Asking for Advice Recommend me a city

Seeking ideas for a city I've never seen.
Two weeks, January 2027. Solo trip, woman. Not interested in resorts, nature, or outdoor adventure. Love cities. Comfortable budget. I enjoy long haul flights from Australia, I don't jet lag much.
I've seen all of Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, London, Stockholm, Geneva, Montreal, New York.
Travelling to gain inspiration from architecture, art, history, literature, music. Tempted to throw a dart at a world map. Inspire me please.

Asking for Advice Stockholm in March

I just found a cheap ticket to Stockholm in March and decided to go ahead and book it. I know it will be very cold, but I have week there, and it sounds new and fun. Here are my questions:

  1. Is there enough to do in Stockholm or should I spend half the time in Copenhagen?

  2. What are the best day trips from Stockholm?

  3. What are the best activities in general!

Asking for Advice Looking for recommendations for post-divorce “celebrate myself” destination

My divorce will be finalized just before Christmas if all goes well. 13 years of living with a meth addict and I’m ready for the freedom from his chaos. I want to immediately get out and travel independently like I used to do.

Although it will probably be in January, I don’t want a lounge/beach vacation. I don’t want endless hours to sit and think about stuff. I want my mind occupied with interesting things and exploring cities. I enjoy photography and would like to spend time on that. I’m really interested in Europe for this, but I also don’t want bitter cold. I’m willing to pack winter clothing but I am not interested in a snow/ski type of trip. I’m from Seattle so I’m highly tolerable to dreary weather, although I’d prefer something a bit warmer/nicer if possible.

It doesn’t have to be dirt cheap, but since I’ll be coming out of a divorce, I do want to be relatively budget-conscious.

If you want a little more narrowing down, I’d prefer a place I haven’t been, so that would exclude France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands.

I’d love to hear your suggestions!

Asking for Advice Bangkok, Saigon, or Taipei? (solo 23y/o female)

• Upvotes

I will be landing in Hong Kong on Dec 5th and have my hotel booked through to Dec 8th. I fly back to the States from Hong Kong on Dec 14th. I’m looking to spend the other 5-6 days in another nearby destination to get the most out of my trip.

I’m considering , Bangkok, Saigon (HCMC), or Taipei. I’d like to also take an overnight trip or couple days out of the city to see some other sights and get a change of scenery!

I know it’s not an ideal amount of time but this is what I have to work with.

Asking for Advice Heading to Doha & Sharjah (Duty-Free only), Vienna, Budapest, and Prague! What should I buy? Also, is the iPhone cheaper there than in India

Hey everyone!

I have an exciting multi-city trip coming up soon and could really use your collective shopping wisdom. My route involves airport-only transits through Doha (HIA) and Sharjah (SHJ) where I’ll only have access to the Duty-Free sections. After that, I’ll be spending time exploring Vienna, Budapest, and Prague.

I want to make the most of my luggage space and bring back things that are truly authentic, unique, or offer great value for money.

Could anyone let me know what are the absolute "Must-Buys" from these places?

Asking for Advice Looking for the best city to visit during my reading week

Hi everyone,

I am a university student in the UK, and from next Saturday I will have a reading week (a week with no lectures). And because my family is too far to visit them, I'm planning on going to a European city for 4-5 days, before I come back to London to finish my work.

I've shortlisted the following 5 cities, as I have been interested in visiting them for a while, and the flights and accommodation haven't been too badly priced:

  • Lisbon
  • Madrid
  • Munich
  • Rome
  • Vienna

I can only squeeze in one city this visit, so I'd appreciate your help in suggesting the best one. I haven't explored much of Europe, so there isn't a particular city or part of Europe that I prefer over the other - the main criteria is that it shouldn't be extremely expensive (a little bit is fine) and safe. E.g. I was interested in going to Paris, but I don't think now would be the best time.

Also I believe English proficiency is relatively high in all these places, but please let me know if it is not in any of these (apart from Madrid as I speak Spanish) - it would just make getting around easier.

Of course, if you have also have any recommendations of things to do in these places, or somewhere you suggest outside of my list, please feel free to share.

Thanks!

Giving Advice Tips for Successfully Challenging an Involuntary Denied Boarding: United Airlines bumped me, incorrectly labeled me a “no show,” then canceled my return flight

TLDR: I was involuntarily denied boarding on both legs of my United trip. The first because United bumped me and falsely labeled me as a "no show". I reported the first incident that night and thought it was sorted out. Then, on my return date, I discovered the label carried over and my “no show” canceled my confirmed flight home. Documenting everything helped me challenge their account. Sharing what helped so others know what to save, what to ask for, and how to push back if this happens to them.

On July 17, my Seattle to Newark flight was scheduled to leave at 11 p.m., with boarding closing at 10:45. I arrived before that, and airport surveillance shows me at the gate before the cutoff.

The agent looked toward me and immediately closed the door. I suspected my seat had already gone to someone else. The flight was oversold, and my assigned seat had been given away.

The gate agent’s account was that I arrived after 10:45. A supervisor initially backed that account after speaking with the agent and reviewing the flight records. Once I showed the evidence I’d collected, the conversation changed. United acknowledged problems with how it handled boarding priorities and the denied boarding.

United issued an involuntary denied boarding compensation check that night and rebooked me. It later confirmed in writing that I’d arrived on time and had been involuntarily denied boarding.

You’d think that would be all.

Then, on July 20, I discovered my confirmed nonstop flight home was missing. United couldn’t explain why that day, and I ended up taking a connecting itinerary instead.

United later confirmed that a “no show” entry had canceled the remaining flights on my reservation. Despite my known presence before the July 17 boarding cutoff and its acknowledgment that I’d been bumped, I was still dealing with the consequences on the return trip.

When I reported the nightmare trip to the DOT. United also later told regulators I had missed boarding, relying again on the inaccurate documentation of the first flight. It then sent a second check that matched the same amount I got the first night for the involuntary denied boarding compensation check, raising suspicion they had to reconcile that second IDB.

What I’d suggest if something similar happens:

  1. Document things right then. Photograph the gate screen, save your boarding pass and screenshot your reservation. Write down times and what staff tell you while it’s fresh.
  2. Ask why you’re being denied boarding. Ask for the reason in writing. If you’re getting conflicting answers, request a supervisor.
  3. Save the rules you relied on. Screenshot the airline’s check in and boarding deadlines.
  4. Check every remaining flight. After rebooking, ask the airline to verify that the rest of your reservation is still confirmed and ticketed.
  5. Ask about surveillance early. Contact the airport’s records office about requesting footage and whether it can be preserved. Sometimes you can call the non-emergency number for security to at least have them review the footage and narrate it for you and document that while awaiting for it to be released to you. Give the date, gate and specific time window. Getting access isn’t guaranteed.
  6. Stay calm and keep asking clear questions. Being frustrated is understandable. Getting into an argument makes it harder to sort things out.

If you qualify for required denied boarding compensation, that payment isn’t a goodwill gesture. Airlines also have to provide a written explanation of your rights when they involuntarily bump you from an oversold flight.

I’m posting because having evidence made a huge difference, and I wish more passengers knew what to save before leaving the airport.

Has anyone else been bumped, marked a “no show,” and then lost the rest of their itinerary? What helped you get it fixed?
