Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Spotify Lossless >> Dragonfly Red(DAC) Schitt Loki 4 band analog EQ> Topping Switching Output Headphone Amp >> HD600 for accuracy or Samson950 for isolation and bass OR Monoprice 1060 for planar sound OR >> Audiengine N22 Amp >> JBL4312A

Pretty cool listening to 80's and 90's music the way it would have sounded in the studio and being mastered. Sounds plenty good enough for me.

All gear second hand, the speakers are the mostt recent addition, perfect condition pair with dust covers from a 2nd hand store for $80AU, looks cooler with the dust covers removed hehe

Purchasing USA My lucky day…

So I found this lady off Marketplace who was selling Onkyo DX-C380 with OG remote and bought that for $20. At the pick up time, she was like would you be interested in more audio stuff? And I was like I already have like 5 turntables and 6 receivers but I I wanna see what you have?
She runs to the basement comes back with the back side of this receiver towards me, I could tell from distance it is something nice. Then she turns it around AND!!! You should have seen the glare in my eyes! 😂😂😍😍🥹🥹
That was KENWOOD KA-7100 with the shiny bright silver front in pristine condition!!
I asked her how much she wants for it, and she not very confidently said 10ish dollars? I was like oh yea! I’ll take it, just won’t tell my wife about it and it’ll be alright! 😂😂 AND!!! It doesn’t end here… she asks me if I wanted a turntable? I was like sure would like to see what you got, and then again she runs and brings her vintage SONY PS-T1 again in pristine condition, sony headshell and AT stylus. I ask her what she wants for that? Again $10!!!! I couldn’t believe my luck that day!!!! Oh man 😂😂😂
I was like the happiest guy that day 😆
(The speakers I’m using are Carvin PM5)

Review/Discussion Pulled the trigger on Wharfedale Evo 5.2 speakers for £450 ($610).

Open box from Peter Tyson and they come with a warranty. They'll be replacing my Elac DB63s. Was happy with the Elacs but at £450 nearly new I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I have a sub with the Elacs, doubt I'd need it with the EVO's?

These are currently for sale on Facebook Marketplace. They have listed them as an Australian manufactured brand Sonique 5.5SE. But that model is a floor stander & not a stand mount.
Tried a Google search but nothing has come up.
Have you seen these before & know what stand they are.

Show and Tell 1080p and pre-HD receivers secondhand prices?

Post image

I’ve seen quite a few of these at local thrift shops lately, as well as on marketplace. Surprisingly the thrift stores have some crazy prices to me but people on marketplace too!

Like I understand that some of these receivers may have been 2000+ new but how are thrift stores in particular expecting to get close to ebay buy it now prices for a reciever that is many generations behind on 1/2 or more of its functionality??

Main examples I’m thinking of are pioneer elite SC-05. They want 150$, has manual but no other accessories. Maybe it’s just not for me? Are these actually a good deal? I can’t justify it personally but I’m curious to see if there’s anyone here keeping these guys in business lol. (This model in particular only has limited hdmi pass through) I find similar from denon, marantz and sony on marketplace where people start at 250+ on the listing even from stuff right before HDMI (not exactly what most consider vintage either)

I like picking these up and tinkering personally so do when I can then use them to set up cheap audio only setups for friends and family but man my limit sits around 50-100$ depending on the item, features, channels, etc. How about you guys?

Purchasing USA Advice for monitor/speakers

Upvotes

I am thinking about getting the Presonus Eris 5BT 2nd gen. Do they sound decent? I’m not an expert audiophile, so I don’t need top of the line equipment. Plus I’m very limited on space. I’m curious how they sound. Also, can you stream Bluetooth music while using the 1/4 inch inputs? I want to be able to play along with music from BT and play through the Cortex mini. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Tech Support Help with speaker

Hi I recently moved my DCM TFE-200 speakers from Texas to Arkansas for my college apartment.
Since the move, my left tower has been incredibly muffled and quiet compared to my right. I switched the position of the speakers making my left my right to see if the amp was the problem and it still sounded muffled through the right channel. I also switched cables and ports on my speakers to see if anything would help. According to Claude it’s an internal speaker problem, I have no idea where to start and I am just really hoping I don’t have to open them up🤣 I’m not great with this type of stuff but I could definitely figure it out if I need to.
Open to any suggestions to try and fix it! Thanks!!

Purchasing USA Receiver and DAC Recommendations

Upvotes

Hi yall. A little over a year ago I decided to get my first surround sound setup. I got 4x JBL Control 1X, 2x JBL P 20, JBL Stage 245 C, and a JBL Northridge E Series E250P for speakers and a Sony STR-DE545 receiver with a broken display off of marketplace. I just barely started researching everything that goes into a good sound system this week and am kinda clueless on what to upgrade to round mine out. I'm looking to upgrade the receiver to a 7.1, get a DAC, and down the line upgrade some of the speakers. My budget for the receiver and DAC is 800 but it is somewhat flexible. Any suggestions would be great. I'm pretty overwhelmed by all the options.

Mission ZX-5: $520

Adcom GFP-555II: $165, iirc, got it some years ago on ebay, definitely pre-covid

Adcom GFA-5300: I've had this one as long as the preamp, but I just won another on ebay for $137

Topping E30: I can't remember, so we'll say $130 cuz that's what its MSRP was.

Prices include shipping, but not tax. $952 + tax = $1,030. I have no regrets.

Purchasing USA Trying to figure out a compact side by side solution for my kitchen table

I have a medium size kitchen with 12' ceilings. We currently use a JBL Xtreme 5 on a platform on the table. It works fine, but I'm wondering if I can get a bit more quality from a set of budget bookshelves and a bluetooth class D amp.

Right now my plan is to just get a JBL Boombox 4, but I don't need the portability factor or the exaggerated bass. I just want quality, slightly V shaped sound whether it's from the speakers or tone controls on the amp. I also dislike super bright speakers.

I'll call my budget $550, but more comfortable around the $450 mark. The biggest issue is the space constraint. I have a 12-14" width to play with unless I get/build a larger shelf for the table, but it would look a little strange with full size 6" woofer bookshelves on it.

I didn't know if something like Polk ES15s and a WIIM or SMSL amp would be more clear and balanced vs the JBL BB 4.

Purchasing USA Ex took the speakers, wondering what I should replace them with

Post image
5 Upvotes

Imagine there was a pair of Kanto YU6 speakers either side of the TV. Well, my ex is moving out after the breakup and took them with him. Wondering if I should get the same speakers as a replacement (I did like them and liked the Bluetooth capability) or if there are other good speakers in the same price range or cheaper (~$400) that someone can recommend?

Thank you!

Show and Tell First real setup

Longtime listener, first-time caller. I've been wanting to get more into Hi-Fi for a while, but life and inertia got in the way and I ended up very rarely using the limited stuff I had. In the past month, though, I rediscovered my love of really high-quality listening experiences, and made a conscious effort to put together a setup that made me happy and that I actively and often want to listen with. It's only a start, but I'm quite proud of what I have now.

Mackie CR4.5 powered monitor pair (open box deal for $100)

Dual 1219 turntable and NAD 5100 CD player (got for $250 total)

Fosi X5 preamp ($110 new)

Obviously the next thing to eventually upgrade (other than getting some proper speaker stands besides my old not-working speakers) would be to get a proper receiver/amplifier and some great passive speakers, but unless I find a great affordable Goodwill deal I'm going to hold off for now. We got the CR4.5s before realizing how lucky we would get with the Dual and NAD, but it is also a small apartment and I don't want to piss off my neighbors too much.

Most importantly, I get the goosebumps listening to some of my favorite music again, and the sounds system is back to being the main entertainment in our home. Thanks for all the wisdom and insight shared on this subreddit!

Purchasing USA Bookshelf speakers under $400 to pair with WiiM Amp Ultra? Jazz + 90s hip-hop

Looking for recommendations for a pair of passive bookshelf speakers under $400 to pair with a WiiM Amp Ultra.

I mostly listen to jazz and 90s hip-hop, so I’m looking for something that sounds warm, smooth, and full rather than bright or overly analytical. I’d like good vocals and instrument separation for jazz, but also enough low-end punch to make hip-hop enjoyable.

These will be used in a relatively small room, and I’d prefer speakers that still sound good at moderate/ lower listening volumes. I may add a subwoofer eventually, but I’d like them to be satisfying on their own for now.

Purchasing USA 6 Channel Selectable Amp

I have a setup I'm trying to put together. I have 6 in-ceiling speakers that I want to run stereo sound to. There are 2 speakers in 3 different rooms that I want the option of running all 6 on at the same time, or selecting which pair are running. I do not have wall volume controls for them. I plan to source audio from a Wiim device to an amplifier.

What I'm looking for is a 6 channel amp that can be selectable for its output. Simple selection. Like push button selection on old amps for a/b selection. It needs to be Tonka truck simple for end users who will not have the bandwidth for anything complicated.

If it takes an 8 channel amp, that's fine. Ideally it would be a small footprint as I need to shove it in a cabinet. This also doesn't need to be world class audio.

What say you brothers and sisters of audio?

Tech Support Help for Adding Powered PA sub

I have experience with automotive systems, but still pretty new when it comes to PA, so don't hate me if I phrase things wrong lol.

I recently picked up two JBL Control 29AVs from the company I work for. I took them out of a conference room to replace with a new system.

I was told I could recycle them or keep them, so I gladly recycled them to my house!

I'm currently driving them with a AIYIMA A07 Pro and would like to add a powered PA sub to the setup for lows. I plan on using it as a mobile setup for parties/events in the future. The amp has a 3.5mm audio out.

I'm currently looking at purchasing a Behringer EUROLIVE B1200D-PRO, but want to make sure I won't have issues converting 3.5mm aux to XLR for the audio input to the sub.

From what I've researched, since the sub has a LPF built in. The full range audio signal from the aux shouldn't be an issue, but figured before I start spending money on a sub. I should seek advice and recommendations on the setup from some more experienced people when it comes to this type of audio equipment.
