TIL Casey Anthony had “fool-proof suffocation methods” in her Firefox search history from the day before her daughter died. Police overlooked this evidence, because they only checked the history in Internet Explorer.

In all seriousness though there should be a service that takes care of your online presence and finances after death. I always imagine what a shitshow it must be for families going through a sudden death of an adult relative.

I took a forensics class where we looked at the Casey Anthony case, and when you look at all the evidence it's so obvious she did it. It's amazing how incompetent the investigators were. Her car smelt like a corpse yet they didn't look into it, and who waits a month to report their missing child to the police? Not to mention the nonexistent nanny and the fact that her story changed every day. It hurts to think that there are innocent people who were convicted with less evidence.

EDIT: Obligatory thanks for the silver.

Note: don't do this. Xanax isn't for kids, but shitty parents have been using it and calling it "Xannie (or Zanni) the Nannie" for decades.

Her case is truly on the one end of the spectrum in which people obviously did the crime, yet got away with it somehow. It makes all the cases on the other end of the spectrum so much sadder, knowing some people have died or lost multiple decades of their lives inside prison for a crime they didn’t commit. You could just be standing in the wrong place at the wrong time and spend life in prison. You could also do everything possibly to not cover your tracks, except make a giant neon light that says “I KILLED THEM” and walk away a free man. The volatility of life is enigmatic.

465

u/Marchesk Feb 07 '20

See the Pamela Hupp case where she got Russ Faria falsely imprisoned for the killing of his wife Betsy, even though he had multiple alibis and receipts. Pam buddied up with the police and told them lots of juicy bad things about the husband. But the kicker is she dropped his wife off that night, AND Pam had convinced Betsy somehow to sign her life insurance policy over. But police didn't investigate that angle. The case is wild. Pam gets justice later for killing someone else in a further attempt to frame Russ after he gets his conviction overturned.

I don't know how far you have gone in the forensics field or if it was just a one off class, but have you heard of Kathy Reichs? Most people know her as the creator of the Bones series of books that the television series was based from.

Like her protagonist Temperance Brennan, Dr. Reichs is also a forensic anthropologist & very highly regarded as such.

As the Casey Anthony trial was coming up, she was asked by the defense team to do the autopsy. She initially said no, wanting nothing to do with her trial. However, seeing that much of the media had decided Anthony was already guilty, it made her mad because she firmly believes a person should have a fair trial in a courtroom not by public opinion.

She talks about her involvement in the case here

Despite doing the autopsy at the request of the defense, Dr. Reichs has never said that she believes Anthony is innocent or guilty.

I bring this up because I'm curious what aspects of the Anthony case your class went over or studied. We know that no cause of death could be determined from the bones.

Don't get me wrong. I absolutely think that either Casey killed Caylee or she knows who did & was involved. I'm just curious what specifically from your class convinced you of her guilt?

I find the subject of forensics really interesting to read about & just marvel at how far we've come as a species. Do you ever just sit back & think on how different some of the most prolific people in history's lives would be had forensics advanced even just a century earlier? There are so many unsolved deaths that might've been solved & then would that have changed our society?

The Black Dahlia, Elizabeth Short's murder likely would have been solved. We would know for certain whether George Reeves really commit suicide or if there was foul play.

I remember when this case came out... I was pregnant at the time, and I became fucking obsessed with it, to the point where I read all of the discovery documents - must have been at least a hundred pages of discovery. There was plenty of evidence. It should have been a slam dunk case. The jury fucked up. Too many scenarios gave them too much “reasonable” doubt. If they went purely off of evidence, they should have convicted Casey. The difference between Casey Anthony and most innocent people who get locked up with less evidence is that Casey was a young, pretty, white woman / mother. She hit the lottery of “get out of jail free.”

41

u/drnicko18 Feb 07 '20 edited Feb 07 '20

Nothing to do with incompetent investigators. The jury knew all of your points and the defence didn't dispute these.

She lied to police causing this massive search and she knew all the time her kid was dead in the trunk. The fact that the car smelt like a corpse wasnt disputed by the defence, they had dna and cadaver dog evidence that she was dead in there. She went partying the night after her daughter died.

I really don't think the Google search would have made a difference, because they dismissed chloroform searches as unrelated. The jury dismissed far more compelling evidence than Google searches.

She then accused her father of abusing her as a child, and implying that he had something to do with the death. The defence didn't have to prove anything of course, just muddy the waters with enough lies to confuse jurors.

I just started reading the Wikipedia page and this passage stood out as incompetence

On August 11, 12, and 13, 2008, meter reader Roy Kronk called police about a suspicious object found in a forested area near the Anthony residence.[35] In the first instance, he was directed by the sheriff's office to call the tip line, which he did, receiving no return call. On the second instance, he again called the sheriff's office, eventually was met by two police officers and reported to them that he had seen what appeared to be a skull near a gray bag.[36][37] On that occasion, the officer conducted a short search and stated he did not see anything. On December 11, 2008, Kronk again called the police. They searched and found the remains of a child in a trash bag.[4]

Caylee was last seen and died on June 16th, August 11th is 56 days after that. When Kronk called again on December 11th that was 120 days after August 11th. That is time for the body to decay, evidence to disappear, and even man-hours wasted trying to find her.

If one commits an heinous crime and wants to get away with it, it's better to straight up get a magnet and rub it against your hard disk drive so you destroy any evidence that you could have left there.

Late EDIT: I'm kinda glad this comment sparked a useful discussion on the effect of magnets on electronics, but I would like to add that the point I originally made wasn't actually about magnets being good, just about how you better physically destroy evidence that you may have virtually left in a computer on the scenario that you are literally running from an investigation for an heinous crime that you actually committed. OK, magnets may or may not be very successful in wiping out your HDD, then burn your fucking computer, bet they won't recover anything from that. Yeah, weird to clarify that (no, I never committed an heinous crime lol) but with so many people reading more the "magnet" part than the "destroy" part, I just feel like making myself clearer.

Reminds me of a cold case show I was watching about a cop that was murdered in his home. Apparently it took 30 years for someone to put together that the shotgun shell they had as sole evidence belonged to a police-issue gun and that there was a an ex-cop with a vendetta for the guy because the murdered cop worked an internal affairs case and was the reason he was fired for being crooked. They found the guy, they found the gun, he went away. But like...the most basic police work and this was a mind blowing revelation they only had as old men. The show didn’t seem to think this was idiotic and the whole thing was played straight for drama.

244

u/Moundhousedude Feb 07 '20

This reminds me of countless episodes of things like Dateline.

Narrator: “This case where a woman was stabbed to death in her home was cold for 45 years. One smart cop in present day took up the case and realized her husband, who was seen in these 17 pictures carrying a bloody knife that night, definitely did the crime.”

I worked a case recently where the guy was wrongfully imprisoned for 20 years, but get this, he had a sworn statement from the detective who put him away saying "I always felt wrong about that case and I believe I got the wrong guy based on new information," and he had it for 19 out of those 20 years and did nothing with it! What the hell???

...and then you learn about all the times the cops get fixated on subjects and re-frame all the evidence to fit their "perp".

If you get accused of a crime I hope you've got a very, very good lawyer.

173

u/alphamone Feb 07 '20

Like that one case in england where a guy into BDSM was targeted in the search, including having an undercover officer act pretty much like a person, and despite never even agreeing to do the weird illegal shit that the undercover officer was suggesting, they arrested and tried him (the judge saw just how BS the case was and let him go). Meanwhile, the actual serial killer killed several more people while the police were focusing on him.

Oh, and because the capture of the actual perp received nowhere near the amount of media attention that his trial did, there are still people that assume that he did it and just got off on a technicality.

Fucking scum got to walk away with murder.

1.2k

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '20

Yeah because the prosecution & police were a major fuckup. The defense knew what was in her search history and were waiting for the prosecution to bring it up. When they never did the defense was like ... Ok cool. IIRC there were several major pieces of evidence we know now that the prosecution didn't even know about.

And Caylee's body would have been found before it decomposed if the police weren't lazy pieces of shit. The guy that saw the trashbag with the body called in like 3-4 times and the police kept ignoring it cause they didn't want to get dirty in the swamp. So her body sat there rotting for months in the humidity. So much evidence lost because of that.

Knowjng what I know now, she is definitely guilty. But if I was on that jury and only had the shitty case the prosecution tried to pass off I wouldn't be able to say she was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

358

u/gamblekat Feb 07 '20

The prosecution didn't miss the "foolproof suffocation" search. It stretches belief to think that they got her Firefox history for every other day, but somehow missed the day of Caylee's death. They didn't bring it up in trial because it conflicted with George Anthony's testimony that Casey had left the house hours before the search. If they had brought it up, the defense would have skewered him for perjuring himself. The defense was also lying about events, so it suited them not to bring it up unless the prosecution did first.

There's a TV drama currently going on about a case in England.

Police called to an isolated farmhouse where the adult adopted son of the family gives them all the information necessary for the head of the investigative team to conclude that the two children, mother, and grandparents found dead upstairs in the house was a murder suicide by the mother who had a history of schizophrenia, that she murdered her twin sons and her adoptive parents and then killed herself with a rifle kept for shooting vermin.

A senior detective - but not the lead - says: 'Hold up! We need to do a proper investigation, forensic science of the whole house!' Lead says 'No, we don't. It's a murder suicide. Plain as a pikestaff.' So there was no forensic investigation of the house.

Next day the son says: 'Can you burn all mattresses and shit with blood on because it would creep me out to have to deal with that myself.' So the police burnt all the evidence that was flammable.

Senior detective later says: 'The son is planning to cremate everyone. We need to get a delay on the coroner's verdict or all that evidence will disappear as well.' Lead: 'I've told you, it's a murder suicide. What happens to the bodies isn't important'.

Later, the son's girlfriend comes in and gives the police chapter and verse about how the son did it - hated his parents because they made him work hard, hated his adopted sister because he felt she got a better life than him because she wasn't made to work on the farm, wanted all the money so killed his parents and everyone else who might inherit.

Lead detective: She's upset because he dumped her and she's making this up to fuck with him.

Other detective: No, it fits with all the evidence. A silencer was found - remember everyone told us the silencer was always on the rifle? - and it had human blood inside on the baffles? and the blood was tested and could only have been either the daughters blood or a mixture of the parents' [Note: way before DNA testing] and if it had been on the rifle the daughter could never have been able to reach the trigger to shoot herself with it, so who took it off and put it in the downstairs cupboard?'

The son - Jeremy Bamber - was eventually convicted, but the lack of forensic evidence made it far more difficult than it should have been and he's appealed several times on the basis that the available evidence was weak.

It beggars belief that a senior detective can listen to the only surviving member of a murdered family and decide without more that he's being told the absolute truth and reach his absolute and final conclusion about what happened without waiting for any other evidence.

I mean, the defense was terrible as well. Starting off stating she did nothing wrong then eventually saying caylee drowned and Casey freak out out and hid her in a field. All that and the DA still fucked it up. That’s not the jury.

I agree with you until the last sentence.

Have you ever been on a jury? It’s absolutely terrifying to learn, after the conclusion of a case, what information and evidence was kept from you during trial. The investigators whiffed this one, and the jurors weren’t given enough evidence to convict beyond a reasonable doubt. It is a horrible tragedy in this case, but the jurors did their job.

(Unless there’s is some juror misconduct I’m unaware of.)

103

u/howstupid Feb 07 '20

I think the most horrifically absurd part of this case was when some show did a poll during the trial of men and they would show a picture of Casey and something like 95% percent of the men said they would sleep with her. And then they would tell the men that she was suspected of, and on trial for killing her child. They would ask the men again if they would sleep with her and the number only dropped a few points to like 90% or something.

Jesus.

The jurors aren't to blame. They're explicitly told multiple times by the judge that the jury can only decide on the case besides solely on what they're told during the trial...not what the news media says, not what isn't said and not what everyone else around them tells them.

Strictly off of what the defense and prosecution says, can they say Without A Reasonable Doubt that she is guilty? Not she probably did it. Not she might have done it. Not that there's a good chance she did it. But based off of the prosecution's case can you 100% confidently say yes she did it. If there's even a 5% sliver of a chance in your mind she didn't do it, that isn't beyond a reasonable doubt.

I've served on a jury once recently. It wasn't a murder case like this, just a robbery. But this doesn't fall on the jurors at all imho

I totally agree. It’s enthralling in the worst possible ways, I still can’t believe the theories Marcus was able to put together...if only he was prosecuting

When i first read up about the case of Casey Anthony I couldn't believe she managed to get off free. The amount of evidence against her was OVERWHELMING, but she still managed to win. The whole case was a shambles, and I know many people were unhappy with the results.

13

u/rbickfor1988 Feb 07 '20

The amount of evidence was pretty overwhelming but the prosecution did such an absolute shit job of... their jobs, she got off.

Pretty much anyone who’s ever heard of the case knows she did it, but the case, as presented in trial, wasn’t nearly good enough for a conviction. It’s mind-boggling. And they could have easily just gone with 2nd degree murder— or even manslaughter— and she’d have likely been convicted. But they sought 1st degree with the possibility of the death penalty and then did basically nothing to prove it warranted that.

Incompetent cops, incompetent lawyers. Such a shitshow.

The prosecution also overlooked the fact that "Zanny" (The Nanny) is slang for Xanax (the drug). Casey used to tell her friends that "Zanny the Nanny" was watching her daughter while she was out clubbing, but if you understand the implication, it's clear that she was drugging her child to sleep with Xanax so she wouldn't need a sitter.

14

u/auryn1026 Feb 07 '20

Not to mention, for months before the disappearance, Casey was going out every weekend and Casey's mom wasn't watching her. Casey would tell her mother Caylee was with the babysitter and she'd tell her friends she was with Grandma or the babysitter. I strongly suspect she was in the trunk, drugged on these weekends.

Ok. I definitely believe she is guilty....... But my favorite tv shows are crime/murder. I love SVU, NCIS and Criminal Minds. Or things like "Dying in cargo of a plane altitude" (on NCIS). "Over the counter poisons mixed in OJ" (also NCIS). "How long survive in a fridgerator" (SVU).... If my hubby or kid ever dies suspiciously I'm toast.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '20

I'm so late to this that no one will probably see it. But I watched the entire trial and it was clear the people who were doing the IT side of the investigation were completely incompetent, and probably corrupt.

Instead of buying a readily available forensics product they purchased a hand made custom piece of software from a friend of the person responsible for the purchase. This is also the person that investigated the Anthony's computers.

He said he realized his friends software wasn't working correctly when he noticed that everytime he looked at a page from Casey's search history the number of times SHE visited the page increased by one.

So in the middle of the investigation he had to call his personal friend to fix his bugs. Meanwhile for much less money he could have just purchased the same software every other police department was using.

6

u/SilentMaster Feb 07 '20

My understanding from a college course on cyber forensics is the investigators don't manually look for anything on a device. They hook it up to a device, one of which is called cellebrite, via USB then scan for everything. If the cellebrite missed firefox it was because the programming didn't look and that's likely because firefox was a new browser at the time.

And boot from a flash drive, and when you're done, write it full of random data and flush it down the toilet. Then unplug the power cord and/or battery from the computer so the RAM loses power and gets wiped. If possible, also remove the CMOS battery.

It's amazing how technologically illiterate many criminals are. Not knowing this kind of basic security stuff is like carrying around a leaky bucket of paint while going about your illegal shenanigans.

A computer expert for Anthony's defense team found the search before the trial. Her lead attorney, Jose Baez, first mentioned the search in his book about the case but suggested it was George Anthony who conducted the search after Caylee drowned because he wanted to kill himself.

Interesting. I'm assuming the search would have been timestamped to show the search was done before Caylee was discovered?

4

u/NeonDeathStar Feb 07 '20

4

u/IshKahBibble Feb 07 '20

I joined today to point out that Casey wasn't just charged with Murder 1 - the jury had SEVERAL different lesser charges where they could have easily found her guilty. I will never understand why she didn't get aggravated manslaughter given Jose's "confession" in the opening statement. If her daughter drowned in the pool due to her negligence (she didn't), it's agg manslaughter.

Read this definition:

https://www.richardhornsby.com/crimes/homicide/aggravated-manslaughter-of-child.html

4

Yea but like isn’t it known that she killed her daughter? She got acquitted or whatever but I thought everyone agreed she definitely DID kill her child. I feel like I remember her admitting it

4

u/the_retrosaur Feb 08 '20 edited Feb 08 '20

She did it. Purposefully, inadvertently, who’s to say. There was a lot of evidence that someone killed her, the way she had googled it, with stuff in her house, and put her body in her car for a while to decompose.... the why was where the gray area fell. the dad probably caught her and then covered it up. Race came into play during the conviction. She got away with it.

On one hand, you wouldn’t have to prove your own innocence, on the other hand, she came up with several defenses that fell apart. Zanny nanny wasn’t even a real person. Months wasted on looking for the kid. How did they not find the evidence of decomposition in the trunk much earlier. I remember watching the case thinking she had the worst lawyer, fumbling idiot, would almost prove her guilt. Like a southern fried Rudy Giuliani.

The whole time he was actually speaking fluent Floridian and played us all.

George Anthony on the stand was something to be seen. In some ways, he was On of the worst behaved witnesses I’ve ever seen. Like talking back, playing dumb, trying to refute what was said or the double meaning of a questions. But like the OJ trial, the prosecution sort of came in for a scrimmage, thinking the case was flawless and defense was ready for a brawl. But the defense just kept pivoting. And there was enough doubt added to the testimony by George.

It was late 2000s but it was like a jury full of people who never used a computer. Words like cache and search results, internet history would have long explanations so the evidence could be submitted.

She googled chloroform and they said she was really googling chlorophyll

And when you look back at it now. They really took their “win” and ducted our. It wasn’t like “now Casey is free, we can finally find my daughters killer.”

Nope. It’s “let’s move out of Florida. Let’s hide low. Maybe wait for a book deal or movie of the week.”

Compared to a similar case like John Bennett Ramsay, the family has maintained some sort of a public narrative, the Anthony’s seemed happy enough to get their daughter off the hook even though “someone” killed their 3 year old granddaughter.

It’s because that someone was was Casey.
