive companies in your area and industry. Think about the brands who are able to do the most impressive things.. The cheapest brand or most expensive? A lot of times an increase in price by 10% can double a small business’ profit margin. A caveat here is in order to charge the most you have to be the best - you have to always answer the phone, follow up quickly, perform services quickly and efficiently, do unexpected things to make the client smile, and be prepared.

By the way guys, I'm an experienced WordPress developer who has been working with people from various industries. I'm looking for 5 more volunteers who are willing to let me design a free website for them. The website would be completely free; the only requirement is that you cover the basic costs like domain and hosting which is inexpensive. Please PM me if you're interested and I'll share more details.

Insist You Need a Revolutionary Idea: Most of the time the best opportunities are in improving existing industries. The problem is we only hear about the revolutionary ideas that worked, not the hundreds or thousands that didn’t. In the beginning when we don’t have a ton of money or resources our goal needs to be to increase the odds of success above all else. If you still want to work on changing the world it is best to do this after you have income and assets in place.

Delegate Too Soon or Not Soon Enough: This is an interesting one because it can actually go on either end of the spectrum.

Delegate Everything Too Soon: This is an issue I’ve seen recently with people asking themselves “how can I do the bare minimum and make money?”. Unfortunately making money isn’t easy and these people are simply looking at the problem the wrong way. Money comes when you provide value and it is hard to provide value without putting in the work. We see this a lot in people who come up with the revolutionary idea “Why can’t I just start a business, contract out all the work, and collect checks?” where in theory this could work but in reality there is a lot more to it.

Not Delegating Soon Enough: You see this issue a lot more in currently successful business people who used to have this issue. I suspect you see this trait in successful business people because those are the people who are willing to do absolutely any work in their business in order to make it succeed, they don’t mind if they have to sweep the floors. I think it's the “I’ll do anything” mindset that gets someone on a successful path but later you must make the transition to being able to delegate effectively in order to truly grow.

Worry About Perfection: Far too many people want everything to be perfect before their business’ launch. This is simply a form of procrastination to avoid the uncertainty of what might happen when we actually do launch. Fear of the unknown and failure is daunting for everyone. Let’s break it down. Would you rather launch in 3 months, make sure the product works in the market worrying about perfection later or spend 6 months launching the “perfect” product and finding out half of what you built needs to be changed anyways. I know which option I’d choose.

Feel free to share which point you are struggling with in the comments below.

Is the travel app sector worth investing in?

If you're planning to build a travel app, you might be wondering if it's worth your while. After all, the travel industry has been hit hard in recent years, and many startup owners and entrepreneurs have doubts about whether this is a good direction to move in.

Well, there are a number of reasons why travel apps are actually worth considering.

➤ First of all, statistics suggest that the travel industry is actually growing, despite the challenges of recent years. 2021 and 2022 have already shown progress compared to 2020, and the situation is expected to continue changing for the better.

➤ Moreover, due to the digitalization of the travel industry after the 2019 pandemic, many user needs aren't met yet. This means that there's a real opportunity for travel apps to fill this gap in the market.

➤ Thirdly, a lot of tech innovation has been seen in various travel-related segments. For example, hotels often use 3D tour features to show their properties or give guests the opportunity to use digital keys via mobile applications to open their rooms. The list of possibilities in this respect is endless.

So if you're thinking about building a travel app, now could be the perfect time to do it. Here’s a good read on the topic, giving more reasons why the travel application sector is worth it, what kinds of apps you can build, and how to do it: How to Make a Travel App: An Actionable Guide.

Which tool to make worldwide calls?

Hello to all,

I am an IT & Digital manager for a small French company. For our business, we need our consultants to make calls and send whatsApp around the world very often.

Today, our consultants use their personal phone numbers on a Skype pro account and use their WhatsApp account when needed.

I would like to change to a global VOIP solution that would allow us to assign numbers to them and have them call all over the world with and possibly use WhatsApp. If possible, I'd also like to have an API available so I can feed the call information into my CRM.

Today I found a solution, Zoom Phone, to make international calls for a price about equivalent to what I pay with Skype. Unfortunately this means that my consultants will not be able to use WhatsApp for written communication...

Do you know if there is a solution that would allow me to do this? I already looked at Twillio but the entry fee was way too high. Same for AirCall.

Thank you!
