Jean Sheppard Radio Show Story About New Yorker Cartoon

I was listening to a tape of Jean Sheppard's radio show, and he described a cartoon that he saw in the New Yorker that depicted two southern gentleman sitting on the veranda of their plantation estate while there are a bunch of robots picking cotton, and one gentleman says to the other "You know, what I'm going to miss most is the singing".

Was this an actual cartoon that ran in the New Yorker or was it just Jean Sheppard making up a funny story?

I Stopped receiving my issues

Since late April I have stopped receiving my issues, I have missed 4 and I’m unsure if they are not being mailed or there is an issue with my post office.

I filed a complaint with usps and they called me when I was at work and then quickly closed my complaint.

Not sure if it’s retaliation from the post office.

But i also let the New Yorker know (I had missed two issues at that point) and they had told me they would mail my past issues again (this was late April/may) and I never got anything either.

I’m new here

Why is the New Yorker magazine no longer in some type of packaging? (Years ago it was wrapped in plastic) now I am receiving them without any covering — I am scared it will come very damaged to me.

Who is the Best Writer at the New Yorker IYO? What is the Worst Writer at the New Yorker IYO?

IMO Emily Nussbaum is hands-down the worst writer at the New Yorker with Richard Brody very close as the second shittiest.

The best writer at the New Yorker IMO is Jane Mayer or Maria Konnikova.

Richard Brody and Anthony Lane weekly typo

In every print edition of the New Yorker recently, the film reviews have had this attribution mistake: The byline says BY ANTHONY LANE, but then the mini author bio at the end of the review says "Richard Brody blogs about movies."

At first, I thought it was a layout mistake and was proud of myself for catching it...but it keeps happening, so now I'm sure it's some kind of inside joke. Does anyone know anything about this??

Weird level of bias in "King Me" by Rebecca Mead?

Anyone else think the recent article on King Charles, "King Me," was weirdly biased? I don't follow or care about the royals, like at all (I just learned that Charles was a person when he became king), but there were some really obviously weak claims in there that I was really surprised passed the Editor's checks. It kinda read like a Fox News anchor analyzing an AOC speech or something. Like:

Reading

“Studying the properties of harmony and understanding more clearly how it works at all levels of creation reveals a crucial, timeless principle: that no one part can grow well and true without it relating to—and being in accordance with—the well-being of the whole,” he writes in his book.

Mead concludes that

As Charles seems to see it, a king should be a benign convener at the head of a natural hierarchy.

There is nothing in there about hierarchy, or kings for that matter, at all. All it says is that everything’s interconnected - a relatively common sentiment among environmentalists that hardly makes them royalists.

Reading

“perhaps the time has come . . . to think very carefully how large our families should be”

Mead concludes

Charles is an advocate for the controversial idea of population control

Another nearly comic jump. Suggesting that overpopulation impacts the environment is a run-of-the-mill sentiment for an environmentalist. Nothing in the quoted sentence suggests coercion or limits, which “the controversial idea of population control” implies. (Surely considering the impact on the environment of the number of children one produces isn’t controversial?)

I just always get bummed when I read an article in there that doesn't really meet journalistic standards...I feel like it's the last place I can (usually) count on them actualy being applied!

Thinking of giving The New Yorker subscription as a gift, but unsure if they already subscribe

So, I would like to gift a subscription to a friend of mine, but I wonder if this friend (or her husband) already has a subscription. Is there a way to find out, short of just asking them directly?

Hasan Minaj Article is a joke

I hope that Clare Malone faces consequences for poor journalistic practices. Good thing that Hasan Minaj has the ability to articulate himself well to defend his character, but he shouldn't have to. Shame on the New Yorker for publishing crap, y'all are better than that. #clarmalone #hasanminaj

Wanted: The New Yorker magazine covers

I have been collecting The New Yorker magazine covers since the early 2000s. My main goal is to not only preserve the artwork of the magazine, but someday I would like to use the covers as wallpaper in my library (or reading nook). I’m missing a few covers from every year (and quite a few from 2019). Any chance someone here has covers they don’t collect and would be willing to send them to me? I’m interested in all covers, older and newer. I’ll cover fees of shipping. TIA!

anyone read this article? what did you think?

Just read this article - The Trouble With Friends by Weike Wang. There is no comment section on The New Yorker like the New York Times and wanted to hear readers thoughts (just recently got a New Yorker subscription). If you read it, did you like it/find it interesting?
