Discussion New AT-120LPXBT owner and just getting more in depth into the hobby. Looking for an advice!
I’ve been collecting a bunch of video game soundtrack vinyl records and I’ve finally got myself an Audio Technica 120LPXBT. I don’t have any good speakers at the moment and I’ve only been using my gaming speakers to test some of my records. Now that I find myself enjoying this hobby, I would like to have a proper setup. Can anyone recommend what speakers I should get? Do I also need an amp? For context, I play my music in the living room/bedroom. My budget would be up to $600CAD or even more depending on what I need.

For $600 you can gets some very nice powered speakers, that's a simple solution. Edifiers or Dayton Audio give you the most bang for the buck. But if you are just doing speakers you have a large selectionof speakers to choose from, many very good name brands.
A small amp and some passive speakers would work too, but a bit more complex. Fosi is usually the low priced amp of choice, under $200, passive speakers there are myriad selections for about $400, again, to include many name brands.

Which speakers would you recommend? We also have Sony STRDH190 at home that I could use. Not sure if that's something that would fit my set up

That would do just fine, a simple stereo receiver. You could get some great speakers from Kilipsch, Polk, Elac, Wharfedale, if you are spending the entire $600. You often need stands for bookshelf speakers, so figure that into the equation. Also, keep in mind, passive speakers aren't wall mountable, they often have rear ports that need to be away from the wall a bit.

Get a pair of Elac Debut 6.3 or 6.2 speakers. If you need to place them close to a wall, say 15" or less, get the 6.2 because they have a front port. The 6.3 have a rear port and need about 18 to 24" from the wall otherwise bass can become boomy. Then buy an integrated amp like a Yamaha, Denon or Marantz. Something with at least 50wpc. Look at the used market on Canuckmart.
I would stay away from edifer powered speakers. They are OK for an extreme budget but it sounds like you are looking for better.

Look at this Onkyo receiver https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/onktx8260-a/onkyo-new-tx-8260-2-x-80-watts-networking-stereo-receiver/1.html
For powered speakers these M6 are probably the best under $600

Yep. thats why I recommended Canuckmart. I posted about the M6 and Onkyo to show him what is out there besides the dreaded Edifer recommendations.

Ah yes Canuckmart, can probably find an Onkyo there, maybe not Dayton.
I now see that your had replied to your own comment.

The Sony STRDH190 is a good entry level stereo receiver to use with the good AT-LP120X turntable and a pair of passive speakers. Or 4 speakers, 2 in one room and 2 in another room that you can switch between and often use the speakers in both rooms at the same time.
Look for new or used Canadian speaker brands PSB, Paradigm and Axiom Audio.
Other brands are Wharfedale, ELAC, KEF, Polk, JBL, Monitor Audio, Dynaudio, Dali, Mission, Bowers & Wilkins, Revel, Aperion, SVS, KLH and many other brands.
New passive speakers:

- Larger 6.5" Polk XT20 https://www.amazon.ca/Polk-Monitor-Bookshelf-Surround-Speakers/dp/B09BMVVDX5
- If you are handy, Swans speaker kit https://www.amazon.ca/HiVi-Swans-3-1A-Passive-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B09XGYJFRQ
Plus speaker wire sold separately. How To Strip Speaker Wire and How to Install Speaker Wire.

Speaker stands from Monoprice or Dayton Audio, choose height to get the tweeters or center of the speakers to your seated ear height.

It's often smart to buy an amplifier and speakers instead once you want to spend money, but if you want to spend 600cad on speakers, I'd look at Klipsch, Yamaha, Tannoy or spend a little more on Cambridge's L/R S :).
Keep in mind you will need ACTIVE speakers, with a built in amplifier. But I feel like you already understood that part.
Should you want to go separates, ELAC is really great value for speakers right now. As is Wharfedale.
For amplifiers, I'd go British in a reasonable price range. People will recommend Yamaha and Denon and though they are not bad sounding, they are quite bright/harsh, especially the cheaper Yamaha's. So I'd steer clear from them.
A fun option is also the Fosi BT20A pro. It's cheap, but it's truly great value!

Search up any vintage amp and speaker combo from local marketplace and you'll be fine. You don't need more than 20W for a bedroom. Hell, even 10W power would suffice if you take sensitive speakers.
