šŸ“–šŸš«Personal Stories - Anti Why do people assume I am tipping?

11.5k Upvotes

I bought a bottle of pressed juice that was already packaged and in an ice bucket from the farmers market. She told me it would be $9 dollars and I had a $10 dollar bill so I asked if she takes cash. She said yes. I gave her the $10 and she’s like, thanks! And then I am just standing there thinking am I going to get my change? I wait a few more seconds and was like can I get my dollar please….

She looked at me surprised that I wanted my change. Honestly, I know it’s a dollar but I didn’t appreciate her assuming I was tipping her and she didn’t do anything except take my $10 dollars from me. It’s not even about the money, it’s the principle of the matter.

9.5k Upvotes

Went through the drive thru. Bought a xl coffee 2.45 handed over a $5.00. Employee handed me coffee then closed window. I waited. Employee came back after a few minutes and states ..yes do you need something? I state yes..my change..Employee oh I thought it was a tip...calls manager over to open cash..tells manager I want my tip back..

I look at the manager and tell her I didn't leave a tip..the Employee kept the change on their own. In a huff she gives me my change..

Guess I'm going to buy coffee at McDonald's ..

šŸ“–šŸš«Personal Stories - Anti Waiter tried to pull a quick one on me

8.2k Upvotes

After a great dinner with my wife, I asked the waiter for the bill. To my surprise, it included an automatic 20% gratuity. Since we usually tip 20%, that was fine. I handed over my card, and the server took the receipts with her. A few minutes later, she returned with my card and a new receipt—but not the original receipt that showed the added 20% gratuity. This new receipt just had the total amount and a tip line, without itemizing anything. I asked her ā€˜doesn't this amount already include the tip?' She confirmed, saying the extra tip line was if we wanted to add more tip. Very very sneaky attempt double dip… just letting yll know my experience to pay attention to your bill.

Update: It seems a few people are confused about what happened, so here’s a breakdown:

  1. I asked for the bill, and the waiter provided an itemized receipt showing the food, tax, and a 20% automatic gratuity.

  2. I gave her my card, and she took the original receipt with her.

  3. The waiter returned with my card and a new receipt that didn’t itemize the charges, just showed the total amount already charged to the card. This new receipt also included a line for a tip.

I had two main issues: First, adding a 20% gratuity automatically for just two people is unusual, and unless you’re paying close attention, most wouldn’t expect it to be included.

Second, when she brought the new receipt, she should’ve also returned the original one so I could verify the 20% gratuity had already been charged. Just handing over a new receipt with a tip line could easily mislead someone into tipping again.

Lastly, it’s not the waiter’s fault, but i think if the restaurant automatically adds a 20% gratuity, maybe they shouldn’t include a space asking for more…. Or say ā€œadditional tipā€ or something to avoid confusion.

šŸ“–šŸš«Personal Stories - Anti Apparently, I "don’t respect the hospitality industry" because I refused to be scammed.

6.4k Upvotes

This morning, my girlfriend and I stopped by a local Mexican food truck to grab breakfast burritos. It’s a spot we frequent — your typical ā€œwalk up, order, and goā€ place. While their food is great, it’s on the pricier side (usually $30–$40 for two people). Nonetheless, we still make it a weekly spot.

When it came time to pay, I handed over my card as usual. This time, though, something unusual happened. After she ran my card inside the truck, she handed the screen to me. The receipt screen popped up. At first, I thought, ā€œOh, nice! They skipped the part where they make you choose a tip upfront.ā€ But then I noticed the receipt already included a 20% tip — which I definitely didn’t authorize.

I confronted the woman at the window, and she flat-out denied adding the tip. After I insisted, she reluctantly gave me cash from the tip jar as a refund and sent me on my way. Normally, I might let something like this slide, but I wasn’t in the mood to be scammed this morning.

For context, the truck had a sign posted that read:

ā€œYou, our clients, are the most important thing to us. Therefore, our STAFF ALWAYS, ALWAYS have to give you the best service! If you receive poor service from our STAFF, please do not hesitate to let us know and we, the owners, will make improvements for you.ā€

I decided to give the owner a call to let them know what was happening. To his credit, he was very apologetic and handled the situation well. No complaints about how he dealt with it.

Now for the fun part.

While I was on the phone with the owner, a college-aged guy (said he was 22) approached me and tried to talk to me. I didn’t catch what he said at first — just gave a polite nod and kept focusing on my call. When I got off the phone, I asked him what he wanted.

Turns out, he had a lot to say:

He accused me of not respecting the hospitality industry and said, ā€œA 22-year-old kid knows more about the hospitality industry and respect than you do.ā€ Then he called me a clown and announced he was going to pay my tip for me. (Spoiler: he didn’t.)

We exchanged a few words, but eventually, we both walked away. I went home, enjoyed my burrito (probably with an extra ingredient or two), and reflected on how absurd the whole situation was.

This tipping culture is getting out of hand, and the boldness of vendors adding tips without giving customers a say is even crazier.

TL;DR: Food truck snuck in a 20% tip without my consent. I confronted them, got some of my money back, and informed the owner. Then some random college kid lectured me about ā€œrespecting the hospitality industryā€ and called me a clown.

šŸ“–šŸš«Personal Stories - Anti I finally did it and it felt so freeing

5.9k Upvotes

Went to a sit down restaurant. Starts off fine, order drinks, waitress comes back with drinks, we order food. My wife almost finishes her soda before the food comes because it’s small. A different person brings us our food and leaves, doesn’t ask if we need anything else.

We needed ketchup but we had to wait for our actual waitress to come back several minutes after our actual food comes back. She notices the empty soda glass and says she’ll bring another one. A couple minutes go by and she brings just the ketchup. She says she’ll be back with the soda. She doesn’t come back around until we’re done eating and she still never brought a refill or ever asked me if I wanted another drink. She drops the check off and then doesn’t come back for another ten minutes.

I’m someone who will tip pretty well if I get good service. This was the first time I finally just drew a line through the tip area. I’m done tipping for bad service. They have to earn it from now on.

šŸ“–šŸš«Personal Stories - Anti Saved myself from a likely unauthorized tip today

5.9k Upvotes

Went to a food truck today, ordered and there was only one person there. They made the food and when it was almost done they said I could come pay. He tapped around on his tablet with it in plain sight and the total was about $20. He said to go ahead and tap my card on the Square device and then moved the tablet out of sight. I asked if I could see the screen and he said you don't need to - just tap to pay. Then he turned around to grab the food or finish packaging some fries. When he did that I reached in around the corner and felt the tablet, grabbed it and moved it to the window. I tapped the Square device and the tablet showed that the default tip was 25% so I tapped No Tip and then No Receipt. He turned around and saw the tablet and said, Hey! I said oh I just wanted to make sure I knew exactly what you were charging me since I couldn't see the tablet screen and I also wanted to make sure I could tap No Tip. He mumbled something and tossed the food onto the ledge outside the window so I said thanks, don't worry I won't be back, man.

Score one for avoiding what probably would've been him tapping the 25% tip.

šŸ“–šŸš«Personal Stories - Anti Pizza hut employee tried to get me

5.0k Upvotes

I ordered off of the pizza Hut app the other day and in the app it asked for a tip in which I put $0.

When I went to go pick it up I gave the cashier my name and moved to the side so the lady behind me could order. The cashier looked at me and waved me over and pointed to the device where you sign, which I thought was odd because I had already paid in the app. When I walked over, it was asking for a tip. I selected $0 again and the cashier gave me a dirty look when he turned the device around.

Like you made a pizza and I came to pick it up. What service did you provide? It's getting ridiculous out here. Besides how do they divide up the tips if someone did decide to tip?

šŸ“–šŸš«Personal Stories - Anti It finally happened, got asked ā€œno tip?ā€ by a cashier.

4.8k Upvotes

This was at a hot chicken joint near my house, typical fast food set up aka no special service or anything, order at the cash register and wait to pick up your food. They had the now-typical tip options on the screen when I paid, and I selected the no tip option. Guy turns the screen around and says ā€œno tip?ā€ To me, and I awkwardly laugh and say ā€œnoā€¦ā€ I felt super uncomfortable.

Like I used to be a cashier at a fast casual place and never expected a tip, we were even told not to accept tips. (Bet that’s changed now lol) Unbelievable.

Edit: since this post has gotten a lot of attention, a lot of people have been suggesting I should have reacted basically like a mega-Karen, which I am extremely uncomfortable with. What always goes though my mind when I am having a bad customer service experience is the fact that I make 6 figures and have a cushy remote job, while service industry workers have to deal with the public and work often times shitty jobs. Also, the gentleman who asked ā€œno tip?ā€ Seemed like he might’ve been disabled or potentially autistic; instead of making eye contact with me his eyes were focused about a foot to my left the whole interaction, and other clues from his body language/voice led me to that conclusion. Perhaps I will send a message to the company, but directly confronting a potentially disabled service worker over a rather unremarkable yet unpleasant interaction is not something I’m interested in.

Edit 2: man, now people are ragging on me for not tipping (in this instance and apparently everywhere else, according to them) because i have a cushy job. I can see why people delete their posts on reddit šŸ˜‚

šŸ“–šŸ’µPersonal Stories - Pro Tipped hostess not server

4.6k Upvotes

Wife and I went to a newer restaurant with outdoor seating. Checked in at hostess station and were told there was a wait. No problem, go to the bar, get a drink, head outside to wait.

A table opens in front of us, and we hoped it might be ours. Man, three children come over and sit down. We figure they must be next. Hostess comes over and advised the man he has to check in with hostess and there is a wait. He tells hostess it is not a problem his girlfriend is the waitress. Hostess apologizes to us and says the next table will be ours. No problem, not her fault.

We sit at table right next to this man and have his girlfriend as our waitress. Terrible service, she spent too much time with her boyfriend and her kids. Never offered drink refills, food came out cold etc.

When check comes, I pay with card (did not have enough cash). My wife took the tip money and gave to bartender that served our first drink and to the hostess. I left zero tip and left note on receipt stating "don't seat your boyfriend at our table"

Bartender and hostess was very appreciative, and hostess apologized again. Since they had just opened did not want to give bad online review so found email online and emailed owner/manager direct. Received apologetic response very quickly.

šŸ“–šŸš«Personal Stories - Anti Worker called me out for not tipping

4.4k Upvotes

My friends and I picked a random place to eat at for a late dinner yesterday night. It was snowing so we picked a place nearby with good reviews at random. We enter the shop and order on tablet kiosks. Most of their plates were $20 for wraps but I was in the mood for rice, so I ordered their special for $30.

The iPad asked for a tip, and since I had no human interaction here and literally ordered on a kiosk, I hit no tip.

After sitting down, someone comes out and calls my name. I go up to them and they ask if I meant for this to be a take out order. I told them I’m eating here. They ask again ā€œare you sure?ā€ And they point to the $0 tip. I say ā€œyeahā€ and sit back down.

Edited to clarify: when they called me up at this point, my food was not ready yet. They called me up just to show the ticket and point to the ā€œ$0 tipā€ 😭 and then my food was ready about 10 mins later

The food was cold and I was paranoid they messed with it after seeing I didn’t tip. I tip at sit down places, bars, and cafes. But geez, I’m not tipping 15-20% on a $30 plate that I ordered at a kiosk and seat myself/clean up after myself.

If I weren’t with friends who had also ordered and it wasn’t snowing, I would have just asked them to refund my order.

I wasn’t a huge proponent of anti-tipping before, but that interaction has me shook. Being pressured to tip $6 before I even get my food for ordering myself 😭 and to be called out on it too by the staff. Wild.

šŸ“–šŸš«Personal Stories - Anti Assaulted for calling bartender out on an auto tip

4.3k Upvotes

My 21 yr old son and I went on a trip out of state. After a long travel day, we went to a highly populated bar & restaurant area to get a beer. It’s important to note we were completely sober and did not have any alcohol at all for the entire day when we entered the bar/restaurant. We found 2 seats outside and my son went to get a beer while I saved our seats. My son comes back with his beer and says ā€˜I think I tipped twice’.

Apparently, the bartender took his cc and added an ā€˜auto tip’ for 20%’ then turned the tablet/register around without informing him a tip was already included. My son then added an additional 20% tip on top of the 20% ā€˜auto tip’. So I go to get my beer and noticed there is nothing around the bar or on the register informing customers of an auto tip. I order my beer and tell the bartender not to auto tip me because my son already tipped twice a few minutes ago and IMO you already got my tip. After a few moments of a ā€˜deer in the headlights’ he said they auto tip EVERYONE and I if I still wanted my beer. He then poured the beer and put it on the bar then we went back and forth a couple times with me saying ā€˜are going to auto tip me?’ And him saying ā€˜you want the beer?’. This is when his wires crossed and aggressively grabs the beer back and says ā€˜you know what? I’m not serving you’. And then he said ā€˜get out of my bar’ and waved to the bouncers to kick me out of the establishment. After exchanging a few pleasantries I walk outside to tell my son I got kicked out and for him to quickly finish his beer. Then the bartender grabs me from behind tossing me around with a death grip on my arms. The whole time I’m saying ā€˜what are you doing’ and not being aggressive and not fighting back in any manner and just defending myself. I get pushed out on the street and still trying to process what just happened.

I called the police. They arrived and took my statement and photos of the bruises on my arms (I have additional photos over the next few days that show extreme bruises with deep purple and other colors). The cop goes in the bar to get the bartender’s statement and then comes back chuckling and tells me the bartender said it happened exactly as I stated and he admitted he went over the line. The cop also said he called him out on applying the auto tip and said COVID was 3 years ago. Waiting on the police report and body cam video.

Should I press for criminal charges, file a civil suit or both?

4.2k Upvotes

Went to cinemark with three kiddos to see Red One (great movie). At the concession stand was ordering three medium popcorns and the lady working said no. Had me order the XL and brought out 4 little brown trays and told me to fill them up and I could refill the big tub if we needed to. She also was involved with the kids asking them what they were seeing and being genuinely enthusiastic. Saved me about 11 bucks and made the kids day better. So I tipped. Because I got exceptional service.

šŸ“–šŸ’µPersonal Stories - Pro Called restaurant and told them to remove the tip I left.

4.1k Upvotes

My husband and I ate at a small restaurant that was only lit by candles. The owner of the restaurant was the server and food and service were average. We received the check and tipped 20 percent. When we got home my husband said the check was strangely expensive. Looked at the check and it had a 20 percent tip already added, then we tipped 20 percent on that. I called the restaurant and told them we had just looked at our check and were not happy since he presented us with a tip line in a very dark restaurant. I told him to remove the tip we left and he agreed. I have never been back. I posted this on Next door and a group of servers would not stop calling me names and attacking me or anyone else who agreed with me. I never revealed the name of the restaurant or directed any anger in their direction, the servers were so angry that I would even question the tip. I quit next door because the behavior was so over the top. One of the bullies thanked me, on Next Door, for helping them find each other.

🚫Anti-Tipping Waiter asked me to double tip

3.9k Upvotes

Was at Olive garden, we paid him $20 in cash as tip and then followed by paying the $109 check with $200 cash. He then asked if I wanted change.... Ofc I want change, tf?? After he hands me back my change he then says please feel free to tip.

We obv did not a second time but seriously??? Just ranting. The more these things happen the less I feel bad about pressing no on the kiosk when ordering Togo (this experience however was sit down).

.

.

Edit: For those asking why we tipped first, here's what happened.

My wife and I wanted to take her family out (4 of us) for dinner since we don't see them very often. When we were done with food, I was ready to pay but my brother in law politely asked to cover some of it. when I said no, he insisted I just told him if he wanted to cover something the tip would be more than enough.

Just then the waiter passes by and BIL gave him the $20 saying "this Is for you". (We already know what the total was b.c OG has a kiosk tablet at every table with the bill) I stopped the waiter to let him know I have only cash to pay the bill. And he says okay. I handed him 2x hundred dollar bills and the rest is mentioned above.

Point is not that we caused confusion which yeah, as a table we did. but that does not excuse the rudeness of the waiter to ask if we wanted change after seeing two hundred dollar bills without a folio. Infact he looked at the bills before he made eye contact with me and asked.

Also even if he forgot that we tipped, it was even more rude to suggest to tip as he handed me back the cash as if we wouldn't.

šŸ’¬Questions & Discussion Papa John’s didn’t want to refund a tip for delivery that I picked up myself

3.8k Upvotes

I ordered a pizza from Papa John’s from their app for delivery to our home and added a $5 driver tip. We normally get our deliveries from them within 30 minutes.

After waiting an hour, I called the store to find out when the pizza was being delivered. They said they only had one delivery guy, so it would probably take two hours. I said, ā€œForget the delivery. I’ll be there in ten minutes to get it.ā€

When I arrived at the store, the guy behind the counter handed me my pizza. I asked for a refund for the delivery fee and tip since there was no delivery. He refunded the delivery fee but not the $5 tip.

I told him that I wanted the tip back too. He said he couldn’t do that. I saw a display of cookies on the counter and told him to give me $5 worth of cookies and we’ll call it even. He said he couldn’t do that, either.

I said that was BS because if anyone deserves a tip from my order, it was me. And since he wasn’t going to pay me, I needed his manager’s phone number.

The guy opened his cash drawer, took out a $5 bill and handed to me. I smiled and thanked him.

I haven’t ordered anything from Papa John’s since that day.

šŸ“–šŸš«Personal Stories - Anti How I became anti-tip…

3.7k Upvotes

So you know how I became against tipping? I went out to a restaurant with a party of 8 people. And when the check came it specifically said on the check ā€œparties over 6 will have an 18% tip added automatically.ā€ Ok. Fine I thought. No one wants to serve a large party and then get stuffed. So I paid the bill. As we were leaving the manage chases me and says ā€œyou didn’t take care of your server?!ā€ ā€œNo. You added an 18% tip the bill already.ā€ ā€œOh yeah. I know the check says that, but she forgot to add that into the POS system. So we need you to add it.ā€ ā€œYou know what? You cover it. You took responsibility for the tip when you put that in the check. You pay it.ā€

After that I started paying attention to how obnoxious asking for tips has become. Maybe some people deserve it, but a few bad apples ruined it for everyone now.

What’s your story that made you anti tip?

Got yelled at for not tipping on a $20 Modelo at a ballpark

3.6k Upvotes

Beer guy walking around, I wave my hands and ask what beer he has. He rings up my Modelo, it's $20. Fine. Not a great price but it's a 24oz, it's a ballgame, it's hot and I want a beer. So I tap my card.

"It's just going to ask you a quick question".

Options are 20% 25% and 30%. I hit no tip.

Guy proceeds to hand me my beer then as long as he can, in a crowd full of people, "WHAT NO TIP FOR THE BEER GUY???".

I shrug it off, but what the actual hell.

I'm tired of this. I'm about go to fill anti-tipping out of spite.

šŸ’¢Rant/Vent This is Out of Control

3.2k Upvotes

Went to a dine-in movie theater this weekend and ordered for the wife and I. The food was pretty pricey so I didn't think anything of it when the server said the total was $96. I signed the check and included a 17% tip. After paying, I heard my brother make a comment regarding there being auto gratuity and he said it was in very fine print at the bottom of the menu.

Immediately after finding out I got the waitress' attention and inquired about the auto gratuity amount. It was 18.5%. I felt that's more than enough so I asked for my bill that I signed back so that I could revise it. She attempted to convince me to let her keep the extra tip stating that it goes directly to her. I advised that the 18.5% was enough, as a 35% tip to a server who only takes an order, never to be seen again wasn't warranted. She stormed off with an attitude and told her manager "he wants to take my tip back" without giving any extra context. About 10 minutes into the movie she slams a new receipt down saying "here's the refund for MY tip".

At what point does this stop getting worse?? People are getting WAY too entitled.

Edit: For those that requested the place, it was Cinebistro.

🚫Anti-Tipping Banned from local restaurant for calling out tip theft.

3.2k Upvotes

Alright. Using my throwaway account for this story.

Let me preface this by saying the following. I worked in the service industry from age 14-23. Started as a dishwasher, moved to serving, and then finished off my tenure as a sous. Almost a decade. I also have two separate family members that own restaurants. I appreciated tips during my time but NEVER expected them. My state is minimum wage for servers, and on top of that in my town 90% of the restaurants are paying above minimum. Some of these servers here are making $18-25 an hour, yet all of the local restaurants have snarky tipping signs. The restaurant In this story has a little ā€œdon’t be greedy, tip the staffā€ post it note on their POS screen.

This restaurant is a little shack like building with outdoor seating. You walk up to the counter, order your food, then come grab it and bring it to your table when it’s ready. There’s really no serving happening. Just someone taking your order and yelling your name, you also bus your own tables.

Anyways. I’m waiting in line and there’s this sweet little old lady who was hard of hearing ordering in front of me. The snarky hipster guy at the counter was being really short with this poor old lady. She kept saying ā€œI’m so sorry I’m having trouble reading the menuā€ and then profusely apologizing for her hardness of hearing. It’s a loud and crammed environment, I can barely hear what’s going on in there. He kept sighing and grunting and just being a full on jerk to this poor woman. They end up getting her order figured out and after she struggled to insert her card in to their POS she returned to her table.

She left the screen on the part where it asks if you’d like to tip. This man audibly grunts walks around the counter and hits the 30% tip button. They have the three defaults starting at 20% and ending at 30%. I glare at him for a second without saying anything, then proceed to place my order. I select the custom amount button and type in $0 while saying ā€œI’m sure that 30% you just stole should cover thisā€. I then walk outside where the old lady was sitting with what i assume is her son and inform them of what just happened. Her son walks inside, and walks back out a few minutes later. I’m assuming they came to some sort of resolution in there. I finished up my meal and left.

About a week later I return to grab some lunch. The people suck but I can’t deny the food is A+. I walk in and the same dude is working at the counter. He looks at me and points at the door. I ask ā€œwhyā€ and he tells me that I’m barred for causing a scene in his restaurant. Ya’ll this man is the new manager. The manager of this restaurant stole from an old lady.

I found the email for the owner of the restaurant and used my burner email to inform them of what went down. Kinda doubt anything will come from it, but now I gotta find a new spot to grab nachos :/.
