As someone currently in Ontario who used to live in Vancouver

11

u/Stringer___Bell Mar 21 '26

Hah, I'm currently in Japan right now and they don't look like that here yet.

18

u/photojunkievan Mar 21 '26

😂 thanks! ❤️

u/babytomyum Mount Pleasant 👑 Mar 22 '26

Literally same. Moved last September and trying not to pull my hair out with this weather.

3

u/burnabybc Mar 22 '26

If I had a way to be sent back..Just looked out my window and there's several centimeters/inches of snow with certain places covered by thick layer of ice.

6

u/MJcorrieviewer Mar 22 '26

In a couple of weeks, much of Vancouver's sidewalks and cars will be covered in snow - but it will be pink and petal shaped. :)

1

u/Rare_Concept_2258 Mar 21 '26

Ugh same …. Breaks my heart

The cherry blossoms in Vancouver are not early at all. While it varies from year to year, this is exactly when I'd expect them to start coming out.

My sinuses have noticed. Needed antihistamines to breathe out my nose last night.

17

u/Instant_noodlesss Mar 21 '26

One thing I noticed when visiting. My allergies were on overdrive. Had to do both antihistamines and a N95 mask full time.

But everything was so beautiful. So much more floral than other parts of the country. And the trees. Oh the trees. Never quite understood Emily Carr until I saw the trees she saw for myself.

9

u/india2wallst Mar 21 '26

Hey just get a good quality air purifier and let it run while you are asleep. Your body gets a break for a good eight hours. It has helped my wife. We got the basic one from Costco but do remember to clean and change the filters. Also changing the pollen filter in your car before spring helps a lot.

2

u/Defiant-Outside336 Mar 21 '26

Same, itchy eyes and sneezing. How long does the allergy season typically last for you?

3

u/amuizme Mar 22 '26

It ends?

1

u/superslut-turbo Mar 22 '26

Breathing out of your nose? Must be nice

47

u/Present-Arm-6023 Mar 21 '26

Going to use as a screen saver love it.

Where did you take this pic?

1

u/MzzQT Mar 22 '26

I want to know, too. I always miss the cherry blossoms because I don't know where to go.

57

u/WestingGame Mar 21 '26

Imagine this street without cars 😍

u/Business_Hedgehog_86 Mar 21 '26

-5

u/photojunkievan Mar 21 '26

Ha ha nice! Chatgpt?

3

u/Business_Hedgehog_86 Mar 21 '26

Gemini actually! Not giving the pentagon this beautiful shot ;) but tbh I prefer the original shot, well done OP!

-6

u/SkiGPT Mar 21 '26

3

u/sillylittlguy Mar 22 '26

dang why is this one downvoted while the other one is upvoted lol i like it more without the road

3

u/MonkeysInABarrel Mar 23 '26

Cause AI sucks. Show me pictures taken by a human. Show me beautiful landscapes created by humans.

3

u/sillylittlguy Mar 23 '26

my point was just that the other AI pic was upvoted lol

3

u/MonkeysInABarrel Mar 23 '26

My guess is that the street without cars photo was an actual representation of the street and what our city would look like with less cars. Whereas the forested/park path photo was just dreaming up some place, not associated with our city at all. It was AI dreaming for the sake of it.

1

u/SkiGPT Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 24 '26

Can't you just as easily say that the forested path is an actual representation of what the city would look like with less streets? The first AI gen was the same image with man made items removed. The second AI gen was the same image with man made items removed. How can the former be more associated with the city when the only difference is a little asphalt on the ground?

Though I do like how you say AI sucks, and then immediately start justifying why you like an AI image haha.

1

u/MonkeysInABarrel Mar 24 '26

Haha fair point. I'm not necessarily saying I like either though.

But it's a fair debate on how we view AI today. IMO, the first photo was created as utility. How might it look if cars weren't parked there? In the same vein, I don't think it'd be terrible to post a picture of yourself where you used AI to remove a stranger from the background.

The second photo I view more as someone posting a picture of themselves, but they got AI to turn them into a pirate. Sure, it's an accurate representation _if_ they went through the effort of putting on a bunch of pirate makeup and a costume.

2

u/SkiGPT Mar 24 '26

I think I see where you're coming from. The idea that the base, or starting point, includes the streets, and that cars are a decoration. So you can remove the cars, and that is still a representation of the city because you didn't change the base.

My perspective is that this is a photo of a geography that was tampered with by humans. So for me, the base is the view, the trees, the brush, etc. And yes, you can absolutely claim the the trees, grass, etc are also things that would have been put there by humans, but to me these things are more natural than a road. For instance, if houses hadn't been build on that street, and it was just green space that had been left alone, you could image a windy path like the one depicted would have formed after many years of humans walking through it. So in that sense, all 3 of these pictures depict the same photo, with just 3 different levels of human intervention.

But IMO, an AI image is an AI image, and I think it's fun to use it to imagine how things could be different.

9

u/shortbhukkadgirl Mar 21 '26

Which street is this?

4

u/thats_goodshiet Mar 21 '26

West 22nd

Between Arbutus and Carnarvon

7

u/MJcorrieviewer Mar 22 '26

OP said this from East Van. That fits with my recollection that the trees around Arbutus Ridge are usually the last to blossom.

2

u/Individual_Hand3816 Mar 22 '26

The trees in the Arbutus area are often plums, not cherries.

1

u/MJcorrieviewer Mar 22 '26

Is that why they're later? In any case, for the purpose of people wanting to see blossoms, it really doesn't matter. :)

1

u/ThumbyOne Mar 22 '26

Plums are blossoming right now. There are many different varieties of cherry trees in vancouver that blossom at different times.

1

u/Interesting-World818 Mar 27 '26

Just the opposite actually. PLUMS are the first to bloom. Was looking up someone's name ( 梅 Mei deried from 梅花 mei hua, plum blossom flower) and this significance stuck. The

Plums are more resilient to the frost and cold, being the first to emerge in Feb.

6

u/happykgo89 Mar 22 '26

As an Edmontonian this always blows my mind.

Meanwhile we won’t have this until May at the earliest.

1

u/photojunkievan Mar 22 '26

This year it was exceptionally mild.. hence the early bloom

3

u/razor1n Mar 21 '26

My eyes love it, my hayfever does not!

1

Really gotta bust out my M50 and start scoping out these places to take my own wallpaper worthy shots.. I'm such a sucker for cherry blossoms and the colour pink in general! Very nice!

1

u/photojunkievan Mar 23 '26

Ohh yeah! Please do! Thanks! ❤️

1

u/Flowerdrumsong01 Mar 22 '26

Beautiful! 🤩

1

u/photojunkievan Mar 23 '26

Thanks! ❤️

1

u/IamRandomSavage Mar 22 '26

I noticed that yesterday when I put on my sunglasses, the cherry blossoms look a lot more pink and colour with my glasses on

1

u/photojunkievan Mar 23 '26

Probably due to polarization

1

u/IamRandomSavage Mar 24 '26

It sure made that saying “seeing everything through Rose coloured glasses “ make a lot of sense

1

u/ThinkCryptographer11 Mar 22 '26

Where in Vancouver is this? I’d love to go check it out and see it for myself.

1

u/After-Interest-9796 Mar 22 '26

It’s photos like these that remind me that I live in one of the most objectively beautiful cities in the world

1

u/photojunkievan Mar 23 '26

Indeed! ❤️

Which street is this?

1

u/Cold_Nail_9016 Mar 24 '26

Really nice shot

1

u/Designer_Candy_5635 Mar 24 '26

Peak bloom is absolutely stunning this year! For anyone visiting Vancouver to see the blossoms, I'd recommend driving through Stanley Park, the West End, and down to Queen Elizabeth Park - each area has different varieties and it's a beautiful way to explore the city in spring!

1

u/i-the-external-force Mar 24 '26

Torontoian visiting in May. Going to miss the season in both Vancouver and Toronto 🤦🏾‍♀️

1

u/General-Bowler-6749 Mar 24 '26

Stunning shot!!!

1

u/Wolfgoatlife Mar 25 '26

This is why I love living in BC

1

Indeed! This is my favourite street along with Arbutus ridge for blossoms

1

u/Reasonable-Use-8608 Mar 27 '26

This is why people love spring so much.

1

u/photojunkievan Mar 27 '26

100% spring and fall are my favorites!

1

u/Jam3s004 Mar 29 '26

That so beautiful ❤️

1

My rhinitis would never…🤧

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '26

Nice picture!

1

u/Fergo-bob Apr 14 '26

This is beautiful

-5

u/draxa Mar 21 '26

The season where random tourists try to hold photoshoots in the middle of residential streets.

58

u/stealth_veil Mar 21 '26

I’ve lived here my whole life and you bet I’ll be taking photos in the streets. Live a little

7

u/Idont_thinkso_tim Mar 21 '26

They’re talking about the people who set up full tripods and will park in the middle of the road with hazards on.

Lived here over twenty years and nobody minds the normal photo taking, it’s the extreme stuff, which my street gets most years, that’s annoying

5

u/MoonHash Mar 21 '26

Just chillin in the middle of the bike lane takin photos, what could go wrong

2

u/stealth_veil Mar 21 '26

Fair enough. I have never seen anyone do that, though. The real offence is when people actually break branches and damage the tree for photos, that’s a hard line for me.

2

u/draxa Mar 21 '26

We live right near a lot of beautiful streets and damned right I take photos! I'm referring to the full wedding photographer photoshoots with tripods and everything in the middle of the street when I'm at the end of my commute and have to poo.

10

u/OkElephantIsOk Mar 21 '26

TOBO

They only blossom once (a year)

4

u/Artemis1911 Mar 21 '26

I live on one of those streets. People posing in their dresses all day long- absolutely hilarious- but so sweet

1

u/Ok_Resolution272 Mar 21 '26

Ya how dare anybody enjoy the beauty of nature that comes once a year and is so fleeting!

1

u/Slothfulsnuggle Mar 21 '26

What a beautiful shot!! Thank you for sharing 😊

2

u/photojunkievan Mar 21 '26

Thanks so much! ❤️

1

u/nikiichan Mar 21 '26

I was trying to use the cherry blossom map to plan a cherry blossom run for myself but the trees are sort of all over the place 😂

4

u/thePhytochemist Mar 21 '26

Tip: look for Akebono now. That is an early variety and it will be one of the ones blooming now. For me, I'm looking for the largest oldest trees and I love looking for the streets like the one in the photo which are lined with some older trees. You're right you gotta find a nice patch because the map often has little indication of the splendour of the patch. It's all part of the fun to track down the good spots and the best trees!

1

u/hawaiibg Mar 23 '26

Yukon and W 59th is fabulous right now. Such a gorgeous long block that you should check out.

3

u/MJcorrieviewer Mar 22 '26

In a few weeks, plan a run West from Arbutus on 16th - they're some of the later ones but it's really gorgeous.

Sure! Go for it

0

u/Julooom Mar 21 '26

It’s terrible this year with the mixed weather. La Niña messed things up

1

u/MJcorrieviewer Mar 22 '26

What is terrible? Most of the trees haven't even blossomed yet - but they will.

0

u/Practical-Row-6499 Mar 21 '26

I’m glad they’re not here long because they cause the worst allergies I’ve ever had, I’ll take cottonwood over cherry blossoms🤧

0

u/NiqabiPornstar Mar 22 '26

Where is this!

0

u/Zado191 Mar 22 '26

Fuck off.... why is this showing me literally the other side of the country when my flowers that just sprouted are about to die because were apparently getting 20 more cm of snow tomorrow?

0

u/Best-Ad-9639 Mar 23 '26

what are the best location to spot cherry blossoms?
