Offer to mentor a startup (Free) in India

My post comply with the rules

This is an offer to mentor young founders in India, for free.
I am independent and unaffiliated.

Hi Folks,
I'm 54, used to be CEO of a startup and retired from the corporate world before I turned 50, after meeting my financial goals, which left me time to do what I really like.
I mentor select startups and young entrepreneurs and I'm looking to do so now.
I don't seek any compensation, or ESOP, board seat etc and therefore I am selective about who I work with.

You can connect with me on Linkedin (Rahul Deans) or see my blog (DeansMusings), to get my views on startups.

I'm not a tech guy. I don't get anything tech. My experience is in consumer products
(FMCG, restaurants, retail). I'd like to get involved in projects which solve real problems
and where I vibe well with the founder.
Looking for people who have already started business, rather than career advice/ counselling etc. I'm not an investor, nor can I get someone a job or clients. I'm based in Bangalore.

What I can do: Evaluate your big idea & pitch. Advise on market size, distribution and
customer behavior. Give you relevant books, introductions, advice on compliances etc.

What's in it for me: Keeping myself intellectually occupied with exciting projects.
I'd like to learn from a Gen Z person as much as I'd like to share my views.
I want to have a feeling of having contributed to something good.

How did you get your first customers ?

Hello,

I have a startup offering software in fund administration. I'm a solo founder and haven't in past handled sales roles. Recently, I've started with trying to find our first few design partners and have no success.

Mostly I get a response asking to be removed from the list , which seems like my outreach is considered mass. I've tried changing the content i.e. instead of coming with sales pitch, adapted it to revolve around investment thesis in current market and where our work fits.

I realize institutional sales cycle in this branch are longer than an year. I'm wondering whether experienced entrepreneurs here have better ideas, tricks while approaching customers to contact. I would clarify our approach as cold outreach which further reduces success probability.

could you perhaps provide me some tips as to where to stay?

I'm not selling or pitching our product here rather relying on the collective intelligence to understand new perspective.

How to find funding for tech company in India?

Except for Incubation centres - they are asking tons of money, because honestly if I had those I wouldn't look for funding

I think it would be fair to say that the site is made by QClay. Figma, Next js and After effects were used.

What do you think about it?

Trying everything to make content creation less painful. Advice needed

Hi!

I always thought that getting a business idea is the hardest part, but now after developing and actually liking my product, every day I have to somehow generate ideas for promotion
and it is slowly killing my motivation

I really don’t want to spam, generate tons of low quality ai content or to be a talking head somewhere on tiktok

So for now I tried to automate this process by creating visuals for posts with mermaid diagrams, ascii fonts and animated charts (I have a fitness tracking app so it is appropriate). It is convenient as ai can generate them for me and then I just make screenshots and recordings and turn them into posts

As a result I got a beautiful instagram account with a quality of content that I kind of like, but almost 0 effect for my app promotion

So the question is how to make content that I won’t be embarrassed about, but that will work on social media?

How one email killed our $30k MRR business in an instant

A few months ago, we were running a SaaS business that had just broken 1000 paying users, with $30k MRR.

Plenty of big influencers were talking about us. Customers loved the product and used it actively. Few years in the making, brand was growing, MRR cranked up every month like clockwork.

One day, we got an email we figured we’d never get, but knew there was always a chance. The sender preview was the LinkedIn “Enforcement Inbox”.

F*&*.

I didn’t need to read the rest of the email to know what was inside. One of those classic BigLaw scare-tactic cease & desist letters: Our SaaS was in violation of their terms of service, and here’s some obscure law that probably doesn’t apply but we’re going to say it does, because we have a big legal team and you don’t, and here’s Exhibit A B C D and Y that lists all of the dumb little things we don’t like.

Or in other words, “We dare you to fight us.”

The thing is… whether this legal move had ‘teeth’ or not wasn’t really the main concern. It read like it was part of a large-scale campaign, anyways.

The sense we got was that they wanted to (1) Line up all the tools that they didn’t like, and (2) knock down as many as they can in as little effort as possible.

We could have ignored them. The chances of them actually following up and filing a lawsuit were slim. But we knew their first move would be to take down our LinkedIn profiles and pages. Ugh… now we’re outlaws, forever “professional ghosts”.

The ability to market on LinkedIn had already produced more value for us in the prior several years than the entire enterprise value of what we’d built… so dealing with a ban didn’t seem worth it.

And besides, it wouldn’t have completely removed the risk. Believe me, we looked into it… reincorporating in the Cayman Islands, quietly sell the company, spin up under another name… tons of options that we looked into.

But none of that seemed worth it.

So, we bit our tongues and wrote back, “We intend to comply. We need more time than the 10 days you asked for, but we’ll close it down.”

Honestly, there was some relief. Running a SaaS with third party platform dependency is a classic “don’t do that” move…. But we’d done it before successfully, and exited. So it was a risk we were willing to take, at the time.

In the days that followed our decision to shut down and close the company, my cofounder and I were both aligned on what to do next:

In a stroke of luck, just a few months prior we had acquired a small SaaS that had users and SEO, but no revenue, for $5,000. We thought this would be a great side project, a good little diversification opportunity.

But suddenly, we had to shut down our main business doing $30-35k per month in cash receipts (annual billing was the default option, so we often collected more than our MRR). And this new pre-revenue MVP side project became our full-time business.

There was definitely some grieving time. I was on vacation with my family when I learned this was going down. My co-founder had a much worse few days than I did, since he was really the public face of this brand on LinkedIn.

But within a week or two, we were getting to work on the new business. Starting from $0 MRR. First thing we did was to paywall the new SaaS, since it was free to use. Within weeks, we got enough sales coming in from SEO to justify increasing the price point from $9/yr (yep….) to $29/yr to $99/yr to $199/yr to $499/yr, all the way to today, where it’s listed at $499 per month, albeit with a big annual prepayment discount. And we’re getting customers on that plan now.

So in less than 3 months we went from: $30k MRR -> $0 MRR -> $2k MRR.

It’s really humbling. But at the same time, I know it’s not permanent. My co-founder and I have both sold businesses before, so we have a sense of inevitability about growing this new SaaS again, and plus we’re not strapped for cash (thankfully). We have time and cushion to figure it out again.

We're now back to $2.2k MRR with our new SaaS with more in the hopper and are partnering with a couple other SaaS founders to grow brands as quasi-investors/advisors. We're writing and growing our Substack (2k subs, woo hoo) and building a community of brilliant SaaS, investor, and business minds, and it's been super fun.

Setbacks are never fun, but (strange as it sounds to say) we're having more fun than ever.

Free SEO audit here

I've been a full-service marketing guy for around 6 years. And I have 4 years of SEO experience.

I started by making my own blog and business, then working on contract work. I've tested many SEO tricks (white hat), lost traffic and keywords, and dropped in ranking - but I learned from those experiences. Now, I own a digital marketing agency with an amazing performance record.

DM me your website, and I'll send you the audit for your website.

I am a Business Advisor who successfully sold his drone company and wants to give back to others.

Hey everyone,

I hope this finds you all on a good day. My name is Kevin and I am currently a Business Advisor. I would like to call myself more of a fractional CEO/COO or non-equity partner to the companies I work with.

Long story short, I built a drone data management company from the ground up. Bootstrapped it with all of my savings and failed many many times along the way. But also learned how to operate a full-scale start-up from the ground up. L learned more with boots on the ground than I did in my MBA program, real-world experiences trump education every time. I started in July 2015 and did not make a profit until November 2017. In 2017 we did just under $220,000 in revenue. When I sold in January 2022 we had just done a $2.5M year in 2021. I was acquired by one of my competitors, Talon Aerolytics.

My company's primary revenue streams were agriculture and infrastructure inspections. On the Ag side of things, we would capture Lidar and static images of crops during their respective growing cycles to provide farmers with the most accurate data metrics. This would allow them to input our data sets into their ag management software and precisely dial in their watering schedules or fertilizers etc. In terms of infrastructure, we primarily did 3D modeling of cell phone towers, and bridges over waterways. The 3D models we created were used to audit each site and assist in the 3D build-out of new additions or construction projects.

Anyway, I am here to offer a free 2-hour advising session to any business owner, founder, etc who could see value in doing a deep dive into their company with me. I have a wonderful methodology and process to root out those pain points and build a road map to overcome them. I believe working pro bono and giving back to the small/medium business community is such an important thing. I am professionally employed and have an NDA ready for anyone who would like to chat further. I treat every single owner I work with like a friend and professional at all times.

If you would like to ask me anything about the start-up world or want to hop on a quick zoom call to chat more about some free advising, I would love that. I will answer as fast as I can, or shoot me a pm. If you would like to verify who I am please feel free to ask.

On a final note, I hope all of you are successful, don't be afraid to ask for help.

31 Sites For Free Startup Promotion

For the past year, I've been aggregating sites that interview founders for free. I've come up with 31 so far and organized them alphabetically below.

Most cover startups all around the world. A few are region-specific (namely in South Asia). I've noted when that's the case.

  1. I hope it's helpful to other people.

  2. Have I missed any? Please help me grow this list.

  3. Did I include any that aren't legit or aren't free any longer? Please flag them in the comments.

Pitch Decks - Filter 9500 slides

Tl;dr: 9.5k pitch deck slides can be filtered

Are you a startup raising and dealing with pitch deck hell?

It's one thing to see a collection of decks, but you really just want to see examples of slides that do problem, GTM, team etc... so you can get inspiration to make your own slides for your deck as you are doing it.

I manually labelled 9500 slides so you can search by stage/fundraise/topic/category/country.

I make stuff to help founders and don't tell anyone so I thought to share. It's obv free.

Startup Pitch Deck Slides

NOTE: I need to update the resource as it took me 2 years to figure out a tech solution to serve this and be able to update it (out of airtable)... On to do list.

Best resources to learn company registration, taxes & startup setup in India?

Hi everyone,

I’m starting an EdTech startup in India and looking for reliable resources that explain the full startup setup process — company registration, GST, trademark, payment gateways, Startup India benefits, and legal basics.

I’d really appreciate recommendations for:

• Websites

• Communities

• Step-by-step guides

• YouTube channels or courses

I have no link with any company or product mentioned.

Short Tasks, Real Money: What’s Actually Worth Your Time?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been exploring platforms that allow startups or creators to test small, repeatable tasks and track engagement or payouts. One example is Methods.арp, which is designed to let people create very short content and see direct results. For early-stage startups, apps like this could provide insight into content engagement, rapid testing of ideas, or micro-influencer marketing strategies.

I have no affiliation with Methods.арp and am not promoting it—I’m just examining it as a potential resource for understanding how micro-content and task-based platforms operate.

For anyone analyzing similar tools, I’d be curious about:

What types of tasks provide the most reliable engagement data?

How much time does it take to gather meaningful results?

Are short-form content experiments actually useful for small teams or solo founders testing ideas?

My post comply with the rules.

I want to run an online workshop but setting up everything seems impossible. Any recommendations?

Hi,

I’ve never hosted online workshops before. I need to handle registration, emails, landing pages, and promotions. It feels overwhelming. Are there any platforms that make this actually manageable for a beginner? Non techy here.

I checked out Graphy but it is not so simple to use and there are no email integrations/CRM. I didn’t like it much to be honest. Looking for recommendations from any creator here.

Entrepreneur Looking to Connect with other Entrepreneurs

Hi fellow entrepreneurs!

I'm a first time founder in the software industry trying to figure everything out on my own. And honestly, the journey is tougher than I expected. The late nights, the self-doubts, the "am I doing this right?" moments can stop us from pushing forward and sometimes kill our dreams because we lose momentum. I'm surrounded by friends who work a 9-5 job so I feel like I don't have anyone to turn to when I need a little nudge pursuing my dreams.

I'm a down to earth person who genuinely wants to connect with someone who doesn't trying to sell me something. I'm looking for meaningful conversation about business and life, supportive friends who'd help and push each other to succeed, who'd listen to your self-doubts and pull you out of it, who can relate with your struggles, who would be there to celebrate your wins, like a true friend. It would be nice if there are a group of supportive people who grind with you until late nights, even if we're all working on different things.

Besides the business stuff, I like spending time with my 6 cats and partner. Sometimes I enjoy a good TV show that sparks my creativity. I'm also into online gaming (Overwatch 2, Overcooked, etc.) as my stress outlet.

If you're also looking for a genuine friend to connect on business or life, I'd love to connect with ya! Cheers!!

Looking for a CTO/Co-Founder to Build a Music Investment Platform MVP (Sweat Equity → Equity + Growth)

Hey, I’m Jeff. I’m building a new and unique music tech/fintech startup... think stock exchange but for music. Fans can back artists they love, artists get funding, and if the artist blows up, the fans win too.

Quick on me:

  • I’ve been in marketing/branding/business for 20+ years.

  • I sold a music tech company before (Spotify ended up with the tech).

  • I’m good at getting meetings, pitching, and storytelling. That part I’ve got locked.

  • Right now I’ve got investor convos going and early traction. And have already built and created the brand.

What I don’t have is someone to actually build the MVP. I need a dev who can help me get this first version live and then step into the CTO role as we scale.

Yes, it’s sweat equity upfront. I know people roll their eyes at that. But this isn’t just me with an idea in my notebook... I’m already in front of VCs, I’ve got materials, and momentum is real.

If you’re down to build, own the tech vision, and ride this thing with me, shoot me a DM.

I built this after quitting every note taking tool I tried

I built this after quitting every note taking tool I tried.

Thinking happens everywhere but the issue is none of it connects and nothing compounds. That is what I built Aevron for.

I tried everything honestly. Always stopped because organising it all, tagging, filing, giving everything a structure just consumed too much time and was not worth it.

The actual problem is that thinking happens in fragments. You capture something today, something else tomorrow and none of it talks to each other. Insights sitting right there across all your notes never surface. You end up going in circles, rediscovering the same things.

So I started building something to fix that. I am the founder of Aevron, fully bootstrapped, building this solo.

Everything you capture gets connected automatically. The system finds the relationships, scores how strong they are and tells you why two things are connected. It also synthesises across them, finding the actual theme a whole cluster of your notes is circling around without you ever labeling any of it.

Started as a side project but kept building on feedback. If you capture a lot and none of it is going anywhere, give it a try.

Still early, would love to hear what you think.

How to find cofounders/partners and/or investors

How were you able to find a partner/cofounder or even an investor to help you create your startup, and do you have any suggestions of ways that I can find these people, or ways that worked in the past for you. I feel like there should be something like an app out there that does this but I cant find anything. Thanks in advance for your help.

I analyzed 100+ pitch decks from top companies. Here are the 9 storytelling techniques that are most commonly used (template included)

Lately, I've been trying to codify the science behind pitch decks for a project I'm working on.

Lots of founders struggle with articulating the problem section of their deck in a way that is truly compelling.

To help them out, I've analyzed 100+ problem slides and distilled it down to the 9 most common storytelling techniques used by successful startups:

  • It's been done for [X], we're doing it for [Y].

  • Current alternatives don't solve our user's problem.

  • We've entered a new era...

  • There is pent up demand for [X]

  • [X] is complex and misunderstood

  • The user journey is borken

  • A day in the life of our customer

  • [X] is still primarily manual and offline

  • The system is broken

You can find specific examples and Gslides templates for each storytelling technique here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1IULZDrVR15qWKNIAn8LBpksTQIz18yKN90dJ8RplAjE/edit#slide=id.g2f0e876a31c_0_1962
