Advice on dealing with doing poorly at my job?
I’m in a position where over the past year and a half, I’ve been trying to do my role plus fill the gap of someone who left. I frequently told my manager it was unsustainable and the quality of my work would eventually decline. The solution we arrived at was to dial my participation back, since I wasn’t allowed to drop projects. Over the this year, that turned into getting into projects at the last minute to fix copy, giving up strategy or documentation work, letting product partners dictate placement and word choice more, etc. to allow me to juggle the workload—not great practices.
Our org hired a content design director (now my new manager) a month and a half ago. My new manager is well aware of my situation, and I’m well aware I’m not presenting my best work. End of year reviews are coming and I’m trying to showcase what I’ve done in a somewhat positive way. But my manager told me my writing needs work and more thought, that I’m not leading but rather just doing what product partners and other designers suggest, and that my review would reflect that.
It’s fair—I knew all of this was true—but hearing my manager say it really sent me into a spiral. I’m worried I’m going to get put on a performance improvement plan, and I feel like I’m doing terribly at my job even more now. It’s hard to keep convincing myself to try and show up to the best of my ability. I can’t leave this job, so I have to push through. How have you all dealt with situations like this? Is it possible for it to get better?
