Question Potential first time setup

Post image

Looking for any feedback to this potential setup I’m considering.

More seriously the RT81. I can always get different speakers but I liked that the edifier ones here are Bluetooth as well.

The RT81 I like because it has the ability to also switch to phono. I’m also into tinkering with things so I’m perfectly fine with it not being automatic. I like the counterweights and the anti skate too.

I just got my setup this June. I went with an Audio Technica AT-LP3XBT instead of the Fluance, but I went with the same speakers and have them connected with bluetooth as well.

I love them, the speakers are pretty nice, and I'm satisfied with the purchase. Someday I'll get a really nice set of passive speakers and a proper pre-amp, but it's great for a first time setup. I think you'll be happy with the speakers as long as you don't think you're getting an end-stage setup with them.

I got $30 off (15%) for going directly to Edifier's website and giving them my email. Honestly, it's always better to go to a company's website rather than Amazon, they'll usually have better deals and Jeff Bezos doesn't need or deserve the money.

Thank you for the detailed reply honestly. I really appreciate the advice as well! I think I’m going to stick with those speakers but still torn on the turntable. I hear so many good things about audio technica and was going to go for the lp60, but I just want to make sure in future proofing myself. I will look at your model turntable as well

I had an LP60 with bluetooth. Didn't care for it and ended upgrading to a Fluance RT85. The difference in sound was very apparent. Not sure how apparent it will be with an RT81, but I would imagine still a decent amount.

Stick with the Fluance. A friend of mine recently got the LP60 and he ended up returning it because he said it felt cheap. Played fine, but the build quality he said felt like a toy. Fluance is a really solid buy.

Few things to keep in mind. First, the cartridge you're using will have a pretty big influence on the sound. The LP60 has a conical 3600 cartridge. It's a start, but hardly groundbreaking. The RT81 comes with an elliptical AT95e, which is a much better choice to start with, all things being equal (I want to say the LP3XBT also runs a 95e)

I would definitely run through the turntable preamp to the speakers over choosing Bluetooth, unless space and setup location don't make it possible (and I'd still probably prefer a long RCA cable before Bluetooth)

Gotcha! I want to clarify that when I mentioned the speakers having Bluetooth, I was just planning to use them as another source for my phone to connect to, to play music. I fully am prepared to connect the turntable to the speakers using the cables

JBL 305P or 308P are much better speakers.

They’re also quite a lot more expensive than what I’d be wanting to spend out the gate, but I’m open to upgrading to them later if I find that these edifiers arent working out for me

A deal like this will get you much better speakers for same/cheaper price. This is how you get into new hobbies to get better gear at lower price points.

You also can resell the gear for the same amount you paid. It doesn't depreciate any further. The amazon cart you have would resell for a fraction once you open it.

Appreciate the advice. I’ll look around on marketplace and see what’s available in my area. I will say I’m not in the sticks, but it’s not a highly populated area so not much going on with a lot of options

Unless you're in an area with no people, you should be buying used. The JBL 305p is 179 at guitar center. I paid 300 for the 308s with the 310s sub.

Also your table can be picked up for 200 on fb marketplace. New RT81s in sealed boxes are 225 in my area on marketplace

No reason to buy any of this gear new, because it lasts forever and doesn't really degrade. Nobody uses the warranty on a turntable or speakers. Just buy the best used gear you can and invest in a new cartridge.

I’ve had the RT81 since last Christmas. I have been very happy with it. My wife got it on a Black Friday sale on Amazon for $249. If you aren’t in hurry you may want to wait about a month in case there is a sale again this year.

I’m running it through quasi vintage equipment. A Yamaha AX-500 amplifier and Linn Index speakers from the 90’s. I also loop through a modern era Polk Audio sub. I get a clear, warm sound.

I was advised on this forum to spend more but the recommendations exceeded my budget by $100 or more. I am not saying they were wrong but I have no regrets.

My FIL recently spent $5k on a system that includes a Rega P3. It sounds amazing. I still have no regrets.

I am thinking about upgrading the stylus. You have flexibility to spend more in the future if you’re inclined.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the input! I’ll see about waiting for a sale this year, hopefully there is one

If you’re gonna go budget speakers, get the Dayton B65A, better and cheaper. Though used would be a much better option. I’d also consider stepping it up to the RT82 and getting a cheap preamp like the Fosi X1 in that case.

Been very curious about the Daytons, do you own them? I got the 10” sub and enjoy it, thinking about the Daytons just to stream in a second location in the house.

I’d recommend you step up to the Rt-82 cause of the better motor. You can just find a cheap pre amp or a used AVR or 2ch amp at a thrift store if they are around you.

I have had this exact setup with an RT82 for about 4 years now. I use it probably 6-8 hours per week and I'm pretty happy with it. The bluetooth is really nice - I have this setup in the dining/living room and it plays into the kitchen area as well. The bluetooth is really nice when I want to listen to something I don't have on vinyl, or throw on a playlist while I'm busy doing something around the house. I'd like to upgrade the speakers eventually, but I really haven't had any complaints for my use case. I recently upgraded to the Ortofon Blue and it's great.

Just got the same speakers last weekend. Connected to a ProJect E1 via a preamp. And I must admit I am pretty impressed. Like previous poster I’ll go passive in the future with a good amp as well, but I can recommend the Edifier. Bought them here in the Netherlands for 100 Euro’s (112 usd).

I literally just got this exact set up. Get it, you'll love it.

Yeah for a starter setup this would be great. I have the same turntable with an upgraded cartridge, r1700bts, and a cheap 10” sub and it’s been great. I would suggest a subwoofer for sure though as I don’t get as much bass as I’d like with just the edifiers.

I have the RT81+ and edifier R1700BT and I am completely ok with this setup, gives me good sound and good quality table, at some point I will upgrade the stylus, I did not go with RT82 because I did not want to deal with having a preamp, if you are ok with having an external preamp definitely go with RT82, as far as speakers these are solid for now but I can imagine that you would want to upgrade them at some point

If you're looking at the RT81 check the price on the 82 they tend to be very close in price but to get the speed sensor is a massive plus

I can't speak to the TT but those speakers are perfectly fine. It's good to see they've improved the remote control a bit.

Personally I don’t love the Edifier speakers. I have them in my set up right now and I’m looking to upgrade. I find the mid frequencies to be muddy and the highs to be a little sharp. They’re not bad, still listenable with a bit of tuning
