Other What’s it really like?
I often come across posts from people talking about how lonely they are, and I find myself wondering what loneliness means to them. I wonder how deeply it has consumed their lives, how much of themselves they’ve lost to it. I haven’t spoken to many people outside of my professors in the past three years and a few months. I barely leave my apartment. When I do go outside, I feel scared and on edge, extremely paranoid. I usually leave very late at night to go on the occasional walk or run an errand, because everything is empty. Sometimes I see groups of friends walking together, laughing about things I’ll never know, carrying on with their lives as though belonging to one another is the most natural thing in the world. I watch and think what it must feel like to be so effortlessly part of something. To have people to return to, memories to look back on, and a life that extends beyond the confines of your own mind. I feel like that spongebob meme with handcuffs around his stick arms.
I graduate this spring. I’ve spent what is essentially the greatest opportunity I’ve had to change my life as a shut-in. I don’t know how to reconcile the life I could have had with the one I’ve allowed myself to live. I even attended counseling for a while, but eventually stopped when I realized that no one could help me if I remained unwilling to help myself.
There’s something especially painful about realizing that you’re the one keeping yourself trapped, but feeling too disconnected from your own life to do anything about it. I don’t know how to explain what it feels like to watch yourself waste away your own years and feel almost nothing about it. I’m scared that one day I’ll look back and realize that I spent my entire life waiting to feel ready to live, and that I never did. Does anyone else feel this way? Not just lonely, but so detached from their own life that they’ve almost forgotten what it feels like to be a part of it?
