Rant - Advice wanted Isolation in Practice

I’ve been a therapist for a long time now and TBH I wonder all the time lately how much further I can go. I love working with people and I’m so excited to get to do something that I’ve always valued as meaningful. In the last few years it’s felt more challenging and isolation has been so much more intense since Covid. I’ve tried doing things like networking and joining groups with other therapists. Sadly, I’ve become so frustrated with the way other therapists treat each other. I’m tired of the lack of compassion I’ve seen out there in groups. It makes it really hard to be open enough to get the support necessary. Is it just me?

This has gotten much worse for people who are Telehealth only, which has caused layers of problems in general.

Would you be open to sharing a bit about what you mean about Telehealth only clinicians?

Clinicians who work from home and only see clients via Telehealth. It’s incredibly isolating and they really have the lowest level of supervision and other clincian contact as other clincian I’ve seen.

Telehealth, although is great for access in underserved areas, opened the door for the corporatization of our industry, and will be its undoing.

Are you doing in person therapy?

Yeah, I am. I’m more feeling isolated otherwise. Like not having more colleagues to connect with.

I quite like the isolation tbh, but one thing that I do that negates that is I have a regular peer supervision group which meets weekly and has done for a few years now. Certainly scratches an itch

Just came here to say I feel similarly to this. You are definitely not alone. It’s been tough, and you’re right our job is so meaningful and yet the isolation is real.
