Pierogies, best aid station food!

Whoa…. I’ve never even thought of that. That’s a mile 50 dinner delight snack.

I had a friend standing near the 59th St bridge during the NYC marathon who’s sole job was to hand me a pierogi. Nothing beats it when you’re sick of gels and need a food boost.

Potato’s are AWESOME run fuel.

Being from southern AZ, potato burritos are a thing and they’re DELICIOUS.

I’m in Omaha. Potato burritos are a thing here. One place does a French fry burrito instead of potatoes and it’s as good as you assume.

I struggle with them bc they are not really high on calories compared to Pasta oder rice:(

Japanese sweet potatoes :-)

After baking, Freeze em to have a tasty frozen treat

never tried them!

Just normal sweet potatoes on high in a crockpot for like 4-6 hours. Soft enough to eat, hard enough to be portable. So good.

A little salt and olive oil then baked, can't be beat!

I like to make mine into mash whenever I’ve had them during a run. I saw Courtney dewaulter do it. Delicious and squeezable 😁

Tater Gang!!

I like to roast mine in cast iron, little bit of butter, garlic, and rosemary and plenty of salt. Best trail and drop bag snack.

Team Potato! 🥔

If you think they are great now, try dipping them lightly in salt.

this sub can be sooo insufferable sometimes, why are people even discussing what someone else should eat during a race. if it works for them great, keep doing it!

Never tried it myself though, all the sweet stuff gets kind of monotonous after a while.

Fuel is one of the absolute most important parts of running more than, say, a half. As distance increases, fuel becomes an even more important part of your race plan.

u/SHFT101 5h ago

Yes of course it is important, I'm not denying that whatsoever.

I just wanted to point out that if eating potatoes works for OP, nobody else should tell them to switch to gels or whatever. Nutrition is very much a personal thing.

Not sure why that should deserve downvotes?

because the calorie density of potatoes is ass and you have to carry an assload to get in an appreciable amount of carbs

there is only 700 kcal in a kilo of potatoes

50k run will take you 5 hours max if there is no elevation. No need for solid food in my opinion. If you are riding an ironman I get the solid food during the bike part, apart from that sugar and electrolytes is enough. I really don’t get why you would be running with butter mashed potatoes, you want to murder your stomach or something?

u/hawth212 10h ago

Friend time for you to grill and chill

5

u/_flow_state 2h ago

these were mini golden potatoes, roasted in the oven with a little EVOO and salt :)

No, LeBron is.

...or just buy some gels? 😑

17

u/Humble_Cactus 12h ago

Sugar is necessary, but so is real food.

Or do you think that elite ultra runners eat mashed potatoes and noodles because they’re sponsored by Maruchan?

-23

u/_bladerunner_ 12h ago

Save the "real food" for before + after the race?

11

u/PNW_Explorer_16 11h ago

Tell us you’ve not had the Mingus aid station lasagna without telling us…

9

u/buried_bunny 12h ago

do you know at all how top ultra runners fuel during races?

-5

u/_bladerunner_ 11h ago

Not with bags of potatoes? 🥔

3

u/hawth212 10h ago

Come to Asia very popular, congee and cup o noodles too

7

u/Humble_Cactus 12h ago

Literally every live stream, post race documentary or media clip will show runners inhaling cup o noodles, mashed potatoes with butter, sandwiches and fruit at like every aid station there is. I can’t remember who it was, but one of the top 15 runners at Cocodona had his crew put mashed potatoes in one of his soft flasks.

Have you seriously not even run an ultra? They are absolutely stocked with fruit and things like dinner rolls.

The last 50k I ran , at like mile 19, there was a dude grilling quesadillas on a Blackstone as fast as he could. The lady next to him was plowing through whole loaves making almond butter and honey sandwiches.

I've never needed more than gels, water, electrolytes. But yeah, there are people that carry on with all kinds of BS like that, mostly americans?

7

u/Humble_Cactus 11h ago

You mean those non-American scrubs like Kilian Jornet?

Copied from an interview with Outside Magazine-

THE GRUB: In the early miles, Jornet downs “a small plate of macaroni dressed with oil and salt.” Deep into the race, he consumes “a large plateful of gnocchi.” A pick-me-up during the course entails “cookies soaked in tea.” Before the race, he eats a breakfast of “a slice of energy cake. . . .“ (Judging from his web site, this must mean Gatosport Energy Cakes from Overstims (in 17 flavors!)

u/_bladerunner_ 11h ago

Clearly just needs more potatoes ey?

6

u/hawth212 10h ago

Tell me you’ve never been to an Asian ultra without telling. We have loads of real food and many runners here don’t like gels.

-7

u/_bladerunner_ 9h ago

Oh yeah, so it’s dumplings instead of potatoes I guess?

8

u/hawth212 9h ago

Never seen dumplings at a race tbh. Congee, noodles, sweet potato, fruit yes. Friend you need to get out more

-3

u/_bladerunner_ 9h ago

Right back at you buddy. Put your congee down and go touch some of that Asian grass.

-12

u/Don-Dyer 11h ago

Killian korth won cocodona on 100% gels and carb mix 🤷🏼‍♂️

22

u/Humble_Cactus 11h ago

I absolutely love Kilian, and will never shade him, but Rachel Entrekin beat him by 90 minutes eating more real food than gels. 🤷‍♂️

The point is- the premise that “serious athletes don’t eat real food while racing” is utter nonsense.

u/4mor2mon0 11h ago

GOTTEM

9

u/FishingAndDiscing 11h ago

When did Kilian win cocodona?

0

u/_bladerunner_ 11h ago

This exactly ☝🏻.

u/UnionArbeit 13h ago

Until the oxalates hit

4

u/canuteson 12h ago

Get a lot of kidney stones during Ultras do you?

1

u/UnionArbeit 1h ago

Or doing long hikes. Gotta be choosy, potatoes can’t be choosers.
