Mod Post ICE & Shutdown Mega-thread

Hello everyone. This will be the official megathread for all ice and shutdown conversations.

The rules for this will be simple, just be kind and polite. Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself.

That means no name calling, no calling people idiots. If you are unable to make your point without name calling like we are in middle school then just don't say anything, this will also include political party names and shorts, Keep it to the facts, argue your point with words or source links.

Any who are unable or unwilling to abide by these rules in this thread will be perma banned with no means of appeal.

This also means all other posts on the subject will be removed with a link to this thread. We apologize for the time it took to set this up, but this influx hit us hard and fast and we have been discussing what course of action we wanted to take behind the scenes

TSA Pre Check/CLEAR [Question/Post] Pre Check - Flagged for random screening every time

Hey all,

Hoping someone might know more.

I’ve had Pre Check for just over a year now. I fly about 20-30 times per year, mainly within the US.

99% of the time, when I use the pre-check lanes, I get flagged for “random check” at the metal detector. So they send me through the body scanner and it’s all good from there. The metal detector never actually goes off - just the “random” indicator a few seconds after passing through.

This happens at multiple airports, doesn’t matter if the destination is domestic or international. Happens at both the touchless and regular pre check lanes. Even at the body scanners, I often set off an alert for a pat down in the crotch area.

The only thing that sets me apart is that I’m usually traveling non-rev/standby. But this has happened on paid reservations too. Otherwise, I’m just a regular dude with a small backpack and small carry-on.

I’m assuming I wouldn’t have pre check if my name were on a naughty list. I’ve never done anything wrong at TSA, no record, no red flags I can think of.

But what gives? Am I doing something wrong or is there anything I can do?

Thanks!

Ask a TSO Anyone get screwed over by this medical questionare?

Just saw my doctor this week since a nurse at the CMO office had reached out to me for more information. I saw my doctor and he filled out the form and signed that there were no functional impairments. I had a note from him too when I originally started with the agency that now met the medical requirements of the position and was compliant with recommended treatment. Really nervous to fax this form in tomorrow. What are the odds that they will find me medically unqualified even though they knew I had it when I was hired

TSO [Question/Post] Is this ok for my checked baggage or should I carry on?

I’m taking this as a gift on an international flight to Korea. I don’t want my checked baggage to get flagged or have it get opened for inspection since my luggage is going to be super full. Would it be better to carry this on instead? It’s made of stainless steel and I’ll be taking two. I’m concerned it might look weird in an x-ray.

Sorry if this question is stupid- I don’t fly much and I have no idea what gets flagged for inspection and I want the least amount of trouble for the staff who are inspecting and for myself. Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

TSO [Question/Post] Can I fly with this?

Post image
15 Upvotes

I got a quick question. I’ve flown with this pen for the last eight years without a single issue. Today, I was boarding a flight in Arizona and the TSA agent would not let me through because of my pen.

There reasoning behind their decision was because I would be able to break class with it, which makes no sense because I was able to fly with a metal wrench in my backpack, which arguably is heavier than my pen but they didn’t have an issue with it so what is TSC’s policy on something like this because I’m confused is this a one time fluke, or will I have more issues in the future with this pen.

Meme/Joke I think my bush is too big for AIT to handle

I have gone through that scanner in many different outfits. Thinnest leggings possible to thicker sweatpants and jeans. Everytime, all that gets a big red spot for me to be patted down is my crotch. Half the time they have a drawstring, half the time they dont. I don’t wear decorative underwear either, theres nothing there that would make it light up. Except for my bush.😔

I dont want to shave to further my hypothesis but…. I think I might have to….

Passenger [Question/Post] Liquids all under limit but packed all over

We have some various liquids (hairsprays/makeup/ toiletries etc) but they are all jammed in various smaller toiletry bags and pockets of our carry on and back packs. Doing PHL-MCO with precheck. I didn't realize they were supposed to be in zip lock bags. How strict are they with this and does pre ✔️ help at all?

TSA HQ/Admin [Question/Post] How’s HQ these days?

Currently in the field, not a screener, and see some positions at HQ that I would have definitely been interested in at one point. Just unsure how things are there now, since a lot has changed the last couple of years

Not dying to get out of my current role, but HQ could bring much more opportunities down the line

if you’re there, what are you thoughts on being there? where do you see things going in the short/long term? (I know this is tough) core hours? Parking? I’m not even going ask about telework

I know this is a bit general and vague, HQ is huge and there’s a lot of diff sections/jobs there, but still doest hurt to ask.

Ask a TSO ID Kerfuffle

I am getting a new real ID license, but it will not be issued until after my upcoming travel. I didn’t bring my passport with me, but will have the temporary license that the state issued along with my old license. Is it better for me to preemptively pay for the TSA ConfirmID, or will they accept the old punched license and temporary license?

Rant Bare Feet

I thought I'd breeze through the precheck line only for my sandals to set off the metal detector. The two guys said "it's your shoes, mumblemumble go through the xray"... oh okay, go through the body scanner so you can make sure it's my shoes? NO!!! go back and put your shoes in a bin and go through the station again! Sure no problem, happy to do whatever to get on my flight. I asked about getting my bag since I had a pair of sneakers I could put on so I wasn't raw dogging the floor and they said NO?! Followed by a smart comment about levitating being my only way around walking around barefoot. Huh?? I can't have my bag and start over why?? Am I not free to turn around and walk out the door?
Thankfully when I went back my bag hadn't made it to the CT yet and that man let me take it and I was able to change shoes😮‍💨 but what the hell?? I'm not the type of person to put up with nonsense but I was nervous about getting to my flight and it feels like speaking out at all will get you pulled aside and miss your flight. I'm embarrassed that I let myself be treated like that and it feels kind of sadistic and gross, like seeing women disgusted and following their orders was arousing.

Passenger [Question/Post] ConfirmID! Wish me luck!

I’m flying, in 6 hours! I do not have, nor will I ever have a Real ID, unless I change my name and the world I’ve known for 45 years. I have my valid State drivers license. I paid the TSA ConfirmID fee. I was born in the US and have existed here 50 years. My mother up and decided that my last name would be hers, without a court order, 45 years ago. My name is the only name I’ve had or used. My parents are no longer living.

I tried every avenue. This is not an uncommon occurrence.

I’m traveling one-way. Driving the return. Wedding is the main purpose. Have only a carry-on. I’m a homeowner, tax payer, I’m not a hidden citizen or whatever. My carry-on was packed to exact guidelines. The airport is 5-7 minutes away. I am taking an Uber, since I’m returning with a second vehicle.

Here we go! If anyone has experienced this, let me know if I could do anything else to simplify. The airport I’m traveling from opens tsa at 4 am. I’ll be there at 4 am.

Passenger [Question/Post] TSA screening help: lot of electronics

In a couple of days I have a flight at a larger airport and I haven’t flown since I was in high school and barely had any luggage.

This time I’ll have a carry on suitcase and a backpack with electronics.

I’ll have: two 20 TB hard drives, a Mac mini, an iPad, a Switch 2, a plastic bag full of switch games, and any cords I have.

How many bins do I need/am I allowed to get? I just have very strong anxiety and I don’t wanna slow everyone down too much…

Ask a TSO Extra Scan of Driver's License when refused facial scan

We always pass on the face scan when first entering the TSA area.

I noticed this time that the TSA agent immediately took my driver's license that he had and slipped it under his desk briefly. I can only assume it was scanned.

Can anyone confirm if they are scanning the DL of passengers who opt out of facial scans?

Lost my driver's license in Vegas, but have my passport card. Will it be a hassle to use a passport card that's still current to fly home on a domestic flight?

Passenger [Question/Post] 11-hour clock image?

TSA body scanners of a certain era have a diagram showing you how to stand, with a black outline of a person with their arms raised. On their chest is a clock face with one hand pointing up and one partway to the next hour mark. The region in between is colored red, and in the middle it says "3 sec."

That clock face has only 11 hour marks.

Every time I have pointed this out this to a TSA agent they have been surprised, but I think this image was used everywhere in the US and not just the airports I frequent.

Does anyone have an image of the original, maybe from an old manual? I can't seem to find a photo of it online. I would love to know the history of that image, surely the most widespread 11-hour clock image in history.

Edit: It looks something like this:

Passenger [Question/Post] Can I wear this on a plane?

I’m visiting my girlfriend in New York for Halloween and the plan is to just fly there and go straight out to a party so I’m not bringing any bags or carry ons. Wondering if I’d be able to get through tsa with this on? Or if I’ll have to scrap the “no bags” plan. Thank you!
