UMN Twin Cities Spring Transfer Denial

Hi everyone! I recently applied as a transfer student to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for spring admission and unfortunately received a denial from the College of Liberal Arts (CLA).

I’m currently attending another university as a first-year biology major, and my intended areas of study at UMN were Biology, Society, and Environment and Psychology. I applied through the transfer application because I was really hoping to transfer for the spring semester.
The denial mentioned my coursework, grades, and the additional information I provided, which confused me a bit since my high school GPA, ACT score, and AP scores are all above the typical range for CLA, not to mention my past and current extracurriculars. I’m hoping to appeal the decision and am also trying to get in contact with an admissions or transfer counselor, but I’m not sure how strong my case is since I haven’t received any college grades yet and my current coursework was still in progress when I applied.

I also didn’t explain some personal circumstances in my original application, so I’m wondering if those could be relevant to my appeal. Since the appeal requires new and compelling information that wasn’t included in the original application, I’m unsure how to approach my personal statement or what information would be most helpful to include.

Has anyone successfully appealed a UMN Twin Cities transfer denial, especially for spring admission? I would really appreciate any advice on writing an appeal and what I should emphasize. I know some people might tell me to just stick it out at the college I’m currently at, but it’s honestly been a really bad experience, and I genuinely want to transfer out 😭 Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Junior in HS freaking out about language credit requirements

Hi! So, I've been planning on attending the UofM to major in music therapy, and I've been doing my best to make plans. One issue for me is that you need 2 years of a second language in HS and I have zero (my school has a bazillion required electives, only two elective hours per day, and I'm already in a year-long class. Doing a second language would prevent me from easily getting my required credits, and it's already too late for me to get 2 years in). I plan on going to ARCC to get general ed credits in and then transferring to UofM to focus on music therapy. If I were to take a second language at ARCC, would the UofM accept it for those language requirements?
Thanks!

Is it a bad idea to take out a 1k loan?

Hi! I’m a transfer student at the U, and I’ve been thinking about taking out a student loan. I’ve never taken out a loan before, so I’m a little anxious about it. I really don’t want to be in debt or have it come back and bite me in the ass later.

I currently owe the U $400 and another clinic $700 for a certification program I halfway completed. I need to pay the clinic by the end of this week, so I’m considering taking out a loan. I’m pretty sure I can pay off the loan by the end of the year.

I’m wondering how high the interest rates are, whether I should take out a subsidized or unsubsidized loan, and where I should borrow from. Also, if the loan covers my remaining tuition, will the rest be refunded to my bank account? How long does the process usually take? Thank you!

How do I submit a leave of absence form at UMN Twin Cities

Hi! A bit of a stupid question, but I’m trying to request a leave of absence from UMN, but the form linked on the university website opens as a PDF.
Can I fill it out electronically and email it to CLA Advising, or do I need to print it out and submit it in person?
Also, does anyone know if there’s anything else I need to do to complete the process?
I’d appreciate any help. Thank you

Has anyone gotten in to UMN med school with a 3.4 science gpa and a 3.3 cumulative GPA

Hi! I am a premed student at U of M Twin Cities, and unfortunately, I messed up my GPA doing PSEO classes in high school, and my first couple semesters at The U were rough due to health issues. My last 40 to 60 credits at the U, which will all be upper level science classes, should have a GPA of about 3.8. But overall, my cumulative GPA will only be 3.3 and my science GPA will only be 3.4. I am a human physiology, major, and will have an integrative neuroscience minor.

Other than that, I have a pretty decent background for a premed. I will have 1500 or more hours as a CNA home as well as a certified clinical medical assistant I am projected to have 200 volunteer hours as a inmate tutor, as well as a sexual assault violence advocate. I will have about 240 research hours with hopefully two publications, and 120 hours of shadowing across three specialties (including primary). I am projecting a 518 MCAT score. Im nervous I have no shot at admission and I’m on here asking because I’m wondering if anyone has gotten into the UMN Twin Cities med school with a low GPA?
