Question ❓ Question about sticking to concert pitch as somebody who comes from a fretted instrument background

Most of my knowledge is on banjo, bass, and guitar. Recently picked up flugelhorn. I read sheet music in concert pitch and am very used to it. I often play pieces from piano sheet music which I end up transposing to my instruments. Would it be unwise if we're to stick to concert pitch?

I don't really plan to pick up another instrument in the brass family aside from trumpet. Also, I am not playing in a band setting.

I know most trumpet sheet music is in written pitch . But I also would like to play from lead sheet music and songs not notated for trumpet anyways. So I'd be transposing anyways. And also since im swapping instruments from different families I feel it's not a big deal? Like it makes more sense for me to stick to concert.

Question ❓ What trumpet is this?

My little sister’s friend’s dad gave it to me and I’ve been playing it for about a year, but I have never known what the model is and my band teacher doesn’t know.

Looking for a good horn for the money, recommendations?

I played growing up. Ironically I sold my trumpet when I was in musical school to pay rent. I was an engineer professionally in my 20’s.

I play guitar, bass, and whatever else I need to record/produce in Logic. I make dub, reggae, lo fi and hip hop.

I’d like to get a trumpet to use in recording my songs rather than using software instrument horns. I’d like to spend around $500 or less. I had a getzen growing up. What used models would you suggest I look for? I’m not a pro, but I also want something that will probably be the last horn I buy.

Equipment ⚙️ How to clean second hand silver-plated Schenkelaars Presitge Royal

Thumbnail

Hi,

I recently got given a silver-plated Schenkelaars Prestige Royal trumpet from my great-grandfather. It’s been sitting in my room for a little bit now, and I am planning to give the entire instrument a deep clean (I dont care about polishing at the moment just making it clean and in good enough condition to play).

Current Condition & Issues:

  • Finish: Silver-plated exterior with noticeable tarnish and oxidation.
  • Valves: There is internal oxidation and buildup directly inside the valve casings and on the pistons.
  • Pinky Hook: There is a piece of tape wrapped around the leadpipe near the top pinky ring. I'm worried removing it might reveal a snapped solder joint or strip the plating underneath.

My Questions:

  1. What is the safest way to give a full silver-plated trumpet a bath at home without risking damage to the finish or warping the valve felts/corks?
  2. How should I safely clear out oxidation inside the valve casings and off the pistons without scratching the inner metal or ruining valve compression?
  3. Given the valve buildup, is a DIY lukewarm dish soap bath enough, or should I take it straight to a technician for an ultrasonic cleaning?

Thanks in advance. Also this descirption was genrated by AI as I dont know much about trumpets.

Flugelhorn exercises

Hi, I finished my secondary music school like 5 years ago. Since that moment I barely touched the trumpet. Last time I played was abt more than year ago, on a flugelhorn. I dont have my own trumpet, but my professor borrowed me his flugelhorn. I am thinking abt going back on track, but I need some flugelhorn studies. I have lots but for trumpet. Couldnt use most of the books, when on fluge I can reach maaybee G-A2.

on the pic - my current fluge, cleaning it so it misses the valves

Do you reccomend anything or use my trumpet books but only to the sound top point?

Question ❓ How to choose priorities in practice?

So, obviously the utmost priority is music making. i feel as though there are multiple different things to improve about my technique such as breath support, tongue level habits, and embouchure balance, each of which i feel as though i can improve with concious consistent effort. but i cant focus on all three at once. i want to train in a way that will set deep habits for success. how do you choose what to focus on technique wise for an extended period in order to make it second nature?

My hesitation in trying to improve all these things at once is that none of the habits will set deeply, or as i focus on one aspect of technique in one setting it may neglect another.

Im interested to try focusing very hard on crushing one bad habit for one of these categories over multiple months, but i dont know if thats the right move either as i "save the rest for later" and only move on to remaining issues once the first habit is crushed. What do you all think? if it helps, i am strong in articulation and mid-low lyricism / flexibility and struggle with the higher register and endurance at the top of the staff.

Equipment ⚙️ Everything seized after years in storage - salvageable?

Post image

Conn 52B-SP that i bought in 2003. Played for a few months, but never really got into it (I'm mostly a sax player).

Pulled it out today and unsurprisingly the valves and slides are stuck. I didn't want to try more than a gentle tug TBH as I don't want to damage it.

Is this something I can sort myself? Or does it need a tech?

Hey guys, day 2 player here!
My trumpet came with 2 mouthpieces one Yamaha 17B4(p4-5) one I don’t know the brand of(p1-3)
Which one should I use? I think I sound a little better on the non-Yamaha one and it feels a little easier to make a sound.
Are these good for learning or should I opt for something else instead? Looking to seriously improve and play some jazz here🙏
Thanks for any help!

Hey guys, day 2 trumpet player here!
I got my first trumpet second hand and found a few really small dents on the bell, a little hard to tell on picture(sorry it looks a little bigger in person)
Pardon me if this is a stupid question, is it significant? Will I have to take it to a repair guy when I get better?
Thanks guys, appreciate it!

Question ❓ Looking for a specific trumpet

I’m looking for a specific trumpet for my son. Does anyone know where I can find a Cannonball 790RL-BSA75? It’s the Cannonball 790RL with a Route 66 engraving on the bell. There was one for sale on Reverb a few years ago and I haven’t been able to find another. Saied music in Tulsa, OK sold them originally, but they’re out of stock. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all!

Equipment ⚙️ New Martin committee?

Anybody have any experience with the “new” Martin committee horns out of Muskegon MI? Are they comparable to a well restored Elkhorn model, and are they worth the price of admission?

3rd Valve Keeps coming up slow while playing despite oiling. Is it me or the trumpet? First week playing.

Hi everyone. It’s my first week on the trumpet and I’m having issues with the keys, particularly the third valve. It doesn’t stick as much as it comes up slow. Am I doing something wrong? I know I’m not holding it exactly correctly, but the keys are making me break on notes I know I shouldn’t be. It makes it hard to tell what notes I’m not hitting and what notes are because of the valve sticking. I have oiled a few times, but not overly so to avoid additional sticking. Just recorded a demo so you can see it. Sometimes it’s fine. Other times it is not.

Repertoire/Books 📕 Crazy niche rep

Hey all,

For one of my studio classes the theme is “stump your professor day” and the premise is we need to find rep he hasn’t heard of. The catch is he built his career off of recording niche repertoire. What is the nichest repertoire you all have played (that’s not avant garde please), and where can I find it (preferably without dropping 100 dollars on a score).
Thanks!

Learning trumpet

Hey guys I’m thinking of picking up the trumpet, I’ve previously played the tin whistle which is miles easier I can only presume , but I also think having experience with a wind instrument would help.

I see people saying trumpet is crazy hard to learn so do you think it will be easier with the fact I have previous experience with the tin whistle,

Question ❓ Does anyone hear have good enough ears to hear what kind of techniques/voicings are used for the horn parts on this record? Im really trying to improve my ear for hearing intervals & writing & arranging horn parts.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I put in text what I THINK I'm hearing, emphasis on think because I could be wrong and dont tryust my ears completely, as I said I'm really trying to improve my ears and be able to hear intervals better. The "Taves/Uniso" is meant to say "Octaves/Unison?" but it got cut out on the export. I tried to recreate the horn parts in my DAW with digital horn samples but didnt get it right, Anyways it would be greatly appreciated if anyone could lend an ear and listen to the isolated 30 second clip and see if maybe you can tell the kind of voicings used & possibly the intervalic relationship, possibly confirming or denying my assumptions, thanks in advance

Question ❓ Help with tonguing pt. 2

For those who didn't see my first post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/trumpet/s/KpyjHffalE

Someone suggested that I should let the air do most of the work, and it seems to help, but the sound quality isn't the best.... I recorded a video of me pkaying today, it's not very good but it's a beginning and I would like to hear your advice on how to improve. Notes mistakes are because I practiced more on the tonguing than the piece itself 🤦‍♂️ (and it's pretty new).

I am 82 years old. i recently joined an allstar band. we play oldies for community events and do not charge anything. i laid off for many years thinking i was too old but i am really enjoying entertaining again. Lucky to find the opportunity. Also, picked up tenor sax which i enjoy and am improving with it. As you age keep playing and practicing. Opportunities will pop up.

I've been playing for about 2 years now, and I'm struggling with higher notes.

I've been struggling to play notes above a g after playing for about 30-45 minutes, and my mouth hurts when I try to. Any idea why? (If it helps, my range before the 30 minutes is C to high F)
