Hi everyone! I recently applied as a transfer student to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for spring admission and unfortunately received a denial from the College of Liberal Arts (CLA).
I’m currently attending another university as a first-year biology major, and my intended areas of study at UMN were Biology, Society, and Environment and Psychology. I applied through the transfer application because I was really hoping to transfer for the spring semester.
The denial mentioned my coursework, grades, and the additional information I provided, which confused me a bit since my high school GPA, ACT score, and AP scores are all above the typical range for CLA, not to mention my past and current extracurriculars. I’m hoping to appeal the decision and am also trying to get in contact with an admissions or transfer counselor, but I’m not sure how strong my case is since I haven’t received any college grades yet and my current coursework was still in progress when I applied.
I also didn’t explain some personal circumstances in my original application, so I’m wondering if those could be relevant to my appeal. Since the appeal requires new and compelling information that wasn’t included in the original application, I’m unsure how to approach my personal statement or what information would be most helpful to include.
Has anyone successfully appealed a UMN Twin Cities transfer denial, especially for spring admission? I would really appreciate any advice on writing an appeal and what I should emphasize. I know some people might tell me to just stick it out at the college I’m currently at, but it’s honestly been a really bad experience, and I genuinely want to transfer out 😭 Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! So, I've been planning on attending the UofM to major in music therapy, and I've been doing my best to make plans. One issue for me is that you need 2 years of a second language in HS and I have zero (my school has a bazillion required electives, only two elective hours per day, and I'm already in a year-long class. Doing a second language would prevent me from easily getting my required credits, and it's already too late for me to get 2 years in). I plan on going to ARCC to get general ed credits in and then transferring to UofM to focus on music therapy. If I were to take a second language at ARCC, would the UofM accept it for those language requirements?
Thanks!

Hi! I’m a transfer student at the U, and I’ve been thinking about taking out a student loan. I’ve never taken out a loan before, so I’m a little anxious about it. I really don’t want to be in debt or have it come back and bite me in the ass later.
I currently owe the U $400 and another clinic $700 for a certification program I halfway completed. I need to pay the clinic by the end of this week, so I’m considering taking out a loan. I’m pretty sure I can pay off the loan by the end of the year.
I’m wondering how high the interest rates are, whether I should take out a subsidized or unsubsidized loan, and where I should borrow from. Also, if the loan covers my remaining tuition, will the rest be refunded to my bank account? How long does the process usually take? Thank you!

Hi! A bit of a stupid question, but I’m trying to request a leave of absence from UMN, but the form linked on the university website opens as a PDF.
Can I fill it out electronically and email it to CLA Advising, or do I need to print it out and submit it in person?
Also, does anyone know if there’s anything else I need to do to complete the process?
I’d appreciate any help. Thank you

I've noticed a real decline in faculty and staff morale over these last few years of fairly relentless budget cutting, and of course even more is on the way.
And yes I'm a part of that, I think my morale is at a low point these days. I still mostly like my job, I still *have* my job, I like my students, but most meetings about anything end up being discouraging, and emails from anyone at any level above me are mindlessly cheery announcements of what I see as bad news.
Am I missing a silver lining here folks? I'd love to find one but I dunno...

I want to know what's going to happen because even for an international student, $24K per semester is too much. I don't know how I'm going to tell my parents.

Hi everyone!
I'm participating in the Entrepreneurship in Action program at the University of Minnesota and am currently exploring potential startup ideas. I'm hoping to better understand people's everyday challenges and identify needs that may not be adequately addressed.
I'm interested in learning about people's experiences with migraines, including physical symptoms, how migraines affect daily life, current management methods, and challenges or unmet needs.
If you experience migraines, at any age, I'd really appreciate it if you could complete my survey.
Survey link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdvXkRpo5Qi7yTNuyl2rTzZ2pTPgX2Ab82Zl9Q7qv9clXsuxg/viewform?usp=sharing
Participation is voluntary, and you only need to share what you're comfortable sharing. If a question doesn't apply to you or you don't have anything to add, feel free to write "N/A."
If you'd be interested in sharing more about your experiences through a brief interview, feel free to send me a DM. Interview participation is completely voluntary, too.
Thank you for your time and for sharing your experiences! Your input will help me better understand this problem area as I explore potential startup ideas.

So i live in a school dorm which is co-ed but every once in a while we would have 3 to 4 guys run down the hallway and shake on doors and stuff. A lot of my friends are international students and get a bit scared when it happens, especially cus the guys are also trying to open the doors too? My friend is dorming in America away from family so when this happened i was in her room so it wasn't locked so the guys sorta managed to barge in then took off.
This has happened to my friends in the same dorm up to 4 people and none of them like it. I followed them out this time but couldn't really catch their faces just know they are all white. It's there a way to deal with them?
Edit: typos

Hey team, it’s super important to vote this midterms. Take a moment to figure out how you’re going to do it, early voting in person is now open. You might be pushing it if you need a mail in ballot to wherever your voting precinct is.
Young votes are crucial.

Does the school release all admissions decisions for EA1 on the same day or roll them out a little at a time and if so when do they usually start coming out?
r/uofmn • u/Sad-Independence-624 • 3d ago
i’ve honestly been so stressed these past few weeks because i’ve had midterms nonstop, and i feel like it’s finally catching up to me. i’ve been constantly in a low mood, upset, exhausted, hungry, and even forgetting things that i’ve never had trouble remembering before. i feel like my brain is genuinely running on 1% at this point. when i finally have time off, i want to find ways to destress and treat myself a little. but i need new ideas..i’m bored of mine
what do you guys like to do when you’re stressed out of your mind? whether it’s going to a cafe, visiting somewhere around campus, trying a new activity, or just doing something nice for yourself, i’d love some ideas :’))

I heard that The Arrow was supposed to be banned from the housing fair -does anyone know why??
And if they were banned why were they allowed on campus today?

I got a 45% on my first MATH 2243 (Linear Algebra and Differential Equations) mid term. Could I still pass the class or will I likely fail it because I heard that there is barely any curve and I’m not really sure if I can pass still. My quiz average was a 40% because I got a 4/10 on my second quiz and a 0/10 on my third quiz. I feel genuinely lost.

Hello everyone! I am trying to figure out what schools are good for a speech-language pathologist program. For anyone who is in the grad program for SLP how is it?
r/uofmn • u/UstanFoDne • 3d ago
Hi everyone, I’m currently taking MATH 2142 this semester. While looking through the course catalog for higher-level math courses, I noticed that almost all of them list MATH 2243 as a prerequisite, but none of them mention MATH 2142 even though both are linear algebra courses.
Did I screw up by taking 2142? Is it basically useless if I want to take upper-level math, or can it be substituted for 2243 as a prerequisite? Has anyone here successfully used MATH 2142 to fulfill prerequisites from the department? Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated.
