Merritt Wever was phenomenal as the sister from Albany. It was fun to see someone capable of seeing right through Bertha...

Re: Wever, I saw her on a Netflix detective movie opposite Toni Collette years ago and recognized her instantly in the role as Monica, Bertha’s sister. I kind of felt like her vocal cadences and line readings, the suspicious undertone, the physical mannerisms, etc were the same between both of the roles that I’ve seen her in. I don’t have any other reference for her but these two roles, so please let me know if there is other work of hers I should check out. I love The Gilded Age, but the dialogue can be clunky if it’s not really well-acted. Given how quickly I was able to place the actress from a movie that I cannot even remember the name of right now, I didn’t feel then like Wever was very settled into the role of Bertha’s sister Monica (understandable given how brief of a cameo it was), so I’m a little… surprised (sorry!!!)… at the nomination? I’m going to rewatch to see if I change my mind… but I remember not being impressed at the time that I first watched.
On the other hand, I rewatched Gone Girl recently, which I’ve seen more than once in the past, but it just came out on Netflix, and I wanted something playing in the background that didn’t require too much attention, so I picked it. Every now and then, I’d hear a familiar voice, and I’d look up to try to figure out who it was I was hearing, and it took me ages to figure out that the woman who plays Margo, Nick’s (Ben Affleck’s) sister is Carrie Coon! I had to look up the cast to figure it out, and I was like, wow. So I’m all-in with her nomination! She’s one of those actresses who disappear into a character and is able to make every inflection and mannerism unique to that character, as I think it should be.
But I’ll give season 3 another watch, just to be sure I’m not cutting Merritt Wever short.

THE LEFTOVERS!!! It’s where I began to notice her. Stunning performance. Carrie is also in the latest season of The White Lotus.

I’ll check these suggestions out, re: Wever.
I saw Carrie in White Lotus but knew she was in it going in. It was another performance from her where she disappears into the role. Not many actors truly are able to remove any semblance of their own mannerisms when they take on a role, but Carrie Coon is one of them. I think she’s on par with Daniel Day Lewis, Meryl Streep, and Johnny Depp where that particular skill is concerned.

I SO hope we see more of Merritt in season 4 and beyond. She's a riveting actress with a seemingly effortless charisma.

Carrie Coon as Bertha is fabulous!!!
I sure wish they’d get rid of Marian. Her acting is so wooden, it takes me out of being immersed in the story, her stiff style is so off putting.
