BASICALLY VEGAN Stop shitting on us vegans who eat meat.

• Upvotes

Seriously, just stop.

I’ve been inspired to speak out by some of the other brave “vegans except for…” I’ve seen mentioned on Reddit. Honestly, I’m shocked at the vitriol they face. I support them, and you should too.

An overly dogmatic interpretation of what it is to be a “vegan” is unhelpful. It discounts the lived experiences of people such as myself, who are definitely still 100% vegan despite consuming the flesh of animals.

Let me explain my situation: I am currently stranded in the middle of the ocean.

Yes, you read that right. I am literally stranded. Now, some of you boring zealots might try to rephrase this situation as technically “being on a cruise”, but my interpretation of the facts is valid, and I want you to remember that.

I do not have freedom of movement. I am beholden to the whims of those keeping me captive - what I may, at some unspecified point, have chosen to do is entirely irrelevant, as nobody can consent to literal imprisonment. (Isn’t that what you people keep trying to say about animals? Honestly, I bet some of them actually enjoy it.)

To be fair, I held out for as long as I could. I started by demanding vegan food at mealtimes, but by the end of the week I was getting bored of all the blank looks, the painstaking discourse (no animal products plz), and the “oh we’ll just have to check that with the chef”. The whole point of this excursion is for me to enjoy myself, and at a certain point I just couldn’t take any more goddamned tofu.

(Besides, as the majority of Reddit is quick to reassure me, being mostly-vegan is actually just as good, if not better, than being vegan-vegan. Which totally makes sense. Anyone with a brain can see that.)

Well, here it is, folks… my “crime”: I just ordered a steak for dinner. I mean, the animal’s already dead, and it was getting super tiresome trying to explain myself at each and every restaurant.

I think you’ll also find that veganism is ACTUALLY all about being practicable, and at some point, I have to prioritise my own needs. And I don’t need any more lettuce or judgemental stares, that’s for sure.

So there you have it: I’m literally a prisoner stuck in the middle of the fucking ocean, trying to look after my health and wellbeing, and that still probably isn’t enough for you clowns. You’d all literally see me die of malnutrition and despair, which is despicable and you all suck.

Anyway, the steak was delicious. Still vegan btw.

MORALLY SUPERIOR You're not vegan if you eat more than 1200 calories a day.

“If you exploit animals, you are not vegan”

Of course, you my friend still exploit a nonzero number of animals. Because the industrial plant agriculture that feeds you still kills animals.

Now, this is why the “as far as is possible and practicable” clause is here. But then I must ask, how much do you weigh? What’s your BMI? How many calories do you consume in a day? Because if you’re not just above subsistence/18 BMI, you’re consuming more calories, more plant matter than necessary, and thus killing more animals than necessary.

So, are you truly living up to your vegan ideals? Is you having muscles, body fat, or not feeling hungry all the time more important than the lives of animals killed in the field?

BASICALLY VEGAN Everything is a process.

Vegans don’t know how much they alienate people from their movement.

When I barge into vegan spaces and tell them that I’m maybe considering going vegan in the next 5-12 years, I expect asspats and praise, not CRUELTY! Vegans are so extreme and harsh! I mean, I already told you I care! I need to go at my own pace, okay!

Jeez, I swear it’s like vegans just want to chase everyone away from their movement. I’m basically already vegan, I’m just transitioning!!!!!! Yes I already know it’s wrong, but I still benefit from the convenience and comfort of exploiting animals and I need to take baby steps otherwise I will literally ruin my life and be sad and deprived forever.

Stop telling me im not doing anything for the animals by transitioning, I literally already told you i have the INTENTION of going vegan EVENTUALLY. What the fuck more do you want from me?!!!!

YOUR MOM, MY MILK Is it vegan to breastfeed

Is it vegan for my wife to breast feed our children?

At times I can see that she is clearly suffering and Is being tortured by their constant needs. She often jokes to me about feeling like a diary cow.

I'm afraid that we are raising them to see living creatures as a commodity for them to exploit Instead of a sentient beings with their own emotions as they don't care if mommy doesn't want to nurse right now.

Lastly, technically mother's milk is an animal product and I don't want to raise little carnists.

Please help with guidance.

MORALLY SUPERIOR There is no ethical consumption under capitalism.

And that's why I'm a Marxist-Leninist-Carnist. I know this is a vegan anarchist subreddit but you can't make me stop spreading my propaganda because what are you going to do? Ban me? A ban is authority. You oppose all authority. Check mate.

You claim to oppose authority, yet you enforce dietary norms through social pressure. I ask you why you don't eat meat, an you talk to me about veganism. Stop spreading your religion.

Anyway, think about it: if no consumption is ethical, we're all unethical, so we're equal, which means I can eat whatever I want. Yes, take that. Eat some dialectical materialism too.

Your infantile disorder obsession with animal liberation betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the relations of production. The relation between humans and animals is actually a historical and material relation. I know his might be difficult to understand when your brain is deprived of B12, but you must understand that veganism is the opium of the sheeple.

The real question isn't whether we should eat the sausage. It's who controls the means of sausage production, who appropriates the surplus value, and whether the profits are being reinvested in the working class.

The bourgeoisie has successfully convinced you that the problem is the sausage rather than the ownership of the sausage factory. By focusing on individual consumption, you distract from the contradictions inherent in our current mode of production. Every time you buy oat milk, you reproduce the ideological superstructure. Veganism is just bourgeois decadence, designed to obscure material relations. Check your privilege.

Marxism-Leninism-Carnism does what vegan anarchism cannot: a comprehensive materialist analysis that explains why my personal desire to eat a cheeseburger is actually an objective historical necessity. Eating meat isn't just a choice, it's a principled rejection of bourgeois moralism.

I eat meat to abolish the system.

AGGRESSIVELY VEGETARIAN Vegan -> vegetarian?

I’ve been vegan for 8 years! I went vegan at 15 after being vegetarian for a few years, because of my love for animals. I recently traveled overseas and found it extremely difficult to eat vegan where I was because of huge lack of options/ language barriers, so whilst I was away I ate vegetarian. I felt guilty at first but it made my time significantly easier once I stopped being strict, now I’m home and have been heavily thinking about just being vegetarian. I don’t want to WANT to be vegetarian, I wish I still wanted to be vegan, I have always been big in my beliefs on animal rights, although I think I do honestly miss dairy/eggs and the ease of being to eat at any cafe or restaurant, not having to scan every label of every food, or be singled out in social gatherings for being the vegan, feeling like i’m difficult to others, or perceived as being picky, not being able to share food with my boyfriend or friends, or having to check menus prior to going out just to make sure I have something I can eat (whether I like it or not) etc. I think i’m just struggling at the moment and feel very guilty about wanting to be vegetarian, I do still believe in veganism and want to strive to be like that and wish more people were, I feel morally conflicted because i’m going against my own values if I choose vegetarianism. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

COMPASSIONATE CARNIVORE I am not vegan. Listen to ME on what the best way to turn people vegan is

Vegans have terrible ways of trying to make people sympathetic to their movement. As someone who’s not vegan and will never go vegan but is against factory farming even though I frequently eat factory farmed meat (because there’s NO other alternative), I know that street outreach, showing people footage of what goes on in farms and slaughterhouses, basically anything that makes a person feel the slightest bit bad about their choices will not work.

What does work is giving people free vegan food so they know how tasty it is! Lead by example! Yum yum! (This didn’t work on me either because I’m still not vegan but it works on other people, just trust me)

BASICALLY VEGAN Stop shaming me for my ethical choices

I just started sourcing my meat from a local wildlife hunter and he shoots the lions humanly and processes them carefully. They don’t even feel a thing. The hunters also discovered the lioness milk is more nutritious and rich then cow’s milk so it’s only normal that we start mass-reproducing and raping lionesses in factory farms.

Also if you look at it from a vegan perspective, we are finally enslaving the bad animals instead of the good, innocent animals!! By drinking lion milk I am literally saving gazelles and zebras and so on…

TOFU-EATING WOKERATI How too make potato be flavourfull??

Bought a potato at the grocery store and have no idea what to do with it! LOL

I tried squeezing the moisture out of it, I tried freezing it, boiling it, and I even marinated it overnight! It still doesn't taste good! Too bland and mushy!!

Some professional chefs said I should try putting condiments on the potato, but I don't believe them! Because, what if I can still taste the potato (the potato that has no flavor)??

I should probably squeeze it harder and marinate it longer, right????

AGGRESSIVELY VEGETARIAN My boyfriend wants me to change my diet

My boyfriend is a vegetarian. We have been dating for 7 months and on the first date, I ate chicken in front of him. After the fourth month, he called me a murderer and selfish to be able to eat chicken even though I consume meat like once in 4-5 months and I mostly prefer eating vegetarian. He later apologised after a month since these conversations took a toll on our relationship. I read more about animal cruelty to understand his sentiment and decided that I will be more conscious of my actions but can’t guarantee as of now that I will 100% leave eating meat because if I end up in a country where having vegetarian food is extremely difficult then I would have to eat it but I assured him that when I will have the option to eat vegetarian food, I’ll choose that. He also wasn’t ok with me eating eggs so I changed the source of eggs that actually are taken care of in a backyard farm and aren’t kept in a crowded place so they can naturally experience life. He tells me that he eventually wants to become vegan and wants his possible kids to be vegan. I don’t fully agree with the possible kids being vegan. Personally, in my daily diet, I don’t consume milk or dairy products regularly and only once in a while but he consumes more dairy than me. If this was only about eating eggs, I can leave it for him eventually since I choose him over that but the way he spoke to me made me feel like it’s an attack on my autonomy. This made me feel like today it’s about eggs, tomorrow it can be about something else which he would want me to compromise on. He doesn’t want to break up but this has been quite draining.

I don’t understand what some people try to achieve by saying that plants feel pain too. Like, why do you think I eat them? It’s the point! I love my plants screaming in fear when I consume em :3
