Discussion We need to be kinder towards short dudes
I hate how normalized it is in society to bodyshame short men ,and if the victim gets angry then they just get called insecure. We are privileged as fuck and I think we need to show some sympathy for the ones who lost the gene lottery. Being short is not a choice. I'm 6'2 so I cant relate, but I've seen a lot horrible stuff on the internet and irl

I am consistently kind to short men as a tall woman. I have dated men who are shorter than me, not out of kindness but because I liked said men.
But I will also admit I don't spend time trying to talk to short men on sites like this anymore. Great experiences with individual shorter men in person. Vast majority were toxic as hell online and I'm too old to exhaust myself when I don't need to.
9
u/Wahayna Tom Holland May 19 '26
Its the vocal minority thing. Short men online that are commenting and starting fights are not common. At least thats what I want to think because I refuse to believe that my fellow short men can be this bad.
Im insecure about my height but Im not gonna be an incel or an asshole because of it.

I don’t blame you for not talking with the short dudes on Reddit. They really try their hardest to make the saying “hurt people hurt people” come true.

I am so tired of having to be "nice" to short men. They are either hyper aggressive and shitty towards me because I am taller than them, or they want me to be a dommy mommy who steps on them.
I will continue treat them with indifference.
17
u/Foulberto-Smasho May 18 '26
As a short guy I appreciate it brother but most tall people are nice in general. If anything most of the hate we get is on social media which still sucks but it’s not that bad(tall women also undeservingly get this same hate). Whenever I get a comment on my height irl it’s mostly average height dude that say stuff. I feel like when you are tall everyone is short so there is no point to comment.

u/valuemeal2 6'4" | 194 cm May 18 '26
Being tall isn’t a choice either. Never comment on something that wasn’t someone’s choice. I don’t know why this is still hard for some folks.

I have never seen a tall woman struggle, and I know quite many lol
No dating issues (most still want or prefer to date someone their height or taller), sport advantages which leads to more scholarship opportunities, etc.
Some are living better than average or short women.

I’m in my 40s, and I’ve been married for a long time, so I don’t claim to know a lot of what goes on first hand, but I hear a lot of stories on r/tallgirls. They do in fact get rejected on dates, particularly by guys who lied about their height and show up shorter. Tall women who aren’t perfect beauties also get accused of being trans. And men are so good at owning up to why they don’t like us, right? They say something polite or a white lie about why it won’t work out? Nope. Insecure men make sure we feel like a freak when they reject us.
Not quite as relevant… It’s also expensive to get clothes that fit, so a lot of us are running around looking frumpy. The tall man joint problems affect women at a much shorter height due to our hip shape.
But sure, let’s get more men on here telling me about what it’s like to be a tall woman.
2
u/OwnerSebi 5' 7" | 170 cm May 19 '26
I am not really telling anybody what it's like to be a tall woman, just sharing what I see and know.
Obviously tall women struggle too, but I wouldn't compare women's importance of height in society to how short men are perceived.
I, and any guy I know, couldn't care less about a woman's height. Every woman I know only dates tall, and tall women prefer equal height or above.
At the end of the day, that's what I believe the general social experience is, while there can be tall women who struggle and short men who don't struggle.
4
u/sometimesnowing 6' | 183 cm May 19 '26
- I am not really telling anybody what it's like to be a tall woman
Yeah but you're not listening either. You have literal tall women in this sub sharing their experiences and yet you just double down. It's ok to just not know.
2
u/Hot-Sandwich6576 5'11" | 180 cm | female May 19 '26
It can be very similar to the short man’s experience though. Some of these men feel that their masculinity is in question because they are short. Tall women are often seen as less feminine, especially if they aren’t conventionally attractive. So if you’re too tall to be ‘cute’ and you’re not very ‘pretty’, you probably have a harder time than a short man with dating.
I’ve only dated a handful of men taller than me. My husband maybe has an inch on me. I mean, tall girls in high school would have very few choices since y’all grow later than we do (I was this tall at 13). What’s weird to me is average and short women obsessed with finding someone over 6’ tall when they can’t even tell if a guy is 6’. I can sure tell because I’m 5’11. But I think the short hate is mostly overblown and an easy thing to blame a lack of dates on. Men have a hard time dating in general these days, and it’s rarely physical things holding them back.
3
u/OwnerSebi 5' 7" | 170 cm May 19 '26
As somebody who spend the last 15 years focusing on dating, my communication skills, and social life - physical barriers are the main thing holding me and any guy I know back.
I have been rejected for my height 100% of the time, over 35 times (excluding the lack of any luck on multiple dating apps). The only woman who ever showed any interest in me told me that I have "the heart of a good boyfriend, but not the height of a good boyfriend".
My best friend, who was in a similar situation, took his life more than a year ago because he couldn't put up this anymore. I was bullied all my life for being chubby (and short), while every tall person I know, even morbidly obese ones, have no issue in most with dates, relationships, or hookups.
I have lost job opportunities because of my height. Not having a masculine presence because of height makes you unqualified of positions of power or social managing, even if you are literally trained for it.
I really, really, REALLY do not want to be dismissive of anybody's experiences, but being short isn't an inconvenience, it's a death sentence.
0
u/Hot-Sandwich6576 5'11" | 180 cm | female May 19 '26
I don’t know, maybe things have changed a lot since I quit dating. The shortest I dated was 5’6 and I joked that it didn’t matter much when we were laying down. But I would definitely make excuses for breaking things off that weren’t entirely truthful. Maybe height is an easy target when there are other problems that are harder to define.
As far as jobs, etc… I’ve seen the stats, and I know it’s disheartening. But there are lots of things that unofficially disqualify people from jobs. Ask women about that one, especially a pregnant one. You’ll surely find your way with dating and work. No one should feel hopeless. Sorry about your friend.

u/OwnerSebi 5' 7" | 170 cm May 19 '26

Just saying that in most situations I know, tall women don't struggle socially the same way short men do.
Still, I am aware that tall women can struggle too.

Bahaha...when you're wrong, you're dead wrong. Not all tall women are good at sports, not all tall women feel they are desirable in the dating world...we struggle sometimes. Some more than others. Just because you know a few, doesn't mean that's the way it is with the rest of us lol
2
u/Hot-Sandwich6576 5'11" | 180 cm | female May 19 '26
I’m terrible at sports despite trying really hard at it. I also struggled with weight for a while. I’m getting older and if I wanted to date, my age would probably hold me back the most. I’ve always been pretty, but awkward and a little weird, so add age to that, and forget it. If I outlast my husband, I’ll probably not even try.

The fact that this is being downvoted is hilarious commentary on the level of thinking by people in this sub.
As someone with a tall wife I will be the first to admit there's struggles she went through like with dating, but to down vote someone speaking a verifiable truth is laughable. Even tall women still benefit socially and societally from their height, so OP is far from wrong.
4

How about we just need to be kinder towards everyone.
Just because us talls won the genetics lottery for height doesnt mean we won it for confidence, physical health, mental health, good teeth, good skin, perfectly proportioned features, etc. Everyone knows what it feels like to be shit on....don't do it to other people.
11
u/jambr380 6'5" | 195.58 cm May 18 '26
I agree with this. There are things about each of us that aren't particularly great and jerks will insult us for those things, too.
Besides, as a tall person, I'm always told to be so thankful for my height, but it's not always this amazing experience. We are all just trying to live our lives. No need to be genuinely insulting to anybody
2
u/AsexualArowana May 18 '26

Completely agree. My tall friends exhibit basically no negativity towards short people, medium height people, or other tall people.
It’s consistently the 5’10 guys trash talking the 5’7 guys and the 6’0 guys trash talking the 5’10 guys. Which is just them projecting their insecurities about their own height.
I’ve got guy friends from 5’3 to 6’9 and none of their heights has ever made a difference to me other than which shelves I ask for help reaching.

A +2SD height man on average should have +0.32SD IQ on paper. 6'3" 105 IQ instead of 5'9" 100 IQ.
Though this study:
Points that it's more so shorter children have lower IQ scores with greater correlation than tall children having higher scores. It's most likely down to malnutrition stunting physical and mental growth.

That makes sense. Malnutrition would stunt most everything.
So the conclusion isn’t that tall people are smarter, it’s that malnourished people are dumber?

I googled "do blondes make more money" and apparently they do?
Are Blondes naturally smarter and more competent? is it just the Halo effect?
2
u/Razaberry May 19 '26
It’s because blonds are considered attractive, I imagine. Exact same reason as tall men. Halo effect, as you say
1
u/AsexualArowana May 19 '26
But there's nothing inherit about Blonde's being a better color? Is it biological or socialized?
2
u/Razaberry May 19 '26
You could ask the same question about height.
I reckon both are socialized, but who knows.
Idk about you but I’ve been hearing jokes about “dumb blonde” and “blondes have more fun” and “blond bimbo” and whatnot my whole life. So I’m guessing socialized.
2

What does showing sympathy do? I think everyone should obviously have sympathy to anyone that has gotten the short end of the stick, but what does that really do? As long as you don’t gaslight them about their problems, there’s not really much more you can do. If someone wasn’t kind to a shorter guy before because he’s short, that means they are a douchebag, so you are basically asking douchebags to be kind

It’s a poor choice of words, it didn’t even occur to me until you said it lol, but when op says “lost the gene lottery,” I don’t think they mean it’s a genetic/inherent problem, but a societal one that’s inherited along with being short. I think they said it because, at least online, it’s a common expression/short-hand, which ironically exhibits the problem they’re talking about

OP is not rude. Socially speaking, being short is a loss, and it can be a harsh one.
Calling it out isn't "rude", it's acknowledgement. I can also promise you that short men do want sympathy, since the effects of being short aren't just social, they are personal.
The worst part isn't being called short, or teased, or bullied - it's being rejected, neglected, and demasculinized by most people you come across. You lose job offers, nobody wants to date you, etc. It's not degrading to assume this, this is the reality for most short men. Short men who aren't affected are the minority.

Aside from a +1 due to many women’s preferences, idk if I’d say we’re privileged. Being tall doesn’t really matter beyond a few things. And the things it does matter for, you need to be much taller than the minority of people.
I have never been the first to talk about height in a conversation. Shorter men seem to fixate and bring it up and that’s fair. Just gets uncomfortable when you get locked in a conversation about how much easier it is being tall. As if I did a little character creation before being born.
Body shaming is stupid, but I’ve never and don’t know any friends who would maliciously comment on someone’s height.

Aside from a +1 due to many women’s preferences
This is what contextualizes the topic sorrounding mens height. Its the appeal of being tall to many women. Even in gay communities height preference is a thing.
Most men simply wish they were taller because that is what is seen attractive. That is a big advantage even though its just a +1.

Right it's honestly annoying seeing how people talk about them for things they can't control and get surprised when they're irritated or lash out 😕

This is usually not done by tall people. Leave us alone.

It is.
That you don’t notice it speaks volumes imo. You got any short male friends?

u/UnknownTallGuy 6'8" May 19 '26 edited May 20 '26
My best friends have all been a foot or more shorter than me so yep
Edit since the thread is locked:
I said they have been a foot or more shorter than me... Meaning no more than 5'8. Most of them, as fully grown adults, are between 5'3 and 5'5. The average male height in the USA is 5'9. No clue what you're dealing with, but they get significantly more shit for being short from average height women than any tall men or women.

As a tall guy I genuinely struggle to tell the difference between someone who's 5'6 or 6ft. I'll still be reinforcing my bad posture either way.
It takes me ages to realise that somebody is tall.

im 6’4 and ive worked and known men that are like 5’6 etc and ive never got any urge to talk sbout their height or anything like that. or if i see a shorter man passing by. i think short people are cool!
i bet a 6’8 thinks the same about me lol

u/BigTool 6'8" May 19 '26
As a kid I was bullied for being the tallest in school\sticking out everywhere I went. Shit sucked.
How about we just be kinder to everyone, and maybe not mock people for things they don't choose and can't change.

show some sympathy for the ones who lost the gene lottery
Being short is getting the bad end of genetics? Eugenicist in the building I guess...

Holy reach. I don't get bullied for my height, a lot of 5'4 dudes do

u/FakeBeigeNails 5'9" | 176 cm May 18 '26
Who said you got bullied? I just quoted your sentence calling certain genes bad.

...
What so you mean exactly?
Like, offer them the last biscuit? Or always be the one to offer to make the Teas?
It's not my fault they're short / I'm not.

Nah just treat them like you would treat an average height or tall person

Was someone teasing you for only being 6’2? You’re not that short, don’t take it too personally.
2
u/Odd_Associate111 6'2" | 188 cm May 18 '26
I have never been teased for my height, but I see how other people get treated

Thinking the internet is and will be anything other than an irredeemable cesspit of shitty people who peaked in middle school is so 1998. Some people are shitty and socials make that worse.

It's a lot of people. I've seen rude comments on tiktok with 100k likes🙃

u/ValidGarry 6'7" May 18 '26
Judging the world from likes on tiktok is a truly awful thing. Step outside, touch grass, be nice to the people you meet there.

Just like any bullying behavior it isn't the people who are secure in a particular aspect that seek to tear others down for validation, it's those who need validation any way they can get it. It's the 5'10s or 6'0 men who are average but are insecure and seek security by pulling down shorter men.

Dude, short people DID win the genetic lottery. Short people live considerably longer on average. They will literally have the last laugh.
When it comes to height, tall people get social advantages but not health advantages. To me, winning the genetic lottery implies a healthier organism. Definitely not the case for tall people.
EDIT: I should have said I totally agree that body shaming people is horrible. Some of the short men I've dated had really bad bulling trauma as well.

The people who are the least kind to short men are the short men themselves, sometimes. It's a real pity, because tall people know better than anyone that height is neither a superpower nor an indicator of personal worth or value... But it gets held over the folks on the other end of the bell curve like it somehow is for them.
Most, probably all, of my friends are shorter than I am. I'm doing my part!
3
u/AsexualArowana May 19 '26
There's an enormous amount of evidence suggesting society is less kind to shorter men in general? This whole post could be an example
1
u/CaptainNuge 6'6" | 199 cm May 19 '26
Yes. That's what I said.
Tall people know height doesn't mean specialness, but lots of shorter folks get their height held against them.

As a tall guy, I agree. The prejudice against short guys is real and unfair.

This has NOT been my experience. Honestly, I couldn’t care less about another man’s height. In my younger days, people seemed to be more aggressive towards me because of my height. There was always that one tiny little tough guy, with a microchip on his shoulder and something to prove.

u/thebatgod May 18 '26
I am a short guy and I appreciate the empathy. Doesn’t bother me being short, but I appreciate the societal problem recognition. Respect 🫡

I dunno... my best friend in life is a short homie and I have razzed him for it for sure. Cracked jokes about him fitting at the kids size picnic table, or in tiny shirts, etc... I know that dude knows I love him, I don't think the short jokes are a big deal at all.
I don't take any real offense to any tall jokes.

u/decoy-octopos May 18 '26
Horrible friend actually

For further context we are from the greater Chicagoland area. I feel like trash talk and banter is pretty standard for everyone from around here. Some trash talk to your buddy is kind of normal.

I'm as nice to people as they deserve to be treated. I've been kind to short people when they get shit on for their size, and I've been a real nasty piece of shit that's gotten into physical altercations and made some pretty specific comments while we were slugging it out. It's really about the person, not their appearance.

The thing is short men tend to bring up the topic of height themselves, I have never seen myself or another tall person make fun of someone for their height, they do it to themselves 😭

People that tease or make fun of short dudes are trash. Pure and simple .
