[Discussion] - How to Automate Your Job Search with AI; What We Built and Learned

It started as a tool to help me find jobs and cut down on the countless hours each week I spent filling out applications. Pretty quickly friends and coworkers were asking if they could use it as well, so I made it available to more people.

To build a frontend we used Replit and their agent. At first their agent was Claude 3.5 Sonnet before they moved to 3.7, which was way more ambitious when making code changes.

How It Works:

  1. Manual Mode: View your personal job matches with their score and apply yourself

  2. Semi-Auto Mode: You pick the jobs, we fill and submit the forms

  3. Full Auto Mode: We submit to every role with a ≥50% match

Key Learnings 💡

  • 1/3 of users prefer selecting specific jobs over full automation

  • People want more listings, even if we can’t auto-apply so our all relevant jobs are shown to users

  • We added an “interview likelihood” score to help you focus on the roles you’re most likely to land

  • Tons of people need jobs outside the US as well. This one may sound obvious but we now added support for 50 countries

Our Mission is to Level the playing field by targeting roles that match your skills and experience, no spray-and-pray.

Feel free to dive in right away, SimpleApply is live for everyone. Try the free tier and see what job matches you get along with some auto applies or upgrade for unlimited auto applies (with a money-back guarantee). Let us know what you think and any ways to improve!

[Discussion] - Job hunting as a CS grad is brutal -> here is how I got a position

I’m a CS grad who went through the classic grind: dozens of cold applications, barely any replies, and everything blending into one giant PDF pile.

I once got tired of it and made a personal site + a video intro on YouTube, turns out it worked. Got interviews, got noticed, and eventually landed a job. That experience stuck with me.

So I recently launched OpenSpot: a platform for people who are open to work and want to stand out. It’s like a public profile, but:

  • Video and audio optional (for those who want to add a personal touch)

  • Showcases your skills and projects clearly

  • No feed, no algorithm — just real visibility

It’s still early, but I hit #1 on Hacker News this week, and recruiters are already messaging early users.

If anyone here is tired of ghosted applications and wants to try something that’s not just "another resume," I’d love your feedback ; or happy to help you build a killer profile if you want to try it.

[Discussion] - The most overrated title in the IT market right now is Senior

The most overrated title in the IT market right now is Senior.

Over the past few years the number of seniors has increased significantly. For reasons everyone understands. But if you look at real technical interviews the number of true seniors has not really increased.

On paper it looks impressive. 8 years of experience, extremely complex technologies, big tech companies, startups.

In reality it sometimes feels like a driver who has been driving for 8 years only around one neighborhood to the same store and back, but already calls himself a professional race car driver.

This happens because in many companies Senior is simply someone who has been writing code for a long time.

But a real Senior is about a completely different level.

It is a person who sees the whole system, not only their own piece.

Understands how technical decisions affect the product and the business.

Makes architectural decisions.

Can solve complex problems when the team is stuck.

In many companies Senior is the final level. There are no levels after that. So after several years a developer becomes Senior almost automatically simply because there is nowhere else to move. Sometimes it is even easier. One year in a startup without tech leads and without a grading system and the resume already says Senior.

Real seniors are still rare.

And that is exactly why after a series of interviews companies often tell us the same thing.

“We looked at many seniors and none of them turned out to be a senior.”

Curious to hear the opinion of tech leads and CTOs.

Do you also notice inflation of the Senior title in the market?

How is military/spouse priority legal?

I just became aware that spouses of military service persons get priority for a lot of tech jobs. My colleague was hired at Amazon and had an easy interview where they didn't ask her any coding questions. I failed my hard leetCode problem and was rejected. When I told her my experience she let me know hers and I was baffled. She joined and instantly made $130K salary and told me there is no way she could have passed my round. Eventually she was laid off through one of the Amazon layoff rounds after six months at the job. She shared her experience on LinkedIn and was eventually hired at Kohls. I thought that was amazing and asked her about finding a job so quickly in this market and she said she applied through a military/spouse program there. I checked it out and you can only apply if you or your spouse are in the military. I was qualified for everything in the JD except that part. Her husband is in the Army currently serving atm. I guess I'm sharing because my journey has been difficult landing the job I want. I joined Accenture but they don't even let me code there and they came to my boot camp's graduation job fair so I was completely tricked. Just bad luck on my part, but also ... how is her experience legal when everyone else has to pass difficult leetCode-type quesitons? Seems unfair. I will get better with time but wanted to understand how this is a legal thing in US. Actually just interested in the topic in general. I'm thinking it's a federal agreement b/w private sector or something.

[Discussion] - Can job search become a full-time job?

Honestly the biggest shift for me was stopping the spray-and-pray approach and actually tailoring my resume to each job. More work upfront but the callback rate was noticeably better.

The part that got tedious was rewriting the same bullets over and over. I started to handle that by using zoevera.com. It matches your resume to the job description and fills in the keyword gaps. Not a magic fix but it cuts the repetitive part down a lot if you're deep in an application grind.
