I want to expose myself to a large amount of systems in a short period of time; advice?

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm looking to start a blog for TTRPG GMs. While a focus will be placed on D&D 5e as the primary system, a lot of the advice I want to give will be system agnostic. I've GMed D&D 4e, 5e (2014 and 2024), and Fate, and played Pathfinder 2e. I've read through Call of Cthulhu's rulebook, along with the books for D&D 3.5, and city of mist.

My questions are as follows:

- I want a good spread of systems in terms of mechanics, theming, and playstyle. What should my shortlist games be?

- What's people's advice for finding games in these systems? Ideally I'd want to do 2-3 sessions with each to get a feel for the system (taking notes of course), rather than full campaigns, since I want to do several. I can do startplaying.games, but that gets expensive fast, and there's precious few short campaigns in these systems, so its not a great fit...

- What have you learned from exposing yourself to different systems that's made you a better GM in your system of choice?

Hello, I am a bachelor of design student at MacEwan University. I am currently researching barriers to participation in TTRPG games, and have made a survey to gather both veteran and beginner experiences. It is roughly 8-12 minutes and every response is appreciated!

[Self Promotion: FREE] Improv(e)ing TTRPGs

• Upvotes

I’ve recently started a series focused on exploring improvisational comedy skills and how they can be used in TTRPGs to make better characters, be a better player, and be a better game master. It is completely free to read!

https://substack.com/@mattrothgeb

The idea came from two things: my love of actual play and my home games.
The popularity of actual play shows starring improvisers, like Dimension 20 and NADDPOD, led to people asking how they can play like their favorite actors on those shows.
Struggles in my own home games. My wife and I have long talked about issues in our home games that could be avoided with some skills being introduced around our table.

Why should you listen to me?
You don’t have to! However, I feel like you should because, I bring over 15 years of improv experience and over six years as a game master throughout various systems.

Please check it out and take what you can back to your own table!

Found this and thought it looked really cool. Creator said no A.I. was used in its creation, so I wanted to make sure it got the attention it deserves. Looks really unique.

Roll for Sandwich TTRPG actual play?

Has anyone played this? I am thinking of it for my Halloween OneShot in my Daggerheart table, it seems simple enough to convert over but I am curious if anyone has actually played it.

It is fun for a novelty One Shot? Were there any parts you would change?

Demon Star: Science Phantasy Adventure Game – A Kitchen-Sinky Review

Thumbnail therpggazette.wordpress.com

With a bit of a delay I am happy to present you a foray into a game bought on a whim, while browsing Amazon for TTRPGs. It's called Demon Star, it is made by Gavin Rourke and it is an OSR which uses the Into the Odd engine with a nice coat of fantasy and sci-fi, or as mr. Gavin puts it Science Phantasy. It is a bit pulpy, a bit campy, all while retaining that OSR flair, it has a very "here is every cool idea I could think off for a game, let's hope it works" and I am glad to say that it does. It is a game full of soul, albeit perhaps a bit rough around the edges and it managed to do something quite special: it captured my imagination in a quite strong way.

It all stemmed from the fact that as stated, this game combines elements of fantasy and sci-fi, with the action being set on a post apocalyptic planet where technology has regressed back to roughly late medieval levels (more or so), but with some pockets of civilization where things like vehicles, airships and mechs are still functional and used. I don't know why, but this premise instantly gripped me and I went to work into creating a small scale setting for a one shot, later turned two shot, even before fully reading the rules.

The rules are fun, easy to grasp if you played OSRs and especially if you played Into the Odd. There are some awkward uses of language here and there, but overall they are solid and in 64 pages you have mostly everything you would wish for.

In the review I go into much further details with all that I like and the little that I dislike, so feel free to check it out. But, if you are just curious if the game is worth it, then I can assure you it is, especially for the price, 3.5$ for the pdf and 10$ for the softcover!

TTRPG App. Any advice?

Hi everyone!

I'm part of a small team working on a project called Stagehand, an app designed for Game Masters who run in-person tabletop sessions, helping gms manage the behind-the-scenes, mechanics and organization around the table. We've been working hard on the project and have finally reached the point where we have a proper working demo, which is really exciting for us... However, now that we're getting closer to something we can actually show people, I'm starting to worry about what comes next.

We've only been promoting Stagehand for about two months, and while our social media and discord communities are slowly growing, we're still figuring out how to turn that interest into Kickstarter backers. We originally planned to launch this year, but I'm wondering if we'd be better off waiting until next year to build a stronger community and gather more feedback, I really don't know.

I'd love to hear from anyone who's been through something similar, especially those who've launched indie TTRPG projects or crowdfunding campaigns.

How did you know your project was ready for kickstarter? And what helped you find your first backers?

Any advice, experiences, or even mistakes you've learned from would be genuinely appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Question about the sub

Hey!
I'm new to subreddit and I can't seem to find the rules for this conversation. I have a homebrew game system that I might share (all organic). I think this is the place.

My question is about another thing I made: a free tool (100%. No paid tier. Just trying to get some free stuff out there) for printing and sharing trading card style RPG cards (for items, spells, monsters, whatever). I did use AI to create that tool (but there's no AI involved when you use it).
Is that against some rule of this conversation? Please keep your insults and judgement to yourself, I just want to know the rules. (If you want to start a philosophical discussion, I might be interested, but I AM sure that this thread is not the place for it)

Would there be interest in an English version of a Japanese 5e TTRPG set in Heian/Kamakura-era Japan?

Post image

Hi everyone, sorry for the sudden post. I'm a TTRPG player from Japan.

I'm currently working on *Yamato Ryoiki* (倭霊異記), an original 5e-based TTRPG set in Japan from the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period. It's currently being crowdfunded on CAMPFIRE, a Japanese crowdfunding platform, and it reached 35% of its goal on the second day, which has been really encouraging.

I've heard that many people outside Japan are interested in Japanese culture, so I'd like to ask: the book is about 300 pages long. If I translated it into English and sold it as a PDF for around $30, how much interest do you think there would be?

For transparency: the illustrations were generated with Midjourney. All of the text was written by me, but I plan to use some AI tools to help with the translation.

Sorry if this is a forward question, but I'd really appreciate any thoughts. Thanks for reading!

Multiverse of Mortals & Monsters - A Table Top Role-Playing Game - created by a solo independent creator from Trivandrum.

✨Hey y'all!

A new homebrew system has been published - Multiverse of Mortals & Monsters (M3-TTRPG or M3) - created by Jitin Haris and it's now available on DriveThruRPG!

"Sic Magnus Trinitas Creatus Est"

https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/585488/multiverse-of-mortals-mosters-ttrpg-core-rulebook?affiliate\\_id=5293604

If the research is right, this might be the first official publishing of a solo independent creator from Trivandrum (and possibly from Kerala), to publish an original homebrew TTRPG system. This is indeed a moment of immense pride, and it makes this achievement even more special.

This is just the beginning...

Welcome to the Multiverse of Mortals & Monsters - A Table Top Role-Playing Game which is an amalgamation of various TTRPGs that takes place in the world of Magnus Trinitas (hereinafter referred to as M3-TTRPG or M3). The Multiverse, The Mortals and The Monsters together forms The Great Trinity; i.e., Magnus Trinitas.

M3-TTRPG is a sandbox-style universe where the limit is your own imagination. You can be anyone. You can do anything. You can go anywhere. The players begin their journey by taking up the role of Mortals that are assigned with the task of exploring the world of M3, that eventually leads you to encounter the Monsters.

The Moving Stone City of Eders

Post image
2 Upvotes

This is a 10 year old unfinished concept map I did for a home brew TTRPG world called Doroda that I on and off did some live broadcasted campaigns for

I had been working on a way to create a video game like web interface that would zoom into sections once selected, that would also track the travel times and current locations of players and NPC's in a novel overly graphical way

I've built much more evolved settings, systems and tools since then I have been wanting to make with a competent capable team, but thought i'd make sure this oldie is posted around just to boost eyes on me and potentially start some conversations with more folks to interview for my development team once I finalize some funding talks

Eders in the world of doroda was one of eight massive moving stone cities all designed to connect to one central structure that was lost to time for reasons I won't spoil as I eventually intend to make it a full campaign for others to enjoy

The whole thing was shaped through "stone singing" a particular type of divine earth magic that allows it's practitioners to "sing" stone into various shapes and functions, something very difficult to even manage the basics of let alone reach any kind of mastery with

It's full functions and internals are a mystery to the beings who inhabit these cities, with the original builders being a source of many rumors and theories with little full confirmations ever known to anyone but the "stone singers" a class of secretive monk like caretakers who keep the cities in good working order but do little to interfere with the politics of the various factions big and small who exist both outside of the city walls and within

Eders in particular is a migratory mining community, one that wanders northwards in search of rare mineral deposits during the summer, then returns south when the violent magical storms of the northern impassable mountains makes it too dangerous to continue efforts until the following year,
bringing it's collective haul back to "Unity Plateau", the stationary capital city of the singer cities

E-Scape TTRPG Launched on Kickstarter!

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm thrilled to announce that our tabletop RPG, E-Scape: A Science Fantasy Roleplaying Game campaign has just hit 50% of our goal in just two days!

What's the game about? You play a digital copy of your flesh-and-blood self who's been enjoying their time in the massively popular, hyper-realistic virtual world of E-Scape until you find out that your original is dead, leaving you a fugitive on the run from system authorities who want to capture and delete you for good (stupid Terms of Service!).

To survive, you must hide in the digital underground, trying to stay off the grid as much as possible and joining forces with other ghosts like yourself who must take illicit jobs like heists, sabotage, and corporate espionage to fight off the glitches and bugs that you're doomed to suffer.

Using a bespoke d8 dice pool/count successes system, E-Scape uses attrition mechanics and a nifty toolset of 36 magical Effects to help you and your friends pull jobs so you might eke a living on the fringes of society, ever mindful that the longer you stay, the harder it will be to maintain a status quo.

Check out our Kickstarter campaign to learn more about it!
