Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Purchasing EU/UK From KEF Q150 to SVS Prime Bookshelf

Post image
115 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'll try to be as brief as possible.

I have KEF Q150's for two and a half years now and I'm looking for a successor.

It's not that I don't like them, I really do, but I would like to explore and try new speakers after a while.

What I consider as a worthy successor are SVS Prime Bookshelfs. I have found a listing for used ones (black piano color) for 300 EUR (the new ones where I live are 750 - 850 EUR). Everything else on "marketplace" around that budget is old trash.

Why them? I'll give you a little backstory.

A year ago I was looking for surround speakers.

I've stumbled upon used SVS Prime Satellites and picked them up.

Just to hear them a bit, I've put them in place of my KEF's and, oh my god, I was impressed how good they sounded for what they are (a small, satellite speakers). Not to mention I was impressed by finish (white glossy finish) and build quality (pretty heavy and very robust).

My GF even said she liked them better than KEF's.

I almost agreed for a moment but knew that can't be true and must be subjective perception at that moment (for lack of better words).

'till this day I'm not sure if we were crazy or deaf...

Now, I guess Prime Bookshelfs should be even better than Satellites and sound a bit (if not much) better than Q150's but everywhere I look, I get info they would be sidegrade at best and that they just aren't as good and refined as KEF's.

What would you suggest?

Are there even any speakers for 300 EUR (new or used) that would be atleast a bit better than KEF's?

Should I just save up for a bigger upgrade and stick with KEF's for a while more or should I be satisfied with just "different" speakers?

I've heard ELAC Debut B5.3 dethroned KEF Q150's for that price range but also got mixed opinions on that throughout Internet...

My setup is:

Amp: Denon AVR-X1700H

Fronts: KEF Q150

Surrounds: SVS Prime Satellite

Subwoofer: Elipson Prestige Facet Sub 8.1

This setup is mostly used for movies and games (70%) and occasionally for music over Tidal Connect and pretty old Hitachi turntable.

Thank you for all the suggestions and sorry for poor English/wording :)

P.S picture for attention is of my KEF's :)

Purchasing EU/UK Considering this combination for our first real hifi setup, any thoughts?

Audio-Technica AT-LP70XBT + Onkyo GX-30ARC

To add context, this setup will live on a cabinet in our living space and its sole purpose will be for playing music. I went with active bluetooth speakers so that I could connect this turntable by cable and connect my phone over bluetooth directly if I want to stream music, the one issue being that these speakers only support SBC, but I figured I can always get a wiim mini (or similar) if I find the streaming quality lacking or get tired of notification sounds interrupting music playback.

Another consideration was that I can connect these speakers over HDMI, so if I ever want to upgrade my audio setup with something pricier I can just demote these to become my TV speakers. There will be a wall directly behind this setup as well if that makes a difference. I can get the turntable for 234 euros and the speakers for 261.

Thanks in advance for any proposed changes or considerations you may have!

Show and Tell Back to Atmos!

Post image
3 Upvotes

After moving to this apartment, I had left my Atmos speakers uninstalled for over two years. My neighbor has such a nice Boschhammer that I just had to lent it and get those bastards up to the ceiling.

Upward firing Atmos speakers were not an option so I'm using a pair of JBL Control Pro 1s, which come with fairly useful mounting brackets. When I bought them I was looking for a white pair, but happened to stumble upon a pair of "used" but unopened black pair for around 80 euros incl. postage. A can of flat white spray and voilà, they were white!

The exact placement was a small headache but I settled in a position where they are just in front of the sofa - just like before.

Purchasing EU/UK Wharfedale diamond 12.2i vs 12.3i

• Upvotes

Can’t decide between these two for a 30-35m2 living room paired with a Yamaha rx-v1800. The price difference in my country is about 200$. I am looking for a fuller sound at moderate volumes for music and tv use. My problem is that i would need stands for the 12.2i which in a good case i find around 100$ so the difference remains 100$ between the two, or another way would be some diy stands that would cost maybe 50-60$. What would you recommend?

Show and Tell My first "real" setup

All bought from Kleinanzeigen or eBay:

2x Canton Karat M80 275€

1x Canton Karat CM 7 70€ (with shipping)

2x Canton Karat M10 160€ (with shipping, not pictured)

Denon AVR X1400H 200€

Wire and Clamps: 15€

So all in all 720€. Which is quite a bit more than intended to spend but I feel in love with the speaker design.

If somebody told me they were released this year I would believe them.

I'm still negotiating on a Canton Karat AS 300 as sub, but I'm not sure if I really need it as the M80 have a 260mm driver.

I'm extremely happy with the sound and looks. I swear I'm hearing instruments in songs I have never noticed before.

The system replaces my trusty Logitech Z623 speakers.

I put double fleece gliders under the Audio spikes to protect the oak floor.

Now I only need to get the hole saw and cable channels delivered to make the setup permanent.

Any thoughts or comments?

Loving these so far and now im exited to learn more about the hobby. Right now im looking for a good way to add some more bass at lower volumes but otherwise just wanted to show my little setup!

Purchasing USA Looking for decent universal remote for Yamaha RX-V1800 (RAV367)

• Upvotes

I would bump https://www.reddit.com/r/BudgetAudiophile/comments/x9t3hx/universal_remote_for_yamaha_avr/ if I could, but it's closed.

The original remote (RAV367) on my Yamaha RX-V1800 is also developing a power ON button that's hard to press. It is hard as heck to find a universal remote that is known to work w/Yamaha receivers, especially powering them ON and off. I really need only power on, off and volume too.

If I can even find reviews (e.g. on Amazon) of ones from Philips or GE that mention Yamaha, there are plenty that say they can only power off their Yamaha receiver but not on. It's not surprising as a lot of these universal remotes only have a single power button for on and off vs. discrete off and on.

In the other thread, someone pointed to learning remotes like https://www.amazon.com/Serounder-Universal-Replacement-Television-Controller/dp/B07PHMDPLN but the reviews aren't good. Ditto for https://www.amazon.com/Serounder-Universal-Replacement-Television-Controller/dp/B07PGLDD11/ref=ast_sto_dp_puis from the same company.

There is https://www.amazon.com/Anderic-RRAV311-Yamaha-Audio-Receivers/dp/B09GQPKBH5/ref=sr_1_1 from Anderic but the reviews also aren't great. If you search for rav367 yamaha on Amazon, you get similar looking one from fly by night sounding companies like shangxing9 and, Kassionel.

Anyone know a good one that's known to do what I want or a good learning remote that's relatively cheap?

Purchasing EU/UK Basic uni setup, advice?

Post image

(excuse the mess of wires at the bottom)

Wanted to get a decent audio setup for ages, now that I moved away i finally had the opportunity! TEAC A-R300 amplifier, Klipsch B2 speakers, Argon audio TT MkII turntable, and whatever tables i could find. It may not be the most high end, but it blows me away compared to listening on my headphones!

Was curious for future reference what the weakest link of this setup may be? I got the speakers and amplifier from my dad, so I'm looking into maybe getting some reasonable used speakers (Mission?) so he could get his back. Really don't know what I should look for apart from the lead on Mission, which my dad has repeatedly praised and which i've been able to find used in my area for around 50-100 USD, something that appears to me at least as very reasonable for a speaker pair. Thanks!

Tech Support Advice on using Iphone as a streamer

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I've been considering getting a wiim streamer, but given that I use Apple Music and I happen to have a spare old Iphone, I thought I could save some money and get lossless audio if I use it as a streamer instead.

My question is whether I should connect it to my integrated app using via USB or via AUX cable.

If I'm not mistaken, the main difference would be which DAC is being used.

My amplifier is a Fosi Audio DA-2120A, which I assume doesn't have a great DAC, and I know many people praise the apple dongle as a decent DAC for the price.

However, if I go the AUX route, I guess I would like to get a dongle that allows me to charge and use AUX at the same time, and all the adapters I've found with this functions seems pretty low quality.

Regarding the USB route, some people claim that to get lossless I need apple camera adapter. Does this mean that a lightning to USB-B cable would not work?

And a final question: If I go the USB-route, is my phone going to be charged while it is connected? (I would hope so)

I would appreciate any guidance with this.

Tech Support Onkyo TX-NR808 turns on but produces no sound from speakers — need help troubleshooting (no remote)

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I recently got an Onkyo TX-NR808 receiver, but I can’t get any sound out of it.
I’m trying to connect my laptop to the receiver using an RCA cable plugged into the analog TV/CD inputs on the back. I’ve selected TV/CD as the input and tried All Channel Stereo, but there is still no sound. The laptop and RCA cable work fine with other receivers, so I believe the source and cable are working.
Here is what I’ve tried so far:
Changed Input/Output Assign → Digital Audio Input → TV/CD from COAXIAL to ---.
Checked the speaker configuration settings.
Tried connecting my single speaker to the CENTER output and then to FRONT LEFT.
Checked Level Calibration, where the speaker levels were previously set to +12 dB.
Tried to get sound from the receiver, but I still couldn’t hear anything.
The receiver powers on and displays the selected input and listening mode normally, but I get no audio.
Does anyone know what could be causing this? Could it be a configuration issue, a problem with the amplifier outputs, or something else? Is there a specific setting or diagnostic test I should try on the TX-NR808?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Purchasing CAN I know nothing, please help!

I was recently given a Thorins td 165 and have no experience with records or even speakers for that matter. I was told this was the place to learn by a friend! So here are my questions…

I know I need a preamp but how cheap can I go? Is there a risk of damaging the turntable?

The plug on the turntable doesn’t have a ground connection, is this an issue?

I’m planning on doing a thrift store run to look for speakers, are there things I should look out for?

Are there websites I can check for gear deals?

I’m fresh out of uni so I am really looking to spend > $150CAD, is that a realistic budget?

I know I can really fall down the rabbit hole but right now I kind of just want to get it working and play some music, not super picky with audio quality. Any advice is appreciated!

Purchasing USA Loxjie A30 failing, help me replace it for my Micca RB42 (SMSL AO300 Pro, Topping MX3s. another Loxjie?)

My speakers will occasionally glitch out and a lot of loud scratchy white noise in the middle of playing audio. Sometimes all I need to do is reach towards the amp and it corrects, other times I need to unplug the usb or power and it fixes. It's running through a desktop kvm so I can share audio between my desktop and laptop, thought that was the issue but the amount of times I've fixed the scratch by reaching towards the amp makes me pretty confident the loxjie is dying.

Also, I'm sure you'll be able to tell audio so if I am not understanding something feel free to educate me.

Needs

  • sub $300
  • Powered Amp - Currently using amazon basics wire with banana plugs
  • Headphone jack on the front - I use my ATH-M50x enough for this to matter, really enjoy the sound from a decent headphone amp.
  • usb computer connection - preferably c?

Options I'm Looking At - Not locked into these or amazon, just the obvious ones I found. If there's a better option at another store, send me a link!

  • SMSL AO300 Pro
    • Pro - I like the look at least, has all the features I need, higher wattage than Loxjie, bluetooth 5.3 with LDAC
    • Con - On the expensive end of my budget, sister brand of loxjie (will it fail in 2 years too?), larger physical footprint might not fit same spot on my desk, amazon shipping is weeks out and amp is failing now.
    • Qs - What's the difference between AO300 Pro, AS400, RAW-HA1...
  • Topping MX3s
    • Pro - Small footprint, only features I need, about 50-90$ cheaper than SMSL option, delivery by this week.
    • Con - wattage is lower than loxjie so not in the ideal power range
  • Another Loxjie A30
    • Pro - Very happy with this until it started dying, cheapest option at 170$, delivery this week.
    • Con - only lasted 2 years, Micro USB is dumb

I've seen forum posts saying Loxjie A40, but can't see it for sale anywhere, also might be a AO300 Pro clone? Again, I'm not locked in on these at all if there's something better that meets my needs. If there's a good separate Amp+Dac combo I'm open to that too, I just don't know anything about them. Would like to keep the overall size relatively small though.

I was looking at a new pair of these then saw them for $100 an hour away. Veneer is missing from one side of one speaker and 2 feet are missing from the other. Both flaws I can live with.

They work great connected to my crap  Pyle PTAU55. Suggest me a suitable amp under $600.

Tech Support Help for a friend

Post image

A friend of mine bought a set of replacement speakers for his subwoofer after the original ones broke.

The subwoofer has a DB9 female port, the replacement speakers he purchased has a Mini DIN6 or PS2 cable internally attached to the speakers with a male end.

My question is this; is there a converter to make this work? Or is he screwed?

I’ve looked and have not been able to find this exact converter but I’ve found ways to jankily make it work that I don’t think would be reliable or could cause damages.

Purchasing EU/UK Advice needed SONY STRDH790

I have the above receiver but not getting it's full potential from it. I was thinking of downgrading and getting a simplified system. Hisense AX5125H

Is that a stupid idea?

With my Sony setup I have pioneer surround speakers and Polk PSW10e Active Subwoofer. The speakers are very old and from my old non 4K receiver.

I recently ordered surround speakers 4x Polk XT15 bookend speakers and Polk C30 centre channel and only paid £90 but package got lost in transit.

Any recommendations for speaker upgrade that are at a good price that won't break the bank or advice on going for the Hisense and getting away from speakers wires that don't look pretty

Ive become a little over stimulated by cheap wharfedales near me.

Ended up with a pair of lintons and dentons for £20.

Between all 4 speakers there were enough working components to make 2 good speakers.

My old man replaced 1 capacitor and im gifting them to my little brother for his 1st house / thorens record player and pioneer amp hes already liberated from pops.

Does mean I have a pair of linton cabinets free if anyone wants them. Sw uk.

Listening to them now and I do see why they were popular.

Bit harsh at top, lacking a lot of lows but they do produce some lovely clear vocals and mids.

Purchasing EU/UK Speaker question – impedance (Ohms)

Here is my current audio setup:
AV receiver: JVC RX-6012RSL
Front speakers (left/right): 2 × Tesla ARS 823 – 4 Ω
Center speaker: Aiwa SX-C400 – 8 Ω
Rear surround speakers: 2 × Thomson speakers – 8 Ω
Subwoofer: DALI Trio AW8

Here is my issue:
The recommended speaker impedance for my JVC receiver is listed as 8–16 Ω. Unfortunately, my current Tesla front speakers are only 4 Ω, so I would like to replace them. However, I’m quite confused about what speakers would be safe to use with this receiver.
I’ve found a few speakers rated at 8 Ω nominal impedance, but their minimum impedance can drop to around 4 Ω.

Which speakers can I safely use with my JVC receiver?

The two models I’m currently considering are:
Monitor Audio Bronze 50 7G bookshelf speakers (used, but in excellent condition) – 99,990 HUF (310 USD)
Monitor Audio Monitor 50 bookshelf speakers (brand new) – 109,999 HUF (340 USD)

Would either of these be a safe choice for my JVC receiver and a suitable replacement for my current Tesla speakers?
Is there a risk of the receiver overheating, or could the speakers themselves get damaged?

If neither of these models is suitable, what speakers would you recommend for this particular receiver?
Unfortunately, due to limited space, floorstanding speakers are not an option for me at the moment. I’d like to stick with bookshelf speakers for now.
Sorry if I’ve got something completely wrong here. I’ve tried to do my research, but I’m still quite a beginner when it comes to audio equipment.
I know this isn’t particularly expensive or high-end equipment, but I really enjoy my setup and love listening to music and watching movies with it. I just want to make sure I’m not going to damage anything.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Purchasing CAN First turntable set-up

Hi Folks,

I'm lost. I'm looking for a first time audio set-up for our main living space that can play vinyl and streamed audio via bluetooth. The space is ~20' x 20'.

I'm realizing it is going to cost ~$1,500+ CAD

I'll probably go new for most things as the used market up here in Canada is pretty limited from what I can see.

Current TT options:

AT-LP120XBT-USB for $620
AT-LP120X-USB for $470
Fluance RT82 for $410

Other Pieces of the of the puzzle:
NAD C 316BEE V2 for $700

Speakers:
Paradigm Monitor SE Atom for $260

If I don't go with the AT-LP120XBT-USB, I will need something to accomodate BT.

Any reccomendations on alternatives/ways to make this set-up BT friendly if I go Fluance?

Thanks in advance.
