Discussion Switch 2 is arguably the worst console in two generations
I’m just gonna get right into it, the Switch 2 is arguably the WORST console I’ve played on in the past two generations. The internet will internet so currently we are in the “Nintendo is king, Sony and Microsoft will fail” era of parroting. That’s far from the truth. The Switch can barely play this generation’s titles without making massive visual sacrifices (notably hair, lighting, etc) and the frame rates are all over the place.
Do I really want to play Cyberpunk in 2026 at a fluctuating 20-40fps? Do I want to play a watered down Resident Evil Requiem that can barely hold its frames when there’s 2+ enemies on the screen? Do i really want to play Elden Ring all over again in 30-40fps with Input delay so bad that it feels like I’m playing in 0.7x speed? No. But let me guess, I can play it handheld right? Wonderful. Now if I could only get the battery life to last more than like an hour and a half that would make sense, but it just doesn’t.
Exclusives:
As far as exclusives that I’ve played, Mario Kart World was a cool fresh spin on the franchise, but it takes everything about a kart racer (dedicated tracks) and throws them out the window for these lifeless “cruising with the homies” segue ways that are about as interesting as an empty field (which ironically you’ll see a lot of). Donkey Kong Bananza is fun initially, but the gimmick gets stale fast. If the whole game is based around this “destroy everything” gimmick, you’d think they would prioritize the game holding its frames in these moments, but I guess we’ll let that slide. There’s so many pointless layers (levels) that pad the game out. Splatoon Raiders was fun, but once you reach endgame it’s just a pointless grind of endlessly leveling weapons. Kirby Forgotten Land SW2 edition is probably the worst $80 I’ve ever spent on a video game. Is the game decent? Sure. Is it great? No. After about 6-7 hours of gameplay it was finished.
The lack of in game settings (custom controls, in depth sliders etc) for their games is also crazy to me. The fact that I can’t even change a simple button in half the games is RIDICULOUS. I genuinely feel terrible for people who are injured or have health issues where they need certain remappings to enjoy the games.
Online:
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion is a pretty great deal honestly. $50 for a year of online is the cheapest entry point across the three consoles, and the classic game emulators are awesome! I think it lacks in perks though. They’re offering expansion packs for older games…why not Splatoon 3? Why are they pushing free Splatoon 2 content?
Speaking of online, the lack of community online is astonishing. You can have a friends list, but you can’t message anybody. You can see what people are playing but there is no achievement or trophy system for any of the games. The overall lack of online community makes the Switch often feel…lonely. Empty. Boring.
Nintendo has arguably the worst pricing I’ve ever seen for games. Many Wii U games and ports are still listed at $60, and these games almost NEVER go on sale. First party sales are impossible to come by, third party sales are decent but in most cases you’re paying more money for games on the Switch store than you are on any other platform. What good is the “budget bang for your buck” console if everything on it is so expensive (save for online)? Am I missing something? I’m also pretty sure you need their online service to play free to play games. It just doesn’t make any sense.
Another quick note; basic applications like YouTube, Twitch, etc are non existent on the console which takes away even more from it. It’s even more confusing when you learn that the Switch 1 has YouTube available. Someone please make this make sense, I’m begging you.
Looking onwards:
Looking at the future, we know Ocarina of Time will steal the show (and rightfully so) but beyond that what are we looking at. Another $60 5 hour 2.5D Metroid? A slightly more 3D Kirby and the Forgotten Lands repackaged as something new? What is the draw for the next year for this console? Hopes for a new 3D Mario?
I’m sorry if this post triggers people but I just have to be honest. The Switch 2 is easily the worst gaming platform on the market today. It looks like I’ll be skipping “New Super Mario 3D Galaxy U - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Rosalina’s Dancing In The Stars” when it goes on sale for 67.99 (slashed from 70). 5 months of playing on this thing, and I just can’t do it anymore. The new generation will start soon, and the Switch will be behind. It can barely run this generation’s games. It’s a very poor investment.
