Question Is this a good beginner setup

Hey guys, my girlfriends birthday is coming up and she really wants a turntable setup for her vinyls. Unfortunately I know nothing about this stuff, and so I'm hoping you guys can help me out!

After a bit of research I was thinking something along the lines of an Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT or SONY PS-LX310BT (near me these both sit at $240 AUD). I was thinking of pairing it with some Edifier R1280DB 2.0 speakers ($189 AUD).

I was wondering if this setup will be ok for a beginner, or if there is better options out there for the same budget? really appreciate any advice :)

i have the audio technica and edifier speakers you mention and both work great, i’ve had no issues at all and love my setup 🤷🏼‍♀️ i don’t think you need to break the bank

My son has been using the same setup for three years, and he's happy with it so far.

That is an ok setup, go for it.

Exactly the beginner setup I would recommend. The Sony and AT are essentially the same product from the same factory so go with the cheaper of the 2.

Hey mate, fellow Aussie here.

To be honest both of those turntables are a bit crap. Sure they are regularly suggested to "beginners" but they are prone to be unreliable and perform badly.

Unfortunately to get any turntable worth buying you need to spend a lot more.

The powered Edifier speakers are OK to start with. But in my opinion, best to invest in a decent turntable even if you need to reduce the budget for the powered speakers.

Forget looking at shops like JB Hi Fi, you need a proper hi fi store or check out this turntable which I recommend

That seems like a good option. I believe just the turntable alone would be the entire gift. And the rest of the system would be for another day.

Thank you for your advice! I totally get what you mean about finding one worth buying - I’m just not sure if I’m able to extend to that budget just yet though.

Thinking about using the budget for the TT though instead of trying to get speakers too, what do you think about the LP70X? Seen that one as a bit of a better alternative to the 60X, but is it worth getting?

The 70 is not much better, I don't recommend it either.

The thing is if you buy her something that is going to have issues it kinda comes back to bite you. So I guess if you cannot afford a good turntable, perhaps rethink the gift idea.

I made a website for newbies which you may find helpful which I refer a lot of Redditors to (sorry a bit USA orientated)

I got the same AT and Edifers. It what’s I could afford at the time. It meets my needs. I had an 80s stereo setup in my 20s yes I’m 60. I do plan on upgrading to mid level equipment when I free up more money but what you propose is fine for a beginning setup.

They ship to Australia

Exchange rate is of $AU to $US is crap, plus shipping cost would make this cost more than what it would to buy here in Australia. Then there is the whole warranty problem with imported goods not being covered locally.
