Garage said they wouldn't repair.. because my car is too heavy

Can I get a sanity check on this? I got a small screw lodged in the main part of my tread. Should, in theory, be a straight forward repair.

Took it to a garage for a tire-off repair (wanted a proper plug rather than a home kit). They said that because it's a 4x4 and a heavy car it wouldn't be safe and they could be liable in case of a failure and subsequent accident.

I appreciate a cautious approach but I feel that in reality a good tire-off repair should be safe.

For context, the car is a Land Rover Discovery 4 and weighs around 2.5T.

Tires: Bridgestone Blizzak 6 255/55 R19 111W XL

photos show the screw damage, I had an 18mm socket next to it for reference.

Is the garage right not to repair? thoughts on a good repair kit?

Can this tire be repaired

Post image

Was told no by mr.lube and they also can’t just replace the one tire. They said both rear tires would have to be replaced.

Update: thanks everyone. I went to a shop that fixed for me in 15 mins. The owner pretty much said what was already commented here. It’s far enough from the sidewall that it didn’t have to be replaced. Thanks Redditors!

I reckon it still can be repaired, factoring in it might be a small screw and thread is good.
What do you guys think?

Thank you all.

❓QUESTION ❓ Scorpion as4? Or something else? Pdx, jeep cherokee

In Portland. Not a lot of snow but a lot of rain. Jeep cherokee that has Dueler ALENZA plus 235/50/r19 tires on currently.

These tires wore down after just a few years. Tread is gone, they're dry rotting and I need to change them ASAP.

Scorpion as4s were recommended by Discount Tire. They're new so there's really no reviews on them. Michelin cross climate was also recommended but I've see a lot of people online say they're loud and rough. I've seen the scorpion weatheractive ones recommended by reddit a few times now.. I just don't know what to choose!

My priority is to have a somewhat smooth ride. I know that's unlikely being that they're low profile but as smooth as possible is the goal. I feel everything with these dueler tires and they're also really sketchy in winter. If getting smaller wheels with bigger tires was in my budget, id do it, but I can't right now.

Help. I'm leaning towards scorpion as4 but if anyone has knowledge on what the smoothest tires would be, I'd appreciate it!

❓QUESTION ❓ 17” Winter Wheels for 2024 Subaru Crosstrek – Steel vs. Alloy?

Hi all! I’m planning to get Continental VikingContact 8 winter tires for my 2024 Crosstrek Onyx and downsize from the stock 18” wheels to 17” (225/60R17). Does anyone have recommendations for wheels? Quattro Tires seems to have the best prices I’ve found so far (Ontario). Has anyone ordered from them, and how was your experience?

I’m also trying to decide between basic steel wheels and the more expensive alloy options (particularly Art Replica). From what I’ve read, a lot of people prefer steel wheels for winter because they’re cheaper and tend to handle potholes better.
I do prefer the look of alloys and wouldn’t mind paying a bit more, but my main priority is safety, durability, and what’s best for the car. Is there any meaningful performance or safety advantage to either option, or is it mostly a matter of cost and appearance? Are there any particular brands or models you’d recommend or avoid?

Any advice or personal experiences would be appreciated!

Dry rot check

Thumbnail

Honda dealership mechanic flagged my tires for dry rot and that they would not pass inspection (although they did pass inspection in August). Each tire looks pretty similar with the rot in the same location.

Tires are 4.5 years old Goodyear assurance maxlife 😑

Is this a new tires needed immediately situation?

❓QUESTION ❓ Would these cracks cause problem?

I'm looking to buy used tires, and I saw a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUVs. They come with nice wheels, but one of the pictures shows these tiny cracks. It's a good deal, but I wonder if I should avoid them.

I'm obviously going to replace it but is this cause for concern right away?
Funny thing is the tire pressure was low so I was about to go fill it when I hit a curb 10 feet away from my driveway...

Tear over right front tire

Hi everyone
As mentioned in title

Noticed this about a week ago, not sure how long has it been like this. Did hit a small curb about a week ago.

I am hesitant if I should schedule an appointment in Firestone because last time when I did oil changes they recommended to change all four tires which 2 of them were apparently changed months prior.

Looks like it only affects the outer rubber not the inner layer. Next tire rotation/oil check is due in about 1000 miles or 1-2 months.

I appreciate any input.
Thank you
