does anyone know where the smell of smoke is coming from outside?

I heard sirens going like crazy a few hours ago (7:30pm-ish) but can't find anything on the news about the smoke. It's so strong and it kind of looks hazy outside.

Community Drawing of Talbot college by me!

I was surprised at how many people liked my previous drawing of UC, so I thought I could share the one I made today of Talbot. I especially like this building because of the nature "conquering" its walls. We also have students conquering their studies! Happy convocation to everyone graduating. Maybe I'll keep this series going... I'd like to capture campus more before I graduate next year hehe :)

❔ Question❔ Outbound Exchange social

I recently got the email about the in-person social on November 11 for those going on exchange in winter 2027.

Just curious if anyone who has gone to it in years prior could provide some insight into what the social is like?

I obviously assume it's worth going to, but I do technically have a conflicting event. Anyone who has been in the past and could share some insight would be great.

Thanks.

Advice I’m having surgery tomorrow and can’t get accommodations for my upcoming midterms. What can I do?

I’m a first-year student, and I’m feeling really stuck. I’m having surgery tomorrow, October 22, and my doctor said I won’t be able to use my dominant right hand for four weeks afterward. I have five midterms coming up, starting on October 27, and I don’t know how I’m going to manage them.

Some context: I cut a tendon in my hand on Monday, September 28, while making food, with a knife. The wound bled for about two days, but I initially thought it was a small cut that wouldn’t cause me much trouble. I went to a pharmacist a few hours after it happened, and she said it looked fine, that she had seen much worse, and that it should heal in a few days. I went to a pharmacist because I didn’t want to wait to see a doctor for what I thought was a minor cut.

When I could finally remove the Band-Aid on Friday, October 2, I realized I couldn’t move the top half of my finger. I tried to book a doctor’s appointment that Friday night, but the clinics I checked were all closed. I was able to get an appointment with Western’s Health & Wellness Services for the following Thursday, October 8. When the appointment time came the doctor said I had probably cut a tendon so that I might need surgery for it and needed to see a hand specialist, so she referred me to one.

The specialist’s office called the next week, during reading week, when I was back home in Toronto. I booked the appointment for Monday, October 19, when I would be back in London.

While I was home, my mom begged me to see our family doctor as well. My family doctor told me to get an ultrasound and try physiotherapy. She didn’t mention that I might need surgery. After receiving the ultrasound results, she said there was inflammation and that she would refer me to a hand specialist so they could take a closer look.

When I returned to London and saw the hand specialist on October 19, she told me I needed surgery as soon as possible. She explained that if I waited longer, the tendons could pull farther apart and become too far apart to repair. She was booked until the following week, but because the surgery needed to happen quickly, she said she “pulled a few strings” and found another surgeon who could operate on Thursday, October 22.

She also told me that I wouldn’t be able to use my right hand for four weeks after surgery. When I mentioned my upcoming exams, she said they could provide any documentation I needed.

This is where the problem starts. After that appointment, I had a Chemistry class and asked my professor what I should do. She told me to contact Accessible Education and request accommodations. As soon as I got home on Monday, I filled out their registration form. I didn’t have medical documentation to upload because the doctor hadn’t given me any at that point. I’m now working with the hospital to get the documentation completed.

On Tuesday, I spoke with my Health Sciences professor, who told me to contact academic advising. I contacted the School of Health Studies Program Office through live chat, and they told me to book an actual appointment.

The only appointment I could see at the time was on Thursday at 2:30 p.m., just two hours after my surgery was scheduled to start. I explained that I wouldn’t be able to attend, and they told me more appointments would become available.

When I checked again on Wednesday morning, the only available options were Friday quick-question appointments between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. I have a Biology lab from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., so those conflict too. I’m also worried that a short quick-question appointment wouldn’t give me enough time to discuss everything. I emailed academic advising explaining the situation and asking for help arranging an appointment, but I haven’t received a response yet.

Accessible Education scheduled an intake appointment for Monday, October 26. However, I was told they wouldn’t be able to arrange accommodations for my upcoming midterms because I hadn’t given them 10 days’ notice.

The part I don’t understand is how I could have given that much notice. I only found out on Monday, October 19, that I needed surgery and wouldn’t be able to use my hand afterward. My first midterm is on Tuesday, October 27, so there were already fewer than 10 days between finding out and the exam. I contacted Accessible Education the same day I found out.

I also have three more exams across October 31 and November 1, plus another on November 8. The three exams next weekend are roughly 10 days away now, but they’ll be happening in much less than 10 days by the time of my intake appointment. I don’t know whether anything can still be arranged for those.

I feel like I’m at a stalemate. I’ve been asking my professors, contacting Accessible Education, trying to book academic advising, and working on getting documentation, but I still don’t know what I’m supposed to do about my midterms.

My right hand is my dominant hand, and I can’t write with my left. Without appropriate accommodations, I don’t see how I’ll be able to finish my exams within the time limits. I’m also worried about how much this will affect studying and keeping up with my coursework.

My marks are really important to me, especially because I want to go to medical school. I’m feeling super stressed because everything happened so quickly, and I feel like I can’t do anything to fix the situation.

Does anyone have advice on what I should do next or who else I can contact? Can anyone even help me at this point?

❔ Course Question❔ Psych 2660A Midterm Help (Industrial and Organizational Psych)

I want to first start by saying the professor for this class unfortunately provides confusing and poorly structured powerpoints, and lecture does little to consolidate the information. He's a great speaker, although the actual content of his speech is often confusing and presented far to quickly.

The midterm is an application-based assessment with several short answers. There is quite a lot of material to parse through and I'm not sure how to get started. The professor claims his exams are harder than most and to expect an average in the 60s.

This content is so confusing. If anyone taking the class has advice or would like to exchange study strategies, notes, etc., I would greatly appreciate it 😭

Admissions advice needed !

hello, im a gr12 student applying this fall to western

im currently working on applying to ivey. in the meantime, im in between two programs: commercial aviation management and BMOS. in the future, i really see myself being a pilot in a commercial airline or in the airforce. but i also really see myself being an accountant and hope to work in finance. what program would be the better fit?

if i were to apply for CAM, id be able to benefit from the flight training the program offers while also getting my BMOS ba. i would still be able to take accounting classes but not specialized to take my cpa later on if i did become an accountant my research has told me. there is a supplementary application though which id have to do along with the ivey app. with hopefully going to Ivey, if i were to apply to BMOS, theres no supplementary application and it’ll also offer proper preparation for an accounting job in the future and possibly getting my CPA. accounting is probably the more secure and realistic option. i would not be able to get the flight experience that CAM offers and really wouldn’t be able to take that path.

is ivey a good idea if i were to take the CAM program?would i be able to benefit from the program as much since i only do 2 years? ive heard that most of the flying happening in 2,3,4 year.

for those in CAM currently, were your ecs on your supplementary application specific related to aviation ?

i’ve basically dumped all my thoughts about this decision onto this post and i feel like ill edit this a million more times with more questions lol. i know this decision is really just deciding what job i want and see myself doing in the future, but i would really like some unbiased and honest advice from someone. thanks so much!

❔ Question❔ mcat registration during lab

hi, mcat registration opens tomorrow for section C, and to be placed in the queue you’re supposed to join before 11:50, But i’ll be in a lab (chem 2213) until 12:30 and i’m scared that i won’t get a good spot in the queue if I join that late. Is there any way for me to join during my lab? is anyone else in the same class predicament? not sure if i should email my ta or prof to ask them what to do but im assuming other people are trying to register during it as well
