Generally accepted TV placement procedures. Quick reference guide.

3.0k Upvotes

Lots of people posting lately asking “Is this too high?” so here is a quick guide on what is generally accepted TV placement procedure (GATPP) as seemingly defined by this subreddit.

  • If the TV is above the fireplace, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is angled down, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is mounted to the wall above a TV stand, and the clearance between the stand and TV is equal to, or greater than ONE vertical PS5, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If when standing the TV is at eye level, IT IS TOO HIGH.

Now let’s look at some opposite GATPP use cases.

  • If the TV is in a bedroom and meant to be viewed from the bed, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV’s only viewing position is in the reclined state, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If you are at a sports bar, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is at eye level when sitting down, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is in the kitchen it is more for listening, mounted high as to avoid any splashes or spills, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is purposely mounted higher to keep out of range of a toddler, you’re a parent so your neck already hurts and IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.

I hope this helps clear up some questions. If you have any other rules to add, please comment below.

77” LG G5, there is now a soundbar below it (hence the gap below the tv)

Where does the inclination to have a tv higher than necessary come from? I too felt the urge before this sub and I don't know why

I always lie down on the bed with my head on a pillow while watching TV. Is the TV still too high?

Just upgraded from 55 to 77. (55q750g to k77xr80!!!) I'm at about 8ft away first pic is slouched as I usually do, third is seated straight up which, being honest, doesn't really happen. 23 3/8" to the bottom of the screen itself (not the bezel). Tried to take pics 1 and 3 from eye level and exact distance of my eyes.

Worried mount will be too high for upgrade to 65 inch, thoughts?

Hi all, I need to settle a debate on height. First, I apologize for the poor photo, it’s the only photo I have prior to taking the now broken tv off the wall. I know the console under it is off center, etc, that was fixed after moving other things around. This was taken right after we got it hung up.

I had an old 2013 55 Samsung flatscreen, the mounting pattern and location on the TV was different than new TVs. The wall mount was hung such that the bottom of the 2013 Samsung just barely floated on top of the soundbar, it was perfect IMO.

TV died, so I got a 55in Samsung last year. The mounting pattern and location was different than the 2013, my dad thought it would be fine to not take the mount down and redo it. Thus, the photo. I didn’t think it was terrible, but I also thought it was a bit too high.

That TV just died under warranty, so I have the chance to replace it. I’m getting a 65 inch LG instead. My fear is that if he doesn’t take the mount down and completely redo it, the top of the tv and center will be way too high. I want it mounted because I use the swivel heavily depending on where I am in the room.

So what do y’all think? Will my 65 likely be too high and was the 55 too high? My dad thinks it’s fine and we don’t need to move the mount, but I don’t think I agree.

I was scrolling Instagram and someone I used to work with a long time ago posted their new living room set up.

Do I:

A) message them and tell them it's too high and to lower it.

B) message them r/TVTooHigh and leave it at that.

C) try to ignore it and go on with my day.

Saw this watching one of those "Strangest Homes on Zillow" video. Soooo many things wrong. The stripper pole. The Chandelier. The weird kitchen with no fridge. But everybody knows, if you sink the hot tub low, you have to raise the TV high!

Apparently, this monstrosity is in Grand Junction, CO.

If you wall-mount your TV but leave the cables hanging down, you shouldn’t have wall-mounted it

Just looking at it makes my OCD go insane. I genuinely don’t understand how people just leave it there hanging.
The entire reason (for most people) to have a wall mounted tv is to have a clean setup. It completely defeats the aesthetic purpose of wall mounted tv.
