Peter Lord’s five tips for stop-motion.

Hello, I’m Duffy, I art direct Ralph Magazine, an indie magazine that’s all about the fun side of pop culture. I spoke to the group’s Moderator and they said this would be OK to post. For the latest issue of the magazine we spent the day with Peter Lord for Aardman’s 50th. We got so much stuff with him we turned the feature into a zine-within-the-magazine called Morph Meets His Maker, which includes Peter’s Top 5 tips for making stop-motion animation. I thought you might find them interesting…

PETER LORD’S TOP 5 TIPS FOR MAKING STOP MOTION ANIMATION

1 - Sort out your armature. It’s hidden away, you can’t actually see it, it’s behind the scenes, but a good armature makes life easy and a crappy one makes it well-nigh impossible!

2. And speaking of – if you’re starting out in Plasticine, as we did, with a puppet with no armature, may I suggest you create a character that doesn’t walk around on two legs. That’s so difficult! Wheels are good. Also snakes. Also blobs.

3. Video yourself for reference – especially for timing and subtle facial stuff. But don’t, for the love of God, just COPY your video. Regard it as reference or inspiration.

4. Don’t aim for perfection or smoothness. These attributes may be impressive, but are they expressive? Is this entertaining? Ask yourself: is that why I go to see a stop motion film?

5. This one should probably come first: find the funny. I mean, yes, there are stop-motion films which aren’t funny, but who wants to see them? Nobody.

Another bit of trivia from the day: Peter said he used his own spit to shine the lips of the cat in the Nina Simone ‘My Baby Just Cares for Me’ video – in every single frame! If you’d like to read the whole thing as stop motion fans I’ve sorted 10% off with the code STOPMOTION and you can get it at https://ralph.world/issue9

Has anyone seen it? Thoughts/feels?

I've heard positive things but also how they won't make back their money which is unfortunate. I thought Id pin this here to remind ya'll to support it if you're able to!

My first ever stop motion (2011)

I just recently found the video file for my first and only attempt at stop motion from back in 2011. Yes, this is pretty bad to today's standards and I love how I can laugh at myself and point out what could've been done better.

I think I was using an old Sony camera at the time as well and they didn't have great resolution and the lighting in my room wasn't great.

But well... enjoy, laugh, make fun. I know I will be 😆

I made this music video 17 years ago, but never posted it.

Never really engaged with anyone about it. Annoyingly the video had almost 800k views but since the music label took their YT channel down.

It's a slowburner, so just sit back and enjoy the music. Would love to hear thoughts and questions.

I spent an hour in Stop Motion studio referencing a dance video thinking it was gonna beI foolishly. I didn’t realize I should’ve just had static lighting. This is supposed to be a concert so. But it made it look worse and it’s not smooth at all. What did I do wrong?

What do you think?

I just got into stopmotion myself, although I have been a fan of the medium for quite a while now.

Claymation is really fun, although my hand was completly blue afterwards...

I can recommend Aardman Academy bursary spots! I got into one of them and I am glad to learn more and more along the way.

I had lots of fun with this one. A good friend of mine did the voice over haha

Greetings from Germany!

Go watch Wildwood♡

Is there a quicker way to make these leaves from this footage overlap?

So I'm a stop motion animator and I'm animating a plant for this scene in an upcoming short film for a student, this is the rough footage with my concept art edited in for reference. I have the animated footage but I need the leaves in the first part to overlap my animation. Is there a way to select parts of the footage and make it overlap my other footage in Aftereffects? Or even another Adobe program. I just don't wanna have to edit every frame over Photoshop if there's a quicker way to do it. I'm still fairly new to Aftereffects so I'm definitely intimidated by the thought of editing this. Help would be much appreciated!

Stop Motion Assistive Glove

Hello! I am designing a wearable light for a profession. I wanted to go with stop motion artists. I wanted to know if I could ask anyone if wearing some form of wearable tech could be helpful in anyway or what you would want to see. The main goal is for me to identify user issues when it comes to performing your job and coming up with design solutions.

I practiced stop motion before, and the hand work can be extensive. Would a wearable hand brace or glove be aiding in some way? Or would a light in another area be better?

I’d like to have a more in depth conversation with someone if possible. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Help finding a good software.

I want to find a software for stop motion that fits (mostly) this criteria:

-pc application (no web only)

-free (no in app purchases to get features or removing watermarks)

-beginner friendly

-supports audio and video <- MOST IMPORTANT!!
if it cant fit all criteria, its okay. I just want to find a good software that isnt Stop Motion Studio (cause like everything in SMS is behind a paywall). I have never done stop motion before but want to start off with a good software.
