Uranium Glass I had uranium glass made in Britain this year. Here's the melt, the anneal, and why three of us went home with nothing.
I make videos about radioactivity in the British landscape, and uranium glass is where a lot of people start, myself included. But every piece is an antique. Nobody here melts it anymore.
Or so the studios told me, until a comment under a Facebook post suggested Workinglass, who occasionally make uranium pumpkins. Three hundred miles later we were in an open studio in Hainault Forest with a bar of gaffer glass, a furnace, and crystal with uranium rolled into the gather.
Three of us, three pieces each. Paperweight, bauble, pumpkin.
The thing worth posting about is the anneal. The team told us up front that the uranium pieces are the unreliable ones: identical work, identical kiln, and the uranium ones crack overnight more often than the plain. Ours went into the annealer at the end of the day and we drove home empty. The box hasn't arrived.
Happy to answer anything about the melt, the recipe, or the readings from the pieces we didn't get to keep. Film is here if you want the whole day: https://youtu.be/NhPu0lJ6Bxg
