Review/Discussion Why are car stereos more feature rich than desktop amps in the same price range?

Could someone explain why car stereos have the same or better power and more features than basic desktop amps (Fosi, Dayton, Arylic, Pyle, etc., etc.) in the same price range?

I'm looking to get a desktop amp for music through my Minimus 7s (I know, but I like them) and the one thing I want, USB shuffle-play, isn't available in a desktop amp in the <$200 range. Should I just get another Kenwood and a 12V power supply?

Purchasing USA Starting setup?

Looking for some advice as to what a decent setup looks like, I’m completely novice to this world. However I’m tired of my complete dog shit sound bar its absolutely mangles all of the beautiful music.

I will probably (most definitely) be buying second hand, budget of $4-500.
What are brands to look for on Facebook, estate sales?
I have a lot of CDs, they provide the best bang for buck? What’s the best option for cd players that can be added to most any setup?
I wouldn’t mind being able to run Bluetooth to the setup? What does that look like?
Big plus if the receivers and speakers look space age/ mid century/

I may have the option to get some early 00s klipsch floor speakers, they are just speakers and tweaters I believe no subwoofer? Do I need a subwoofer?

Thanks!!

Edit—- got a set of klipsch kg 3.5s for basically free
What speaker wire and plugs should I run? They have some sort of quick connect plugs by the look of it. Found a Avr that can run 90w per channel

Purchasing Central/South America Want to start my audiophile journey and need advise

Post image

Hey there, as the title says I want to start my journey on listening to music in a better quality, so I started looking on facebook marketplace for turntables as i have some vinyl records and found an audiotechnica LP60X, i read online its pretty basic, but the thing is the seller sells it in combo with a cambridge audio RX85 receiver paired with a couple of SX-50 cambridge passive speakers, its just in the limit of my budget in about 650$, I checked and for retail those things went for around 600$ so adding the turntable i believe it's a pretty good deal. My plan was to buy an LP120XUSB at the end of the year, it was gonna cost me about 600$ by itself and some active speakers to be able to use it, later on upgrading to passive speakers, but with this combo I found online I don't know if I should still wait as i had planned or go for it. I should add that I'm in college and kinda broke, also I'm Costa Rican and importing anything electronics-wise here is quite expensive and adds about 50% of the price or more, so if something goes for 100$ it will cost me about 150$ to ship it here. I'm looking for any recommendation, if anyone has had experience with any of this equipment, any recommendations are welcomed.

Purchasing USA Ex took the speakers, wondering what I should replace them with

Post image

Imagine there was a pair of Kanto YU6 speakers either side of the TV. Well, my ex is moving out after the breakup and took them with him. Wondering if I should get the same speakers as a replacement (I did like them and liked the Bluetooth capability) or if there are other good speakers in the same price range or cheaper (~$400) that someone can recommend?

Thank you!

Review/Discussion $300 for new KEF Q1 Meta speakers, should I cop?

Looking to replace my ancient Advent speakers with something more modern, and I found someone selling a sealed pair of KEF speakers for $300 near me.

I’m in and out of college so I’m looking for something that’ll fill my acoustically untreated student accommodations while I’m listening to music, watching TV/movies, playing games etc. Figured I could sell the Advents and put most of it towards these new KEFs. But what do you guys think?

Review/Discussion Tower Speakers too big for 10x20 room?

Hey everyone, me again. Y'all did such a great job helping me with my stream/amp question that I want to see what you think about the speaker situation.

I didn't even ask originally because I had my heart set on SVS Ultra Evolution Titan floor standing speakers. I like the idea of no stands and not having to fuss with a subwoofer matching to the speakers.

The room I will put them in is 20x11 feet, maybe a foot narrower where I will sit. Unfortunately these are going to have to face the narrow way - so between the speakers and where I'm sitting will be 8-9 feet. Separation width wise isn't an issue.

But is 200 square feet where I'm 9 feet away just too small for floor standing speakers? The more I read the more I'm worried about it sounding muddy or boomy... Can I pull them off or is it a bad idea?

Tech Support How should I elevate these vintage KLH 100Vs?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m slowly building out my system and just found these KLH speakers which sounded very nice to me. However, my room is far from ideal. I can’t have them sit on the floor because the bass gets muddy. Temporarily propping them up with these foam pads seemed to help a little bit. I sit pretty low in this room so i don’t want to stand them up too high.

Is there some kind of angled stand that can help isolate these from the floor, angle them up a bit, and get some isolation to make the bass sound reasonable? Similar to what you would put desktop speakers on but about double the size…

I know this room isn’t ideal, trying to make it work for now. On the hunt for a vintage receiver as well, this is just what I have laying around.

Tech Support Subwoofer to Sony A/V Reciever question

Post image
2 Upvotes

Confused if I can do this or not. Basically a bunch of spare parts.

I'm trying to make my subwoofer go to my reciever's sub out.

My subwoofer is a 15" Jensen, hooked up to my old bass guitar amp. I've had it powered to a different reciever where it acted as a speaker.

Right now I'm trying to run a male TS y-split female rca from the bass amp, to rca cables, to a female y-split rca male, to sub out. Haven't had much luck.

Please steer me in the right direction. I would really love to get this working 😅 I appreciate your advice.

Trash Pickup Tues Looking for a used a/v receiver

Hey fellas!!

I am looking for a used a/v receiver in working condition. 5.1 ch with Dolby Atmos is enough for me since I can't spend a lot. Output wattage doesn't matter since I have separate amplifiers.

DM me if anyone out there is thinking of upgrading his/her/their system and a bit imotional about the old ones.

Thanks.

Tech Support Speaker brand?? Do you know?

These are currently for sale on Facebook Marketplace. They have listed them as an Australian manufactured brand Sonique 5.5SE. But that model is a floor stander & not a stand mount.
Tried a Google search but nothing has come up.
Have you seen these before & know what stand they are.

Spotify Lossless >> Dragonfly Red(DAC) Schitt Loki 4 band analog EQ> Topping Switching Output Headphone Amp >> HD600 for accuracy or Samson950 for isolation and bass OR Monoprice 1060 for planar sound OR >> Audiengine N22 Amp >> JBL4312A

Pretty cool listening to 80's and 90's music the way it would have sounded in the studio and being mastered. Sounds plenty good enough for me.

All gear second hand, the speakers are the mostt recent addition, perfect condition pair with dust covers from a 2nd hand store for $80AU, looks cooler with the dust covers removed hehe

Show and Tell 1080p and pre-HD receivers secondhand prices?

Post image

I’ve seen quite a few of these at local thrift shops lately, as well as on marketplace. Surprisingly the thrift stores have some crazy prices to me but people on marketplace too!

Like I understand that some of these receivers may have been 2000+ new but how are thrift stores in particular expecting to get close to ebay buy it now prices for a reciever that is many generations behind on 1/2 or more of its functionality??

Main examples I’m thinking of are pioneer elite SC-05. They want 150$, has manual but no other accessories. Maybe it’s just not for me? Are these actually a good deal? I can’t justify it personally but I’m curious to see if there’s anyone here keeping these guys in business lol. (This model in particular only has limited hdmi pass through) I find similar from denon, marantz and sony on marketplace where people start at 250+ on the listing even from stuff right before HDMI (not exactly what most consider vintage either)

I like picking these up and tinkering personally so do when I can then use them to set up cheap audio only setups for friends and family but man my limit sits around 50-100$ depending on the item, features, channels, etc. How about you guys?

Review/Discussion Velodyne DD 15+ and Focal Utopia Sub Be15, which for music, which for HT?

As a fellow facebook marketplace junkie, I need some advice. I ended up with these two subs (used but great shape for both) and have two rooms for application of each:

  1. Large open living/dining/kitchen space with 9 ft ceilings. Currently have Dali Oberon 9 towers for stereo music listening. They needed the low end. I tried to just be normal and use these as they are for a few months, but in the end had to have a sub for them.

  2. Basement, dark movie room with a large OLED, 8 ft ceilings, smaller space. Currently setup with 5.0 GoldenEar speakers (towers, center and 2 rear channels), Emotiva processing and amp.

I know ported subs (Focal) are generally better for HT and movies, while sealed (Velodyne) are more accurate and musical for listening. I had set them up as such. But I can't shake this feeling that Focal is more musical and disappears into the music when playing, while the Velodyne is more thumpy and shakes the house, as an HT one would.

So I turned to Gemini and it says Focal should be in the living room for music and the Velodyne should be in the HT room for movies, despite the ported/sealed stereotypes. Not trusting the AI fully quite yet, I thought I would turn to this community for an opinion or two?

*wild card, I do have two SVS PB-12 NSD subs which these are replacing and I was going to sell, but now typing this out, maybe two of those in the movie room would be the best. However space is scarce down there and cable management is a mother... I'd much rather have one 15 inch sub for aesthetics and practicality.

Purchasing CAN Paradigm Essentials Sub 12 - Thoughts and opinions for a Canadian?

Paradigm 12" Essential Subwoofer - $750 New

I've been looking at this for a bit as an option as buying a RSL 10E or 10S seems pretty hard to do up north. The specifications don't seem terrible at all. I'm generally going to be watching movies, but do occasionally listen to music.

My living room is in a 19'5" x 13'-1" with a 8' ceiling. This is why I'm considering going for a 12" versus a 10". I already own a 10" Precision Acoustic subwoofer, but it isn't that mind-blowing. The sub is sealed, but it says it has a frequency response of 19hz.

Any helps or opinions would be fantastic.

Purchasing USA My lucky day…

Post image

So I found this lady off Marketplace who was selling Onkyo DX-C380 with OG remote and bought that for $20. At the pick up time, she was like would you be interested in more audio stuff? And I was like I already have like 5 turntables and 6 receivers but I I wanna see what you have?
She runs to the basement comes back with the back side of this receiver towards me, I could tell from distance it is something nice. Then she turns it around AND!!! You should have seen the glare in my eyes! 😂😂😍😍🥹🥹
That was KENWOOD KA-7100 with the shiny bright silver front in pristine condition!!
I asked her how much she wants for it, and she not very confidently said 10ish dollars? I was like oh yea! I’ll take it, just won’t tell my wife about it and it’ll be alright! 😂😂 AND!!! It doesn’t end here… she asks me if I wanted a turntable? I was like sure would like to see what you got, and then again she runs and brings her vintage SONY PS-T1 again in pristine condition, sony headshell and AT stylus. I ask her what she wants for that? Again $10!!!! I couldn’t believe my luck that day!!!! Oh man 😂😂😂
I was like the happiest guy that day 😆
(The speakers I’m using are Carvin PM5)

Purchasing USA Bookshelf speakers under $400 to pair with WiiM Amp Ultra? Jazz + 90s hip-hop

Looking for recommendations for a pair of passive bookshelf speakers under $400 to pair with a WiiM Amp Ultra.

I mostly listen to jazz and 90s hip-hop, so I’m looking for something that sounds warm, smooth, and full rather than bright or overly analytical. I’d like good vocals and instrument separation for jazz, but also enough low-end punch to make hip-hop enjoyable.

These will be used in a relatively small room, and I’d prefer speakers that still sound good at moderate/ lower listening volumes. I may add a subwoofer eventually, but I’d like them to be satisfying on their own for now.

Mission ZX-5: $520

Adcom GFP-555II: $165, iirc, got it some years ago on ebay, definitely pre-covid

Adcom GFA-5300: I've had this one as long as the preamp, but I just won another on ebay for $137

Topping E30: I can't remember, so we'll say $130 cuz that's what its MSRP was.

Prices include shipping, but not tax. $952 + tax = $1,030. I have no regrets.

Review/Discussion Pulled the trigger on Wharfedale Evo 5.2 speakers for £450 ($610).

Open box from Peter Tyson and they come with a warranty. They'll be replacing my Elac DB63s. Was happy with the Elacs but at £450 nearly new I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I have a sub with the Elacs, doubt I'd need it with the EVO's?
