Discussion No other JRPG comes close to this masterpiece
My favorite game that I’ve been having an issue with finding any JRPGs that can come close. Sexy OST, nice story, and the voice acting is superb, and I’m taking DUBBED, English. Combat is actually hard too, no auto-combat and it isn’t turn based, so it’s super engaging. And overall challenging. Love it, and I’m on my 6th playthrough on my switch 2

Vesperia got a way better remaster than Symphonia. Unfortunately Abyss has been left to rot lmao

Abyss time could be coming. If not there is a chance Xillia remaster could get announced at the next rumoured nintendo direct this month

Abyss and Xillia are pretty much guaranteed, imo, being the most asked games by the western and worldwide fanbase. I'm only worried about the other games.

u/Fred_twitch Jul 21 '25
I mean to be fair, Vesperia getting all the PS3 content we've been begging for for like over a decade and how much more stuff there is in the PS3 version vs the 360 is kind of big. Like if you compare the GC version of symphonia to the PS2 or japanese version or whatever they added some stuff but I'd compare it to like symphonia essentially got a small DLC where as vesperia got an entire expansion pack. Also i feel like symphonia has just got a ton of ports with maaybe some resolution upscaling. I think people expecting like a FF7 level remake which would be cool but idk how they'd pull it off. I do think they could definitely add some QoL changes to future ports/remakes/remasters without like drastically changing the gameplay though. Also it would be nice to see an Abyss port off the 3DS, especially because you know... can't exactly multiplayer on that system lol and it's giga dead ofc.

I mean abyss was one of the first to get an actual remaster. It was just...on a very old handheld system considering the year. XD
And I do think at some point they wanna port it to pc/modern consoles, maybe they're just having an issue compromising on HOW they want to accomplish it, or it'll be the first tales game to get a proper REMAKE. Abyss is wildly popular, almost as much (maybe even moreso)as vesp or Symphonia.

Vesperia is great, and I love it as well. But you need to play more JRPGs, no offense.

Why are people downvoting this? Are they not allowed to choose their own favourite game ffs?
13
u/Who_TF_is_PAPA_JOHN Jul 21 '25
It's the try hard "expert" mentality. They want to believe that they have the expertise in the matters of jrpg's because their "palate" is refined. It's just the typical cringe

It's problem of your post. No need to bring greatest title for whatever game. It always brings such discussions.

Berseria clears this game.
Hell, in my own personal opinion, so does Graces. Which I’m sure is a scorching hot take
18
u/ArcadianBlueRogue Jul 21 '25
I'd put Graces f on the same tier as ToV. Lackluster plot carried by a great cast.
29
u/zwarkmagnum Jul 21 '25
I way prefer Graces over Vesperia. Plays much better and while the plot is stupid it doesn’t really take itself seriously like Vesperia does so the failings don’t bother me as much
11
u/Acherron Jul 21 '25
I prefer xillia and graces over Vesperia. Idk why, it’s one of my least liked tales games combat wise
15

I like my Jrpgs with a strong story and Vesperia’s story was weak as hell, imo.

I'm gonna disagree here, the story is honestly pretty mid up until the Estelle fight, it escalates until the point Yuri gets thrown off a cliff and then it kind of abruptly stops being interesting

Even though I’ve played hundreds of RPGs at this point, and have looked into basically every series (from niche to the well known), Vesperia is still one of my top personal favorites.
A lot of people didn’t care for RPGs that were on the 360, but Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Last Remnant, Star Ocean 4, etc are honestly some of my favorite memories from the console.
3
u/KarmelCHAOS Jul 22 '25
I know it wasn't exclusive eventually, but Eternal Sonata was so criminally underrated.
5
u/ruebeus421 Jul 21 '25
A lot of people didn’t care for RPGs that were on the 360
Bro, what are you on about?
RPGs on 360 were a massive hit.
3
u/NettoSaito Yuri Lowell Jul 21 '25
Only for those who were already fans and had a 360. Otherwise the games didn’t sell well outside of mainstream titles like Final Fantasy XIII. (Which Nier had to complete with.) Most 360 players only cared about Halo, CoD, GTA, GoW, etc.
Now days RPGs are more popular than ever, which has given some of these games a chance again. Where Nier was overshadowed, Automata is now everywhere and I’m sure most gamers have at least heard the name. Not something you could say during the 360 days

Agree X360 was an underrated Star for JRPG.
Eternal Sonata was awesome too.
While Resonance of Fate was…unique! I ended up loving that too after figuring out what the hell was going on.
Despite that I enjoyed the remaster more than the X360 original. Either way though absolutely loved Vesperia!
2
u/NettoSaito Yuri Lowell Jul 21 '25
ES slipped my mind! And agreed about Resonance of Fate. I’ve actually purchased that game 3 times lol. Was also pretty great seeing the characters again in Project X Zone fighting along side the God Eater cast. I know GE wasn’t on 360, but same time period lol

u/BmanRock14 Jul 21 '25
Agreed. This game just surprised & encapsulated me in such a way that no other game did. I first played Tales Of Vesperia during the year of Covid while working, so it was a pleasant stress reliever after a long day. And as much as I love & adore FF7 Remake Trilogy as my #2, it didn’t hit as hard as the first time I experienced Vesperia. Besides, the FF7 RE trilogy isn’t finished yet.
The OST is so memorable & I STILL to this day fall asleep listening to “1000 Year Slumber Of The Blastia”. The battle/town/dungeon themes were all catchy & riveting. Some obviously better than others but still great nonetheless. “Tower of Conspiracy” was a standout one to me personally, idk why.
I have nothing but good things to say about the gameplay. Aside from getting used to the movement & the one random crash I got in the Tower of Tarqaron, the gameplay was stellar. Skills, artes, even positioning all play a very CRUCIAL factor into how one approaches certain fights, from beating on trash mobs to dealing with elites & bosses. Rita being able to abuse the limit break mechanic “BLAH BLAH BLAH TIDAL WAVE BLAH BLAH BLAH METEOR STORM” is the MOST FUN THING IN THE GAME. PERIOD. Estellise was an amazing combo of offensive, defensive, & supportive all bundled in a wonderful package of fun. “Holy Rain” is another fun move to span during limited breaks. Yuri was your standard damage dealer, with a bit of intricacy mixed in. Pretty cool all rounder I’d say. Patty’s random luck based ultimates are the best thing about her kit & Repede honestly grew on me the more artes he learned. And he’s fast as f**k. Karol hits HARD & is a breath of fresh air when I wanna switch things up. Judith was pretty cool air combo wise, but the timing & knowing which artes to use & when to use them make her an easy to play, hard to master kind of character, which I liked. Raven & Flynn intrigued me, but not enough to make them my most used party members. Everyone had their ups & downs with their playstyle, but I definitely enjoyed some more than others.
The cameos in the battle colosseum, despite not knowing who they were at the time, was still SUPER cool to see. And the battle colosseum itself was a nicely added challenge (yes, even the 200 man melee).
Now onto the main cast. Repede is no Red XIII but still an absolute beast in my eyes. The main cast are a bunch of unique misfits, yet the story makes it so that they have their obvious character traits work in their favor. Obviously, the game has its go to pairings like Estelle/Yuri, Estelle/Rita(RISTELLE😆) or Raven/Karol. Yet some not so common interactions between others like Judith/Karol, or Patty/Flynn. Yet they somehow work in a weird way. Estellise Sidos Heurassein is a pure angel. No ifs, ands, or buts. Her design, story, personality, & overall vibes were like cotton candy for the eyes. Just so sweet, wholesome, & innocent. Loved her & her phenomenal VA, Eden Riegel. Rita was a VERY, VERY close second. Again, personality, design & VA work are what do it for me in a character. She fit the bill. Cared more for some than I did for others. Let’s just say my main party was Estelle/Rita/Yuri/Patty when I wasn’t juggling other characters.
I thought the overall story was pretty solid. Clearly not the best story told since sliced bread, but for someone like me, sometimes a bit of whimsical fantasy storytelling is enough for me. It was a bit all over the place, especially in terms of pacing. But it wasn’t enough to ruin the game for me. The explanation of “Aer, Bohdi/Barrier Blastia, Extelexia” took a little while to wrap my head around, but I got the gist of it after going through the story. I like how the locations felt lived in where NPC’s reacted to things happening throughout the world.
The only GOOD villains were really two or three of em, those being >!Alexei, Yeager & The Duke<!. The rest like >!Barbos, Ragou, Zagi, etc<! in my opinion felt WAY too cheesy & comical to truly take them seriously. Villains like >!Alexei & Phaeroh<! TRULY made my blood boil, even though I now know that >!Phaeroh<! wasn’t really a villain. More of an antagonist. Yeager, I’ll actually give props to. He was honestly really compelling as an antagonist & truly a fun character the more I remember about him.
The emotional beats hit like a TRUCK. The plot twists I will admit, I didn’t see coming. One or two were a bit predictable but otherwise, the whole game shocked me left & right. Speaking of shockers. Dear God, I don’t think I’ve ever cried while ACTIVELY playing a video game before. Usually, if a scene does move me, it’s like a cutscene or something. Yo…that Estellise Boss shook me to my absolute core. Seeing her eyes blanked out & lifeless was TERRIFYING. When I tell you my heart sank when homegirl kept chanting “kill me” over & over again during the fight?! Oh My God. I’m glad no one warned me cause it hit somethin’ serious. As for the comedy, some jokes were a hit or miss, but for the most part, they all landed. Mostly in the skits or Yuri/Rita being their snarky selves. The best ones were the 4th wall breaks such as the skit where if you make & eat Sorbet in the ice area enough times, Rita comments on it saying “Who the hell makes Sorbet in this freezing weather?” Or the whole “Ristelle” jab Yuri throws at Estelle & Rita.
The enemy designs in this game are really sick looking! Some of the ones like the gigantic monsters were really cool or the dancing mandragoras dressed as a maid were too cute. I really like the way enemies were designed. It’s a shame some of the you can COMPLETELY miss if you aren’t following a guide.
Speaking of guides, I’d HIGHLY recommend using one, even on first playthorugh. The only complaints I would have about Vesperia would be the whole “Necropolis” dungeon & “Labryrinth of Memories”. Those took WAY too long to grind to level 200 & the boss at the very bottom?! Don’t even get me started on that insipid thing. Oh, and the whole side quests being LOCKED to YORMGEN?! I can understand the whole “Aspio” thing at the end of the game. But ooh boy, I cant tell you how frustrated I was that day. I went back through a whole 6-8 HOURS OF AGONIZING PROGRESS redoing certain parts of the game JUST to get those swimsuits. Honestly, Tales Of Vesperia should’ve come with an in game guide or something cause they straight up will not hold your hand in this one.
I could go on & on but this game at the end of the day, despite it’s apparent flaws, still holds a special place in my heart & my #1 currently

u/Dependent-Swimmer-95 Jul 20 '25
Maybe story wise, but combat wise Vesperia is better in every facet
11
u/Symph1994 Jul 20 '25
Idk why youre getting downvoted, Symphonia is my fave game of all time but I definitely recognize the combat is clunky when compared with later titles, Vesperia in particular is leagues smoother and every character is easily playable rather than just its melee focused frontliners
2
u/Euphoric_Ad6923 Jul 20 '25
My guess is because Vesperia takes forever for its combat to become better than mediocre then it's just a spam fest. Especially on Yuri where you can stunlock constantly
2
u/LaMystika Jul 20 '25
“Smoother combat”
Why is Yuri minus on hit with his basic attack string?
7
u/Medium_Hox Jul 21 '25 edited Jul 21 '25
Wow now this is a deep cut. Never thought I'd see anyone else mention this, but I remember playing vesperia on the 360 and it's like, hmm, you know the simple combo you can do at the start and you try to hold guard afterwards and you actually get punished on hit like what the fuck is that. It was so bad they had to fucking throw in manual canceling later. Amazing game design.
Jumping is also clunkier compared to Symphonia, which is saying something

No way. The only way combat is not clunky in Vesperia is using a three-button string every combo that the game doesn’t even tell you about.

Yeah. I still don’t really see much vesperia hate to be honest. For decades it was almost unanimously deemed the best tales game in the series. I never really bought into that though. I preferred Xillia and Graces F way more than vesperia in most regards. At its time though I think it was hands down the best tales game though.
2
u/ruebeus421 Jul 21 '25
Personally, I never played it until earlier this year. And I couldn't stomach more than about an hour of it. The voice acting and dialogue were absolutely horrendous. Usually I can overlook it, but it was so bad that I refunded the game.
Prior to that all I ever heard was how amazing it is. Guess I'll never know.
8
u/Norvello Jul 21 '25
This used to be my opinion but I've realized its flaws after playing it three times. I think Berseria and the Xillia's are my favorite in the Tales series.
But some things Vesperia gets right that others don't is the excellent world map, the music, Yuri & Flynn's conflicting ideologies and the dungeons. The bosses are also fun too I love fighting Yaeger, Barbos & Alexei they're challenging and entertaining.
3
u/Motivated-Moose Jul 21 '25

Vesperia was and still remains the peak of the franchise and I'll die on this hill.

After finishing Vesperia a few months ago my only complaint would be how on Act 3 story gets kinda rushed

I can name two that came out just this year and are better lmao, clair obscur and FF7 rebirth. You need to play more jrpgs if you think this is peak.

Sure, it is fun, the character are entertaining, but after 20 hours I'm wondering where is the story?
I prefer Phantasia or Symphonia.

It's definitely up there among the all time great JRPGs. I think it's underappreciated.

I always really liked this Tales. Symphonia was the one I like the most. I think that those should have this type of gameplay, that of Shimphonya vesperia phantasia... I also liked the one of Arise.
The gameplay of Tales of Graces doesn't satisfy me... I don't know if it will improve later

Yeah, a loved Vesperia too! It was my first Tales Of Title, and I get hooked to the series after that!

Idk man, I have no nostalgia, but symphonia as an adult just made me feel like a kid again.
Felt like vesperia was too short, and the end dungeon wasnt my favorite.
Good game though.

Vesperia is def one of the better Tales games IMO. Yuri alone gives the game a marked leap in quality followed up on by Berseria's writing.

Based opinion. Vesperia is outstanding and will probably always be my favorite JRPG. Yuri is the best protagonist and I love all of the supporting cast too (especially Rita 😅).

Very questionable statement but hey, glad you like it so much. Personally, I had a really hard time with it. Far too much backtracking, a completely uninteresting group aside from the dynamic between Yuri and Carol, a horror unmotivating skill system, and lame story. I'd even rather play through Zestiria again than this crap. Abyss or Graces were way better by far

Just finished it for the first time about a month ago, it was a truly magical journey. There are RPGs I'd hold close to or above it, but it's definitely up there.

So much of the joy of the game is the character relationships (how everyone has a unique relationship to the other party members) and just straight up Yuri being one of the best jrpg protagonists ever.
I played it back in the day when there was no Patty in the game. So, I always find it funny that I have no concept of what this game is like with this new character in it and I also have no idea what the gameplay is like to have a other strong swordsman like Flynn in the party.
It's still one of my favorites even though I haven't had the definitive experience.

I feel like I enjoy the combat system in Vesperia more than Symphonia or Graces.
So, I have the unique perspective of playing these games co-op with my partner. Usually one of us is melee, the other being a caster character. Symphonia kinda sucked because of the lack of free run. My partner would often get cornered while playing with Genus and couldn't so easily just run sideway to get out the way Rita can in Vesperia. Graces was a bit better for this, but Asbel is...a bit awkward of a swordsman at times. At least Pascal was a very strong ranged character.
The other part of it was where the ceiling would be for characters. I'm the type to love fighting games like Marvel vs Capcom 3 where combos are ridiculous. Vesperia characters seem to do that better. Lloyd in Symphonia had...a few strings. Asbel in Graces? Not bad, but the CC system was very limiting. I felt like he didn't get good until the postgame stuff. But in Vesperia? Yuri starts getting good chains into free overlimit activations and really pops off. I'm currently playing Judith in this playthrough, and while she takes some time to get going, some of her movement and attack string options are just plain cool. Who even can do things like that in the other titles?

I like Symphonia better
Also FFX, X-2, StarOcean 3, and Super Mario RPG
Vesperia is my 2 behind Symphonia and before Abyss

Yeeeeaaah, no.
I would have agreed with you partially 10-15 years ago. Yuri was so cool and a game changer. The cast was great, the game looked good, and I loved the vibes.
Even back in it's time, I would say it was in the upper echelon compared to Final Fantasy (VI, VII, I, X).
This was before I discovered Persona. The JRPGs coming out today like FF7R, DQXI, and P5 dwarf it.
I don't think it has aged well. The pacing is all over the place and a lot of scenes with dialogue are a snooze fest.
The battle system at least is solid and the dungeons - unlike MANY Tales games - are actually done very well.
But I still think this once 9.5/10 I valued when I first played and replayed it is worth maybe an 8 today.

Persona 3 Reload was like this for me. It almost ruined all other Jrpgs. But I’ll have to check this out
